  • Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) has been detected as an excellent and new forage crop in Korea. Thus the objective of the study was to determine optimum planting season, growing degree days and productivity by shifting the planting season of pearl millet. Days to emergence of Australia pearl millet inbred line were shortened from 12 days to 3 days by delaying planting season from April 15 to July 15 in Suwon, 1986, but their growing degree days remained relatively constant 32.1$^{\circ}C$ in average. Days to heading also were shortened from 96 days to 54 days by shifting the planting season, but their growing degree days varied little being 697$^{\circ}C$ in average. For grain crop, economic planting season was from early May to late June, and their harvest index also did not varied much, but suddenly reduced in the July 15 planting plot. For forage crop, economic planting season was from mid-May to mid-June with optimum planting time of mid-May. Particularly, when planted in early July, 1987 and 1988, green fodder yields of Suwon 1 pearl millet hybrid were very low being 54 percent as compared with optimum planting season's yield 10.8t/10a.

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether seedling growth be affected by immature kernels from different stages after flowering in rye, triticale, wheat and oats cultivars, for two years in Suwon. Kernels reached a near-maximum test weight at 35 days after flowering in Paldanghomil and Dooroohomil (Rye), and 30 days in Sinkihomil (Triticale), Geurumil (Wheat), and Megwiri (Oats). Test weight of immature kernels from different days after flowering were not significantly correlated with germination percentage, but highly positively correlated with their seedling height, fresh and dry weight. However, seedling height is not different among seedlings from kernels harvested at 20, 25 and 30 days (maturing time) after flowering of Sinkihomil and Megwiri, and between 25 and 30 days (maturing time) of Geurumil. Also between seedlings from 25 day and 30 day-kernel after flowering are little difference of fresh and dry weight of Sinkihomil and Megwiri. In Suwon, located at the middle part of Korea, it was suggested that Paldanghomi1 and Dooroohomil could be harvested at 35 days (June 19, and June 24, respectively) after flowering, and Sinkihomil, Geurumil, and Megwiri, at 25days (June 24, June 14 and July 4, respectively) after flowering for seed of for2:ge production.

  • This study was conducted to estimate Hanwoo carrying capacity when whole crop barley or rye as winter forage crops was grown on different applying sources (chemical fertilizer, cattle or organic fertilizer) and mixed sowing combination with hairy vetch or forage pea during the period of 2008~2010. The experimental plots within whole crop barley or rye were consisted of 7 treatments, which were non-fertilizer, chemical fertilizer (P+K), chemical fertilizer (N+P+K), organic fertilizer, cattle slurry, cattle slurry with hairy vetch, and cattle slurry with forage pea. Each plot was triplicates and experimental treatments were allocated in the randomized complete block design. For whole crop barley, annual mean dry matter (DM) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yields were the highest in N+P+K plots, but there were no significant differences among organic fertilizer, cattle slurry and mixed sowing with legumes. The TDN and RFV were the highest in mixed sowing plots of forage pea plus cattle slurry application. As 450 kg Hanwoo heifers were fed diets included 70% whole crop barley, organic fertilizer, cattle slurry application and mixed sowing with legumes plots is capable of raising average 2.5 to 2.9 heads/ha a year. For whole crop rye, annual DM, crude protein, and TDN yields of application groups and mixed sowing treatment with legumes showed 6.69~7.13, 0.46~0.51 and 3.95~4.18 ton/ha, respectively. In case of 450 kg Hanwoo heifers fed diets included 70% forage rye, it is estimated that cattle slurry application (mixed sowing with legumes) plots can rear average 3.1~3.3 heads/ha a year. It can be concluded that, on the basis of DM yield, not only mixed sowing with legumes by applying cattle slurry rather than single sowing of whole crop barley or whole crop rye enhanced production yield and feed values, but also it could be a substitute for imported grains as dietary protein sources in the case of feeding Hanwoo.

