Effect of Diluent Size on Aluminum Nitride Prepared by Using Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis Process (희석제 입도가 고온자전연소법에 의한 질화알루미늄 합성에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the morphological effect on synthesis of aluminum nitride by SHS Process, two type of Al Powder (granular and flacky shape) with the mean size of 34 $\mu$m and the diluent AIN powders of four different mean sizes.0.12, 9.7, 39.3, 50.5 $\mu$m, were used to prepare green compact. The packing density was fixed to $35 TD\%. The initial pressure of $N_{2}$ and diluent fraction was varied in the range of $1\~10 MPa,\;0.4\~0.7$, respectively. AlN with high purity of $98\% or over and large particle size of about several tens fm can be synthesized by SHS reaction as a consequence of adjusting particle size of AlN dilutent similarly to that of Al reactant. This may be caused by improvement of $N_{2}$ gas permeation to compact after passing the propagation wave. In the case of flaky-shape aluminum used as reactant, instead of granular Al-powder, unstable combustion would be occurred. As the result, irregular propagation of combustion wave and falling-off of maximum temperature would be observed during the reaction.

  • As a large scale port development in coastal waters proceeds step by step and populations in the vicinity of port are getting increased, the issue on 'how to dispose the treated municipal water and wastewater in harbor' brings peoples' concern. The submarine outfall system discharges the primary or secondary treated effluent at the coastline or in deep water, or between these two. The effluent, which has a density similar to that of fresh water, rises to the sea surface forming plume or jet, together with entraining the surrounding sea water and becomes very dilute. We intended in this paper to investigate the impact on dilution of effluent and the behavior of flume under the conditions of the seasonal and spatial temperature variations, which have not been noticeable in designing effective marine outfall system. To predict and analyze the behaviour and dilution characteristics of plume not just with the effluent temperature, but also with the seasonal variation of temperature of surround water, CORMIX( Cornell Mixing Zone Expert System)-GI have been applied. The results should be used with caution in evaluation the mixing zone characteristics of discharged water. We hope to help for the effective operation of outfall system, probable outfall design, protection of water quality, and warm water discharges from a power plant, etc.

Selection of Essential Oils Inhibiting Germination and Initial Growth of Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) (유채(Brassica napus L.) 종자의 발아와 초기생장을 억제하는 식물정유의 선발)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the phytotoxic effects of 19 essential oils on seed germination and initial growth of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). We found that anise, cinnamon, citronella, clove, geranium, lemongrass, mustard and pine oils completely inhibited germination of rapeseed at $100{\times}$ dilute solution. Based on the inhibition rates of rapeseed emergence and initial growth, three essential oils (cinnamon, clove, and geranium) were selected as potential bio-herbicides. Under pre-emergence applications of cinnamon, clove, and geranium oils at 90 kg ai $ha^{-1}$, rates of rapeseed emergence were 7.1, 25.0, and 3.6% and its initial growth were 22.0, 9.9 and 11.0%, respectively.

Au-Ag-Te Mineralization by Boiling and Dilution of Meteoric Ground-water in the Tongyeong Epithermal sold System, Korea: Implications from Reaction Path Modeling (광화유체의 비등과 희석에 의한 통영 천열수계 Au-Ag-Te 장화작용에 대한 반응경로 모델링)

  • At the Tongyeong mine, quartz, rhodochrosite (kutnahorite), muscovite, illite, pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite. sphalerite, acanthite, and hessite are the principal vein minerals. They were deposited under epithermal conditions in two stages. Ore mineral assemblages and associated gangue phases in stage can be clearly divided into two general associations: an early cycle (band) that appeared with introduction of most of the sulfides and electrum, and a later cycle in which base metal and carbonate-bearing assemblages (mostly rhodochrosite) became dominant. Tellurides and some electrum occur as small rounded grains within subhedral-to euhedral pyrite or anhedral galena in stageII. Sulfide mineralization is zoned from pyrite to galena and sphalerite. We have used computer modeling to simulate formation of four stages of vein genesis. The reaction of a single fluid with andesite host rock at 28$0^{\circ}C$, isobaric cooling of a single fluid from 26$0^{\circ}C$ to 12$0^{\circ}C$, and boiling and mixing of a fluid with both decreasing pressure and temperature were studied using the CHILLER program. Calculations show that the precipitation of alteration minerals is due to fluid-andesite interaction as temperature drops. Speciation calculations confirm that the hydrothermal fluids with moderately high salinities and pH 5.7 (acid), were capable of transporting significant quantities of base metals. The abundance of gold in fluid depends critically on the ratio of total base metals and iron to sulfide in the aqueous phase because gold is transported as an Au(HS)$_2$- complex, which is sensitive to sulfide activity. Modeling results for Tongyeong mineralization show strong influence of shallow hydrogenic processes such as boiling and fluid mixing. The variable handing in stageII mineralization is best explained by maltiple boilings of hydrothermal fluid followed by lateral mixing of the fluid with overlying diluted, steam-heated ground water. The degree of similarity of calculated mineral assemblages and observed electrum composition and field relationships shows the utility of the numerical simulation method in identifying chemical processes that accompany boiling and mixing in Te-bearing Au-Ag system. This has been applied in models to narrow the search area for epithermal ores.

