  • This paper proposes a mobile navigation system which haptically presents the way to go to visually impaired persons. In order to convey the tactile information to the visually impaired persons, we develop a new tactile module with a solenoid, a permanent magnet and an elastic spring. Furthermore, we suggest 2D vibration flow which originates from one point and gradually propagates to other points on a surface of the haptic navigation system. The tactile module and the vibration flow method are incorporated into the proposed haptic navigation system and they stimulate the user's finger pad and palm, respectively. We conduct experiments to investigate that the proposed navigation system haptically provides the direction to the users. From the experimental results, we verify that the proposed system can generate enough tactile sensation to guide the direction to go in real-time.

  • With rapid development in ultra fast communication and digital multimedia, the realistic broadcasting technology, that can stimulate five human senses beyond the conventional audio-visual service is emerging as a new generation broadcasting technology. In this paper, we introduce a haptic broadcasting system and related core system and component techniques by which we can 'touch and feel' objects in an audio-visual scene. The system is composed of haptic media acquisition and creation, contents authoring, in the haptic broadcasting, the haptic media can be 3-D geometry, dynamic properties, haptic surface properties, movement, tactile information to enable active touch and manipulation and passive movement following and tactile effects. In the proposed system, active haptic exploration and manipulation of a 3-D mesh, active haptic exploration of depth video, passive kinesthetic interaction, and passive tactile interaction can be provided as potential haptic interaction scenarios and a home shopping, a movie with tactile effects, and conducting education scenarios are produced to show the feasibility of the proposed system.

  • The purpose of this research was to determine whether multimodal cues in an online shopping environment could enhance tactile consumer mental imagery, purchase intentions, and attitudes towards an apparel product. One limitation of online retail is that consumers are unable to physically touch the items. However, as tactile information plays an important role in consumer decisions especially for apparel products, this study investigated the effects of multimodal cues on overcoming the lack of tactile stimuli. In experiment 1, to explore the product, the participants were randomly assigned to four conditions; picture only, video without sound, video with corresponding sound, and video with discordant sound; after which tactile mental imagery vividness, ease of imagination, attitude, and purchase intentions were measured. It was found that the video with discordant sound had the lowest average scores of all dependent variables. A within-participants design was used in experiment 2, in which all participants explored the same product in the four conditions in a random order. They were told that they were visiting four different brands on a price comparison web site. After the same variables as in experiment 1, including the need for touch, were measured, the repeated measures ANCOVA results revealed that compared to the other conditions, the video with the corresponding sound significantly enhanced tactile mental imagery vividness, attitude, and purchase intentions. However, the discordant condition had significantly lower attitudes and purchase intentions. The dual mediation analysis also revealed that the multimodal cue conditions significantly predicted attitudes and purchase intentions by sequentially mediating the imagery vividness and ease of imagination. In sum, vivid tactile mental imagery triggered using audio-visual stimuli could have a positive effect on consumer decision making by making it easier to imagine a situation where consumers could touch and use the product.

  • Tactile acuity was assessed in groups of control, blind, deaf, and blind caused by complication to investigate the effective tactile stimuli on tactile sensory substitution studies when tactile display is applied to persons with sensory loss of vision or hearing. Two-point discrimination and grating resolution were assessed by compass and JVP dome, respectively, in the hand, arm, neck, lumbar, and knee. In two-point discrimination by compass, control group showed the highest sensitivity in fingers among assessed body areas but did not show any significant difference between male and female. Blind group and deaf group compared to control group did not show any significant difference in fingers but showed lower sensitivity in arm and knee. In grating resolution by JVP dome, control group did not show any significant difference among five fingers as well as between male and female. Blind group showed higher sensitivity in five fingers compared to control group, but deaf group did not show any significant difference from control group. Blind caused by complication group showed lower sensitivity in two-point discrimination and grating resolution compared to control group and blind group. These results suggest that the body area and method of tactile stimulation, and difference in tactile acuity depending on underlying disease of sensory loss should be considered when tactile display is applied for sensory substitution.

  • This paper presents a vibrotactile space mouse which use pin-type vibrotactile display modules and a gyroscope chip. This mouse is a new interface device which is not only an input device as an ordinary space mouse but also a tactile output device. It consists of a space mouse which use gyroscope chip and vibrotactile display modules which have been developed in our own laboratory. Lately, by development of vibrotactile display modules which have small size and consume low power, vibrotactile displays are available in small sized embedded systems such as wireless mouses or mobile devices. Also, development of new sensors like miniature size gyroscope by MEMS technology enables manufacturing of a small space mouse which can be used in the air not in a plane. The vibrotactile space mouse proposed in this paper recognizes motion of a hand using the gyroscope chip and transmits the data to PC through Bluetooth. PC application receives the data and moves pointer. Also, 2 by 3 arrays of pin-type vibrotactile actuators are mounted on the front side of the mouse where fingers of a user's hand contact, and those actuators could be used to represent various information such as gray-scale of an image or Braille patterns for visually impared persons.