  • 'Dagreen' (Scale cereal L.), a new rye variety was developed from the open pollination among 10 rye lines at the National Institute of Crop Science in 1995 and mass selection were made at National Institute of Crop Science from 1996 to 1999. Recurrent selections were made at Dept. Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA from 2000 to 2006. This new variety has erect plant type with medium size pale green leaves. The number of spike per $m^2$ was 713 and the plant height was 103cm. The heading date of 'Dagreen' was April 24 which was 7 days earlier than that of "Koolgrazer". It was adaptable for forage use at an early stage as a whole crop. Lodging resistance was higher than that of check variety 'Koolgrazer'. The chemical components and quality of forage showed 10.2 % crude protein, 36.6 % ADF, 62.4 % NDF and 59.9 % TDN. 'Dagreen' showed high resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust than those of check variety in the field condition. The average dry matter (7,010kg $ha^{-1}$) of 'Dagreen' harvested at April 28 were 6 % higher than 'Koolgrazer'. This variety is recommended for all of the rye cultivation area in Korea.

  • "Egreen" rye (Secale cereale L.) was developed by National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA. It was released in 2007 because of its excellent earliness and yield potential. Crossing was made by an open pollination with 10 rye lines in 1995. Many lines from the open pollinated population were handled in a mass selection program in subsequent generations. Among them the line 'SR95POP-S1-116-1-1-2'was selected for earliness and promising agronomic appearance and placed in yield trial for two years from 2003 to 2004. In 2005, it was designated "Homil 34" and subjected to regional yield trials. Over 3 years, "Egreen" averaged 8.34 MT ha-1 of forage yield (based on dry matter) harvested at the heading date of check variety "Olhomil", which was superior to other varieties such as "Olhomil" and "Koolgrazer" with an increase of 8% and 10%, respectively. Heading date of "Egreen" was April 22, 3 days earlier than that of "Olhomil". It would be recommended as a winter crop forforage and green manure before planting either maize or rice in Korea.

  • Effects of animal manure application on the yield of crops were studied. Red pepper (1995) and Chinese cabbage (1996) were planted in pot with chicken, cow and pig manure application at $1.6mg\;ha^{-1}$, $3.2mg\;ha^{-1}$. Silage corn was grown in pot at 100%, 75%, 50% and 0%of recommended chemical fertilization rate among previously manure applied soils to predict the reduction of fertilizer. Results were as follows: Chemical properties of manure applied soils for two years were increased as pH 6.1~7.1, OM $17.1{\sim}23.7g\;kg^{-1}$, $P_2O_5$ $370{\sim}1.058mg\;kg^{-1}$, while those of chemical fertilizer applied soils were pH 5.8. OM $16.9g\;kg^{-1}$, $P_2O_5$ $249mg\;kg^{-1}$. Exchangeable cation and $P_2O_5$ content were increased in chicken manure applied soils than those in manure applied soils. Red pepper yield in manure applied pots was 121~192% compared to that in only chemical fertilizer applied pot. Effects of manure application was in the order of pig, chicken and cow manure. Chinese cabbage yield in manure applied pots was 55%~111% compared to that in chemical fertilizer applied pot. Effects of manure application were higher in red pepper than in Chinese cabbage. Fresh corn yield showed no significance between reducing 0% and 25% of recommend fertilization rate in previously manure applied plots, except in previously cow manure applied plots at $1.6mg\;ha^{-1}$. Fresh corn yield showed a positive correlation ($r=0.75^{**}$) with organic matter content and showed a positive correlation ($r=0.85^{**}$) with total nitrogen in untreated plot among previously manure applied soils.