Optimization of Soymilk Fermentation by the Protease-producing Lactobacillus paracasei (Protease를 생산하는 Lactobacillus paracasei의 분리와 이를 이용한 두유 발효 최적화)

  • Our aim was to ferment soymilk using lactic acid bacteria that showed protease activity and to optimize the condition for fermentation. In total, 108 strains of protease-producing lactic acid bacteria were isolated from various fermented foods such as kimchi and jeotgal, and among them, 29 strains displaying the highest protease activity were selected for further study. From these 29 strains, strain MK1, whose protease activity was 126 $mU/mL{\cdot}min$, was selected as the optimal fermentation strain owing to its high ability to digest soymilk protein. It was henceforth labeled as Lactobacillus paracasei MK1. The optimum conditions for the fermentation of soymilk by using L. paracasei MK1 were determined to be as follows: 30 h of fermentation time at a temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, and at a pH of 6.0 in the initial growth medium.

Plume Rise and Initial Dilution Determination Reflecting the Density Profile over Entire Water Column (해수 전체 컬럼에서 밀도 분포를 반영한 플룸 상승과 초기 희석도 결정)

  • A number of ocean outfalls are located around coastal area over the United States and discharge primary treated effluent into deep water for efficient wastewater treatment. Two of them, the Sand Island and Honouliuli municipal wastewater outfalls, are located on the south coast of Oahu. There have been growing interests about the plume dynamics around the ocean outfalls since plume discharged from the multiport diffuser may have significant impacts on coastal communities and immediate consequence on public health. Among the studies of plume dynamics performed in the vicinity of both outfalls, Project MB-4 in the Mamala Bay Study recently made with the funding in the $ 9 million amount statistically dealt with the near-field behavior of the plumes at the Sand Island and Honouliuli outfalls. However, Project MB-4 predicted much higher surfacing frequency than the realistic value obtained by model studies by Oceanit Laboratories, Inc.. It is suggested that improvements should be made in the application of the plume model to more simulate the actual discharge characteristics and ocean conditions. In this study, it has been recommended that input parameters in plume models reflect realistic density profile over the entire water column since. in the previous Mamala Bay Study, the density profiles were measured at 5m depth increments extending from 13 to 63 m depth (the density profile on the upper portion of water column was not included, Roberts 1995). It is proved that the density stratification is the important parameter for the submergence of the plume. In this study, as one of the important parameters, plume rise and initial dilution reflecting the density profile over the entire water column have been taken into account for more reliable plume behavior description.

Optimum Dumping Rate of Biodegradable Liquid Waste in Ocean Disposal (분해성 액상폐기물의 해양처리시 최적 투기율)

  • Among the biodegradable liquid waste treatment and disposal methods, ocean dumping is a cost-effective and productive manner considering reuse point of view However, when biodegradable liquid waste is dumped in the ocean, oxygen consumption by the decomposition of organic matter must be considered. The purpose of this study is to determine the maximum allowable concentration and dumping rate in the southern waters of the East Sea based on dissolved oxygen level. Streeter and Phelps' model has been used to determine the maximum allowable concentration. Factors in this model, deoxygenation constants and reaeration coefficients, have been determined by appling oxygen consumption method and closed system model. Deoxygenation constants and reaeration coefficients from surface to each standard depth are $0.24\~0.29/day\;and\;0.03\~0.39/day$ in summer, $0.17\~0.20/day\;and\;0.04\~0.56/day$ in winter, respectively. The allowable organic matter concentration($mgBOD/\iota$) to the dissolved oxy-gen sag value of $5mg/{\iota}$ is represented $17.23\times(H)^{-0.37}$ in summer, and $64.96\times(H)^{-0.52}$ in winter by mixing depth(H, m). Csanady's experiment has been applied to estimate the optimum dumping rate. The optimum dumping rate($R,\;m^3/sec$) can be written as a product of the beam(b, m) and the draft(h, m) of vessel, and biochemical oxygen demand of waste($L_n,\;mg/{\iota}$) $R=275{\times}bh^{0.63}L_n^{-1}$ in summer $=745{\times}bh^{0.48}L_n^{-1}$ in winter. The difference of dumping rate between in summer and winter is due to the oxygen distribution.

Removal of E.Coli and Strawberry growth monitoring by generated Ultra Fine bubble in water (수중 초미세기포에 의한 대장균 제거 및 딸기 성장 모니터링)

