  • In this study, kinetics data was obtained for steam reforming reaction of ethane over the nickel catalyst. The variables of steam reforming reaction were reaction temperature, partial pressure of ethane, and mole ratio of steam and ethane. Parameters for the power rate law kinetic model and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model were obtained from the kinetic data. Also, sizing of steam reforming reactor was performed by using PRO/II simulator. For the steam reforming reaction of ethane, Langmuir-Hinshelwood model determining the reaction rate by the surface reaction was better suited than a simple power rate law kinetic model. On water-gas-shift reaction, power rate law kinetic model was well fitted to the kinetic data. Reactor size can be calculated for production of hydrogen through PRO/II simulation.

  • The hydrogenolysis of cellulose into polyols was examined over Pt/$Cs_xH_{3-x}PW_{12}O_{40}$ catalysts containing different Cs fractions. The surface area and Pt dispersion of Pt/$Cs_xH_{3-x}PW_{12}O_{40}$ catalysts were found to increase with Cs content. Similar polyol yields were obtained over Pt/$Cs_xH_{3-x}PW_{12}O_{40}$ catalysts irrespective of their Cs content. The catalytic activity of Pt/$Cs_xH_{3-x}PW_{12}O_{40}$ was comparable to that of Ni/W/SBA-15 and combined catalytic systems such as Pt/AC+$H_3PW_{12}O_{40}$ and Pt/AC + $Cs_{3.0}PW_{12}O_{40}$. Some polyanion species were found to leach from the Pt/$Cs_xH_{3-x}PW_{12}O_{40}$ catalyst during the course of the reaction.

  • To increase flash point which is related to flammability, seven unprecedented new cleaning agents containing fluoride atoms have been invented. These newly synthesized cleaning agents's physical properties which were conducted by Korea Institute of Petroleum Management by using a standard method showed excellent values. Particularly, flash point of newly synthetic cleaning agents is more higher than that of fluoride free compound. A specimen for cleaning ability was prepared by cutting in $60mm{\times}40mm$ size of stainless steel plate. The surface of the above specimens was applied with four kinds of contaminants, such as paraffin based drawing oil, flux abietic acid, water-insoluble cutting oil, and lubricating oil. Contaminated specimens were immersed in new compounds (1-7) for 1 to 5 minutes to dissolve oil in the cleaning agent. Although the data indicate that all compounds (1-7) exhibit lower cleaning ability toward cutting oil, it is observed that in the case of the present study more than 80% of pollutants on the surface were almost removed within 5 minutes.

  • In this study, we investigated the activity of Pd and Cu co-incorporated on mesoporous silica support such as MCM-41 and SBA-15 for catalytic nitrate reduction in water. In pure hydrogen flow, nitrate concentration was gradually decreased with the reaction time, but nitrogen selectivity was too low due to very high pH of reaction medium after the reaction. In order to acquire high nitrogen selectivity, we utilized carbon dioxide as a pH buffer, which resulted in higher nitrogen selectivity (about 40%). For the above reaction conditions, Pd-Cu/MCM-41 showed better performance than Pd-Cu/SBA-15. The physicochemical properties of both catalysts were investigated to figure out the relationship between the characteristics of the catalysts and the catalytic activity on the catalytic nitrate reduction by $N_2$ adsoprtion-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), $H_2$-temperature programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques.

  • Hematite reduction using hydrogen was conducted and the various process parameters were closely observed. A lab scale fluidized bed unit was designed especially for this study. The optimal values of the gas velocity, reduction time and temperature were evaluated. The values which indicated the highest reduction rate were set as fixed parameters for the following tests starting with the reduction time of 30 minutes and 750 ℃ of temperature. Among these variables the one with the highest interest was the gas specific consumption. It will tell the amount of the gas which is required to achieve a reduction rate of over 90% at the optimal conditions. This parameter is important for the scale up of the lab scale unit. 1,500 Nm3/ton-ore was found to be the optimal specific gas consumption rate at which the reduction rates exhibit the highest values for hematite.

