  • In this study, the hydrolysis of green macro-algae Enteromorpha intestinalis using solid acid catalyst was conducted to obtain total reducing sugar. The hydrolysis was optimized with four reaction parameters of liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio, catalyst amount, reaction temperature, and reaction time. As a optimized result, the highest TRS of 7.74 g/L was obtained under condition of 7.5 L/S ratio, $140^{\circ}C$, 15% catalyst amount and 2 hr. By the way, at this condition, only 0.13 g/L 5-HMF was detected. The solid acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of marine resources had the potential in the field of bioenergy.

  • The size, morphology and composition of nanoparticles are regarded as the most important factors to the efficiency of catalytic reduction of various chemical compounds. In order to make a systematic comparison, gold, platinum and palladium nanoplates with 100 nm diameter with rough surface morphology were manufactured through the galvanic replacement reaction, and the reaction kinetics of the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitroaniline was systematically analyzed by spectroscopic measurement. According to the observation, the catalytic reduction efficiency was significantly different against the constitutional elements in order of Pd > Au > Pt, and it was additionally influenced by the type of substrate.

  • Three way catalyst has been used extensively for the exhaust gas treatment for the internal combustion gasoline engine. While, numerous research efforts have been directed to develop various technologies for the abatement of exhaust gas from diesel engine. Diesel engine operating under lean condition produces large amount of NOx and the corresponding catalytic technology employing vanadium supported titania using ammonia has been commercialized for heavy duty vehicle. Recently, the Cu catalyst supported on zeolite has been investigated for NOx abatement using ammonia because of its critical importance for ultra low emission vehicle. The current review shows the recent trend in research and development for zeolite based copper catalysts, which are mainly used as catalysts for selective catalytic reduction using ammonia, are one of the aftertreatment technologies for effectively removing nitrogen oxides from diesel exhaust.

  • In this work, the catalytic reduction mechanisms of NO over ACFs/copper prepared by electrolytic copper plating has been studied. It was found that copper content on carbon surfaces increased with increasing the plating time. However, a slightly gradual decrease of adsorption properties, such as, BET specific surface area, was observed in increasing the plating times within the range of well-developed micropore structures. As experimental results, nitric oxide was converted into the nitrogen and oxygen on ACFs and ACFs/copper catalyst surfaces at $500^{\circ}C$. Especially, the surfaces of ACFs/copper catalyst were found to scavenge the oxygen released by catalytic reduction of NO, which could be explained by the presence of another nitric oxide reduction mechanism between ACFs and ACFs/copper catalysts.

  • In this study, we investigated the noble metal catalysts for HCHO removal at room temperature. These catalysts were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, CO-chemisorption. As a result, Pt and Pd based catalysts prepared by the reduction treatment showed the superior HCHO oxidation ability at room temperature. When the catalysts were prepared using $TiO_2$ support, which is well known as the reducing support, showed the superior activity. Also, the activity decreased by the agglomeration of active metal with increasing the reduction time. In case of reduction catalysts, it has been confirmed that the desorption and adsorption ability properties of HCHO is excellent at room temperature.

  • This work investigated the size and shape effect of ${\gamma}$-alumina-supported metal oxides on the hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides. Several metal oxides including Ag, Cu and Ru were used as the catalysts, and n-heptane as the reducing agent. For the Ag/${\gamma}$-alumina catalyst, the $NO_x$ reduction efficiency in the range of $250{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ increased as the size of Ag decreased (20 nm>50 nm>80 nm). The shape effect of metal oxides on the $NO_x$ reduction was examined with spherical- and wire-shape nanoparticles. Under identical condition, higher catalytic activity for $NO_x$ reduction was observed with Ag and Cu wires than with the spheres, while spherical- and wire-shape Ru exhibited similar $NO_x$ reduction efficiency to each other. Among the metal oxides examined, the best catalytic activity for $NO_x$ reduction was obtained with Ag wire, showing almost complete $NO_x$ removal at a temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. For Cu and Ru catalysts, considerable amount of NO was oxidized to $NO_2$, rather than reduced to $N_2$, leading to lower $NO_x$ reduction efficiency.

  • The $SO_2$ catalytic reduction was carried out under the condition of high pressure in this study. Sn-Zr based oxide and CO were used as the catalyst and reducing agent for the reduction of $SO_2$ to element sulfur, respectively. In order to compare the reactivity with the pressure on the catalytic process, the reactivity tests were performed under the conditions of atmospheric pressure and 20 atm. $SO_2$ conversion, the element sulfur yield and COS selectivity were also compared with changing the reaction temperature, $CO/SO_2$ mole ratio and the space velocity(GHSV). $SO_2$ conversion increased with increasing temperature and $CO/SO_2$ mole ratio under the condition of atmospheric pressure and element sulfur yield decreased due to the production of COS by the series reaction of CO and the produced sulfur. However, high $SO_2$ conversion and high element sulfur were obtained under the condition of 20 atm. It was concluded that COS decreased due to the condensation of the produced element sulfur under the condition of high pressure. Therefore, the high sulfur yield for $SO_2$ catalytic reduction could be profitably obtained under the condition of high pressure.

  • In this research, we evaluated the performance and characteristics of carbon supported PtM (M = Ni and Y) alloy catalysts (PtM/Cs) synthesized by a modified polyol method. With the PtM/Cs employed as a catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of cathodes in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), their catalytic and ORR activities and electrical performance were investigated and compared with those of commercial Pt/C. Their particle sizes, particle distributions and electrochemically active surface areas (EAS) were measured by TEM and cyclic voltammetry (CV), while their ORR activity and electrical performance were explored using linear sweeping voltammetries with rotating disk electrodes and rotating ring-disk electrodes as well as PEMFC single cell tests. TEM and CV measurements show that PtM/Cs have the compatible particle size and EAS with Pt/C. When it comes to ORR activity, PtM/C showed the equivalent or better half-wave potential, kinetic current density, transferred electron number per oxygen molecule and $H_2O_2$ production(%) to or than commerical Pt/C. Based on results gained by the three electrode tests, when the PEMFC single cell tests were carried out, the current density measured at 0.6 V and maximum power density of PEMFC single cell adopting PtM/C catalysts were better than those adopting Pt/C catalyst. It is therefore concluded that PtM/C catalysts synthesized by modified polyol can result in the equivalent or better ORR catalytic capability and PEMFC performance to or than commercial Pt/C catalyst.