  • 친환경적인 산업기술인 초미세기포(Ultra Fine Bubble, 이하 UFB) 제조 기술은 농업, 수처리, 그리고 환경재생 등 다양한 분야에서 적용되고 있다. UFB는 1,000nm 이하의 크기를 가진 기포로서 용존산소를 통한 농작물 성장 촉진 및 수중의 대장균 및 세균제거 등 다양한 성질을 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 기존의 방식과는 다르게 자왜현상을 메카니즘으로 갖는 타격식으로 제조된 UFB 생성장치를 통해 생성된 200nm이하의 크기를 가진 UFB를 실제 딸기 농장에 적용하여 딸기의 성장을 모니터링하고 살균 성능을 가진 화학제품과 UFB를 대장균에 적용하여 대장균 제거효율을 비교하였다. 딸기농장에 기존에 사용되던 지하수 대신 UFB를 주입하여 딸기성장 초기단계의 DO농도를 측정하고 딸기 생식단계에 산소포화도에 대한 질산염의 농도를 측정하여 상관관계를 분석하였으며 각각의 딸기 열매를 수확하여 무게를 비교하였다. 또한 대장균이 함유되어있는 대변을 채취하여 살균 성능을 가진 화학제품과 UFB수를 각각 대장균이 포함된 실험원수와 반응시켜 배양하고 검출된 대장균 개체 수에 확인하여 제거효율을 비교분석 하였다. 딸기성장 초기단계의 DO농도 측정결과 DO농도가 6~9ml/L로 높게 유지되고 있음을 확인하였고 딸기 생식단계에서 산소포화도가 일정하게 유지되고 있음에 따라 질산염의 농도가 점차 감소하는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 수확한 열매의 무게는 각각 37g, 19g으로 UFB수를 통해 재배된 딸기가 약 2배 이상 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과는 수중의 용존산소가 딸기 성장 초기에 뿌리의 발육에 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 질산염을 원활하게 섭취하게 하여 딸기의 성장이 촉진되었고 열매의 무게가 증가하였다고 판단된다. 또한 대장균이 함유된 원수, 원수+화학제품, 원수+UFB를 접종하여 대장균과 반응시켜 배양하여 대장균 개체 수를 확인한 결과, 원수의 경우 약 600개의 대장균의 개체수가 나타났고, 원수+화학제품의 경우 검출된 대장균의 개체 수는 약 300개 정도로 나타났다. 이를 희석한 비율을 계산하여 대장균 개체 수를 나타내면 원수 약 6000개/ml, 원수+화학제품 약 6000개/ml로 비슷하게 나타난다. 반면, 원수+UFB 경우 검출된 대장균의 개체 수는 1개로 희석한 비율을 계산하여 대장균 개체 수를 나타내면 약 20개/ml로 나타난다. 이와 같은 결과를 통해 UFB는 99.9%의 대장균 제거효율을 보였으며, 화학제품은 대장균 제거효율을 보이지 않았다. 따라서 화학제품은 항균기능은 작용하지만 살균기능은 거의 없다고 판단하였고, UFB의 경우 기포가 소멸하면서 발생되는 초고온, 초고압을 형성하여 주변에 존재하는 대장균을 제거하였거나, 기포가 소멸할 때 발생되는 OH 라디칼을 통해 대장균의 세포를 화학적으로 분해시켜 대장균을 제거하였다고 보인다.

Current and Long Wave Influenced Plume Rise and Initial Dilution Determination for Ocean Outfall (해양 배출구에서 해류와 장파에 의한 플룸 상승과 초기 희석도 결정)

  • In the United States, a number of ocean outfalls discharge primary treated effluent into deep sea water and contribute for more efficient wastewater treatment. The long multiport diffuser connected by long pipe from a treatment plant discharge wastewater into deep water due to the steep slope of the sea bed. However, Plume discharged from the diffuser can have significant impacts on coastal communities and possibly immediate consequence on public health. Therefore, there have been growing interests about the dynamics of plume in the vicinity of the ocean outfalls. It is expected that the ocean outfall should be considered for more efficient and reliable wastewater treatments as soon as possible around coastal area in South Korea. A number of studies of plume ynamics have used various models to predict plume behavior. However, in many cases, the calculated values of plume behavior are in significantly poor agreement with realistic values. Therefore, in this study, it is recommended that improvements should be made in the application of the plume model to more simulate the actual discharge characteristics and ocean conditions. It should be noted that input parameters in plume models reflect realistic ocean conditions like waves as well as currents. In this study, as one of the new parameters, current and long wave-influenced plume rise and initial dilution have been taken into account by using simple linear wave theory under some specific assumptions for more reliable plume behavior description. Among the improved plume models approved by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the RSB(Roberts-Snyder-Baurngartner) and UM(Updated Merge) models were chosen for the calculation of plume behavior, and the variation calculated by both models on the basis of long period wave was compared in terms of plume rise and initial dilution.

Strength Characteristics of Concrete Subjected In Horizontal Continuous Vibration During Initial Curing (초기양생중에 수평연속진동을 받은 콘크리트의 강도특성)

  • In this study, strength characteristics of concrete specimens subjected to horizontal continuous vibration during initial curing were investigated. As experimental variables, vibration velocity(0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 kine) and vibration time(3, 6, 12, 24 hrs) were used. Density and segregation of the specimens were also investigated. Vibrating was started soon after placing, and strengths investigated consist of compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and bond strength. Strengths decrease were hardly occurred at 0.25 kine vibration velocity regardless of vibration times and all strengths were increased for 3 hrs vibration at 0.5 kine vibration velocity. Density was increased for all specimens due to the vibration and there was no serious segregation under even 4 kine vibration velocity.
