  • Studies were carried out to investigate phenotypic expression, mortality and biochemical analysis of haemolymph proteins of nm-d, nm-f, nm-k and nmn bib-molting mutants of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. The non-molting mutants characters were expressed in the homozygote of each mutant genes. All strains of non-molting mutants were similar with each other in physiological characteristics, but the expression varied with each strains. The larvae of nm-d, nm-i and nmn died between day 5 and day 9 after hatching without the first molt. The nm-f and nm-k mutants died between day 5 and day 16 with a slight increase of body weight and, more than 90% of the mutants larvae died before the first molt and a few of them survived to the 2nd and the 3rd instar and died. The haemolymph protein components of nm-d, nm-i, and nmn were rapidly reduced, and on the other hand those of nm-f and nm-k consistently until they died. And there were no distinguishable difference in haemolymph components of non-molting mutants, as compared to those normals.

  • Dry weight and body fluid osmolarity of embryo, and maternal ovarian fluid and the ovarian inner tissue of the viviparous teleost, Ditrema temmincki, changed considerably during the gestation period. After the complete absorption of the egg yolk, average dry weight of the embryo increased to 373.76 mg, and the range of total length (TL) was from 6.0 to 60.0 mm. Osmolarity of the embryonic body fluid was 796,8 mOsmol/kg with TL 64.0 mm right before parturition. Ovarian outer membrane started to swelling clearly after fertilization, and maximized in March. The swelling of ovigerous folds was maximized in late April. Expansion of blood vessels and increase of hemocytes reached to their maximum right before parturition. The results of this study indicated that these changes are related to the nutritional and environmental adaptation of both the embryo and the maternal body during the gestation period.

  • Experimental cohorts of Mugil cephalus were divided into 5 groups : seawater~normal feed (SWN), acclimation to freshwater~normal feed (GFWN), acclimation to freshwater~salt feed (Gf\iVS), freshwater. normal feed (FWN) and freshwater-salt feed (f\iVS). Growth was faster in the SWN, Gf\iVS, and GFWN groups than in the f\iVS and FWN groups. Condition factor did not differ among the groups. Survival (92 %) of the juveniles was the highest in the Gf\iVS group; however, the others showed no significant difference. Moisture of FWN group was significantly higher than that of SWN group (P < 0.05). Potassium concentration was significantly higher in the SWN group than that of others (P < 0.05). It was highest (30 mmolfl) among the cohort of SWN.

  • The aim of this study is to fabricate composite bone plates consisted of unidirectional biodegradable glass fibers (BGF) and polylactic acid (PLA) and evaluate the performance of the composite bone plates according to the temperature ($50.0^{\circ}C$) of PBS (Phosphate Buffer Saline) solution and exposure time (0~3 weeks). Mechanical characteristics, such as bending stiffness, flexural strength, water uptake and mass loss, were investigated and the results showed that mechanical properties of the plates decreased as soaking duration increased due to loss of composite material.

  • Cytologic findings of pleural effusion in three cases of rhabdomyosarcoma are reported. Case 1 was a pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma which had devoped at the chest wall of an elderly male patient and caused pleural effusion. The cytologic features were consistent with pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma, that was, showing loose clusters, cellular pleomorphism, and abundant finely vesicular cytoplasm. Cases 2 and 3 were embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas in young adults. Primary site was the oral cavity in case 1, but unknown in case 2 and case 3. The effusion cytology was similar in these cases. Clustered or isolated small round cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and scanty cytoplasm were smeared. The cohesiveness of tumor cells was weak and the cells did not show linear arrangement or nuclear melding. Effusion cytology in a sarcoma patient would be diagnostic when the primary site and the type of sarcoma were already known.
