  • Effects of the cross-sectional dimension and moisture profile of wood specimens on the ultrasonic sound velocities of radiata pine heartwood and sapwood. Each moisture profile model specimen was made by composing five wood pieces with various moisture contents. As the cross-sectional dimensions decreased the ultrasonic velocities of both heartwood and sapwood decreased by 4~8%. In the ultrasonic signals transmitted through the specimens low frequency components more dominated than high frequency components as the dimension of cross section increased. The specimens with the same average MCs and different moisture profiles showed different ultrasonic velocities. By plotting the ultrasonic velocities against the average moisture contents of the inner three pieces of the moisture profile model specimens it was revealed that three distinct plot patterns existed.

  • This study implicates a quality evaluation technique for lining concrete using the ultra-sonic technique and proposed a classification for quality evaluation. From the comparison of test results, an improved result comparable to the results by destructive test can be obtained by using averaged transmission velocity of velocities obtained at pure space and central space between two sensors of ultrasonic tester. It is also shown that strength evaluation by ultra-sonic method is not reliable and an evaluation according to the transmission velocities can be improved method for the strength evaluation of concrete.

  • Non-destructive ultrasonic testing was applied to evaluate the performance of wood deck material with hole as artificial defect. Ultrasonic velocities and modulus of elasticity were measured according to different diameters and numbers of holes, and comparative analysis to each data were done. From the results, ultrasonic velocities and modulus of elasticity decreased with an increase in the hole size and showed a negative linear correlation with the size of hole, respectively. As the hole size increased, ultrasonic velocities decreased, but their difference was small in the case of the hole size under 15 mm. Also, ultrasonic velocities and modulus of elasticity decreased with increasing the number of holes and showed a strong negative linear correlation to the number of holes. As the number of holes increased, ultrasonic velocities decreased to 3.5%, but modulus of elasticity decreased to 27%. Therefore, the number of holes showed greater influence to modulus of elasticity than ultrasonic velocity. Overall, the size and number of holes influenced to ultrasonic velocity and modulus of elasticity, and their influence will be greater as the size and number of holes increases. These results suggested that several ultrasonic parameters rather than a single ultrasonic velocity should be applied to detect small defects in wood decking materials.

  • Nondestructive testing(NDT) by using ultrasonic sound is widely applied to wood for grading, moisture and defect detecting, estimating degree of decay, etc. Before practicing such application, basic relationships between ultrasonic transmission and wood properties shall be studied first. In this study, ultrasonic NDT was applied to larch and red pine to investigate the effects of moisture content and slope of grain on ultrasonic transmission speed. Specimens for testing about moisture content were prepared to have moisture content of green state, 30%, 20%, 10% and oven-dry state. Specimens for testing about slope of grain were prepared to have grain angle of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degree in the tangential direction. Ultrasonic transmission speed was inversely proportional to moisture content in low range of moisture content under around 30% that was considered to be close to fiber saturation point. In high moisture content range above 30%, the ultrasonic transmission speed was almost constant. The same trend was observed in the relationships between compressive strength and moisture content. Slope of grain also had inversely proportional relationship with ultrasonic transmission speed and compressive strength. The relationship between compressive strength and ultrasonic transmission speed could be expressed by a linear equation.

  • In this study, accelerated weathering test was performed with wood, a major material for wooden cultural building. In order to evaluate the deterioration of wood, ultrasonic transmission times were measured to evaluate dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE), which was verified by determining static MOE using three-point bending test. Ultrasonic transmission time was decreased with an increase in the weathering time levels (0, 500, 1000 hours) while it increased in 1500 and 2000 hours. Distribution of dynamic and static MOE was similar to that of the ultrasonic transmission time measurements. The results mean that the measurement of ultrasonic transmission time was very effective to evaluate MOE of wooden cultural buildings for their preservation and management. This method could be utilized to assess wooden cultural buildings as a way of preserving them in a scientific manner.

  • This study was focused on measurement methods for stone cultural heritages by analyzing Ultrasonic (P-wave) velocity variations according to the water content and anisotropy of rocks. As a result of analyzing of rock properties, the water content and saturation degree were rapidly changed at the beginning of drying and then showed exponential curve which their rates of change gradually decreased. However, P-wave velocity and its rate of change maintained constant values after natural drying of 10 hours. Therefore, the ultrasonic measurement for stone cultural heritages should be performed after natural drying of 10 hours considering the weather and moisture conditions. In addition, the highest values of anisotropy coefficient exhibited in granite and limestone, and indirect method was insensitive to anisotropy compared to direct method. However, all rocks remained anisotropy by indirect method. Accordingly, ultrasonic measurement considering various directions is required. The research results will contribute to customized non-destructive testing and precise diagnosis for lithological characteristics of stone cultural heritage.

  • Small Sitka spruce specimens of 50×133×10 mm3 were artificially weathered in a chamber equipped with 340 mm xenon arc and water spray as part of the accelerated-weathering cycle. Specimens were exposed to only ultraviolet or ultraviolet with water spray for 10 and 20 hours. Physical properties of the weathered specimens were investigated by colorimetry, sorption and ultrasonic testing methods. The longer exposed to ultraviolet the less bright were the specimens. It was revealed that the water spray treatment accelerated the loss of brightness and increased the wettability. Among the specimens exposed to ultraviolet with water spray the specimens treated for 10 hours showed greater wettability than those for 20 hours, which might lose the wettability due to the excessive degradation on their surfaces. The ultrasonic velocities of the weathered specimens were obviously higher than those of the unweathered. It is considered that the accelerated weathering either increases the modulus of elasticity of wood or decrease the density of wood.

  • The main objective of this research to develop an IoT based wireless contactless ultrasonic system (ICUS) and its application to concrete structure. The developed system consists of 16 mems, 2Mhz digitizer, amplifying circuit, FPGA, and wifi module, enabling to measure leaky surface waves from concrete specimens without physical coupling process and wires. Multi-channel analysis is performed to improve the accuracy of data analysis, and the velocity of leaky surface waves and acoustics are derived. Field inspection of railroad concrete sleepers is conducted to evaluate the performance of the system and to compare the results with conventional ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). As a result of the field inspection, UPV was limited to evaluate damages. This is because crack pattern of railroad sleepers is parallel to ultrasonic ray path and accessibility of the railroad at the field is disadvantageous to contact-based UPV. On the other hand, ICUS possibly detect the damages as reduction of dynamic modulus by up to 59% compared to non-damaged specimen.

  • In this study, a piezoelectric smart sensor that can be embedded inside of concrete structures is developed to investigate the early stage of concrete curing. A waterproof coating is used to protect the piezoelectric sensor from moistures of concrete mixture. Also, a mortar case is utilized to encapsulate the sensor to protect it from impact loads. To estimate the strength of concrete, a self-sense guided-wave actuated sensing technique is applied. In the guided wave, its velocity is varied according to the mechanical properties of concrete such as modulus of elasticity. Because modulus of elasticity directly affects the strength of concrete, the guidedwave's velocity also affects the concrete strength development. To verify the feasibility of using the proposed approach, the smart sensor was embedded into a 100MPa concrete cylinder and the self-sense guided wave is continuously measured throughout the curing process. The measurements showed that the propagation time (TOF) of the measured guided waves gradually decreased as the curing age increased. Especially, at the early age of the curing process, the variation of the TOF was very significant. Furthermore, the results showed that there is a linear relationship between the TOF of the self-sense guided waves and the strength of concrete existed. It is safe to conclude that the proposed approach can be used very effectively in monitoring of the strength development of high strength concrete structures.