  • Petcokes is the final product obtained from a refinery process. This petcokes includes high percentage of inorganic and sulfur compounds. Currently, the petcokes produced from domestic refinery plants include more than 6% of sulfur. To use petcokes as valuable raw materials, the weight percentage of sulfur must be lower than 2% of sulfur. Solvent extraction, thermal desulfurization, and hydro-desulfurization have been used to remove the sulfur. In this study, we attempted new approach to remove the sulfur introducing microwave energy. Microwave increase the reaction rates by providing the fast heating and disconnecting the bonding structure of the molecules. The experiments of microwave thermal desulfurization and microwave plus hydrogen gas were carried out to remove the sulfur. We obtained 68.3% of sulfur removal rate with the 2 hours of reaction time and 1835 W of microwave powder. In the experiment of microwave with hydrogen gas, we obtained 86.4% of sulfur removal rate with the 1.5 hours of reaction time and 1835 W of microwave power. If we increase reaction time or decrease the particle size of petcokes, we expect more than 90% of sulfur removal.

  • Waste tires have both sides which are contamination and reuse concern with environmental problems. In this study, tire pyrolysis was conducted to convert combustible gases using thermal plasma. Production of combustible gases was found by gas chromatography after thermal plasma pyrolysis of waste tires without oxygen. The combustible gases consist of low molecular hydrocarbons such as $CH_4$, $C_2H_2$, $C_4H_{10}$ etc. As tire feed rate increased, the composition of $CH_4$ in the gases was increased. As plasma power increased, the composition of $C_2H_2$ was increased. $C_2H_2$ and $C_4H_{10}$ were dominant and had the ratio over 70% in the gases. On the other hand the trends of pyrolysis was characterized in the thermal plasma from the results of TG analysis which shows the currents of decomposition of the char according to the temperature.

  • Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to propylene glycol was performed over binary and ternary metal oxide catalysts. The conversion of glycerol and selectivity to propylene glycol were increased on Cu/Zn and Cu/Cr mixed oxides compared to pure CuO and ZnO oxides. The addition of alumina into Cu/Zn mixed oxide very highly increased the conversion of glycerol and selectivity to propylene glycol. The conversion of glycerol was increased with increasing the reaction temperature but the selectivity to propylene glycol was shown to have maximum value at $200^{\circ}C$ and then decreased at $250^{\circ}C$. The conversion of glycerol and selectivity to propylene glycol were decreased with increasing the glycerol concentration.

  • Commercial catalyst (Cu-Zn/$Al_2O_3$, Johnson Matthey Co., 83-3 Catalyst) was applied to the hydrogen production by steam reforming of methanol in the micro-channel reactor (MCR). The steam reforming of methanol was tested over Cu-Zn catalyst at temperatures in the range of 200 and 300$^{\circ}C$, the catalyst size of 0.05${\sim}$2.2 mm, the space velocity of 3,000${\sim}$10,000 $hr^{-1}$ in a fixed bed continuous flow reactor. The conversion of methanol and the yield $H_2$ preferred high temperatures and low space velocities, and had optimal results with the particle size of 0.35 mm. Based on the results from experiments with fixed bed reactor, two types of MCR, boat bed and stacked bed MCRs, were studied. The stacked bed type MCR showed better methanol conversion compared with the boat type one.

  • Hydrogen energy is emphasized as a substitutable energy of carbon-based energy system in the future, since it is non-depletable and clean energy. Long term vision of Korean government on the national energy system is to promote hydrogen energy by 15% of final energy demand until 2040. This study analyzes economic impacts of hydrogen energy development employing a dynamic CGE model for Korea. Frontier technology such as hydrogen energy is featured as slow diffusion at the initial stage due to the learning effect and energy complementarity. Without government intervention, hydrogen energy would be produced upto 6.5% of final energy demand until 2040. However, if government subsidizes sales price of hydrogen energy by 10%, 20%, and 30%, share of hydrogen energy would increase 9.2%, 15.2%, and 37.7% of final energy demand. This result shows that the slow diffusion problem of hydrogen energy as frontier technology could be figured out by market incentive policy. On the other hand, production levels of transportation sector would increase while growth rate of oil and electricity sectors would decline. Household consumption would be affected negatively since increase of consumption due to the price decrease would be overwhelmed by income reduction owing to the increase of tax. Overall, GDP would not decrease or increase significantly since total production, investment, and export would increase even if household consumption declines.