  • This experiment was carried out in order to examine the winterhardiness, heading date, fresh and dry matter yeild of Festulolium braunii, a hybrid of Festuca pratensis and Lolium multiflum, which is newly introduced in Korea. This experiment was performed at National Livestock Research Institute in Suwon and Namwon from September 2004 to July 2005. The results are as follows. 'Fleurial', 'Boxer', and 'Perun' showed stronger winterhardiness than 'Hwasan 101', which is one of the strongest in the winterhardiness hybrids. Therefore, we do not see there is any problem in winterhardiness when these hybrids are cultivated in Korea. The hybrids are turned out to be mid and late maturing hybrid. The average heading dates of the three hybrids were May 25 in Namwon and May 27 in Suwon. These dates are lower($1{\sim}3$ days) than that of Hwasan 101. They showed $91{\sim}96cm$ in leaf length at 1st cutting times which are comparatively long. This experiment also disclosed that their lodging and regrowth are strong and excellent. We also found out that there are significant difference between regions and hybrids in the total fresh yield per ha. The average fresh yield of Suwon was 83,222 kg/ha and that of Namwon was 69,139 kg/ha. We could not see any difference in the dry matter yield affected by region, however, there were significant difference in hybrids(p<0.05). The crude protein contents of the three hybrids indicated very high figures. the crude protein cotents of Perun, Fleurial and Boxer are 18.0% 17.4% and 16.7% respectively. However the ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber) shows $28.1{\sim}29.2%$ which is less contents than 33.2% of Hwasan 101. We found out from this experiment that these three hybrids have excellent feed quality because the NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber) is decreased by $7{\sim}3.8%$ comparing that the NDF of Hwasan 101 is 58.3%. Also each hybrids contains more crude fat by 1%, a little more chemical composition and less ash contents. Thus we can tern that chemical composition contents of these hybrids are also fittable.

  • An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of seeding rates and nitrogen fertilization levels on the agronomic characteristics, nutritive value and forage yield of spring oat(Avena sativa L.). This experiment was undertaken over a period of 2 months from September to November, 1987. The results obtained are summarized as follows : Increased seeding rates of 120, 160 and 200kg/ha decreased emergence rates by 93.4, 71.4 and 70.6 %, respectively(P<0.05). Tillering was decreased by higher seeding rates(P<0.05) and that of 120kg/ha of seeding rate with 200kg/ha of nitrogen fertilization level was highest by 3.3. Among three seeding rates, tillering of 200 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilization level was lowest by 2.1. Leaf width was influenced by seeding rates. When seeding rate was increased, narrow leaf width (P

  • This field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of fertilizer application time in spring on the growth, crude protein(CP) content and dry matter(DM) yield of grasses for soiling. Application times of fertilizer were March 10, 20, 30, April 9 and 19, and control (non-fertilized) plot was involved. All fertilized plots were also treated with single- and compound fertilizer. The first harvesting date for soiling was May 12, and the regrowth soiling yield was investigated on June 9, 1988. In all fertilized plots, the growth, DM yield, CP, CP yield and regrowth yield of gasses were significantly increased compared with control, and the best grass growth, DM yield, CP, CP yield and N recovery were observed on March 30 and April 9 among all fertilized plots. And there were not significant differences between singleand compound fertilizer treatment in grass growth, DM yield and CP content. On March 30 and April 9 in this experiment, the accumulated temperature was 120 and 200^{\circ}C.$ and the subsoil temperature at 10 cm depth was 8 and 10^{\circ}C.$. Considering the average meteorological condition in Suwon area, the optimum application time of spring fertilizer for soiling may be recommended from April 3 to April 10.

  • In order to identify the growth characterization, the yield and chemical composition of Jeju barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli var. fiurnentacea(Roxb) Wight) based on seeding date in Jeju region, seeding carried out the 10-day intervals from March 27 to September 30 in 2000, respectively. Plant height was 143.2 cm, showing the highest on seeding date, April 6 among that of any other seeding date. On the other hand, those of early and late seeding gradually decrease. Plant height was 119.2 an in May 16 seeding. The results of stem diameter, number of withering leaves, number of leaves and fresh weight per plant were similar to those of the plant heights. The yield of fresh, dry matter forage, crude protein and TDN found the highest on April 6 seeding, 63.5 MT/ha, 13.9 MTha, 1.1 MT/ha, and 7.6 MT/ha, respectively. In early and late seeding, the yield was gradually decreased. In seeding May 16, the yield found .38.2 MTIha in fresh forage, 6.2 MTha in dry matter forage, 0.7 MT/ha in crude protein and 3.7 MTha in TDN, respectively. According to delaying the seeding date, March 27 to May 16, the contents of crude protein (from 7.9 to 10.8%), ether extract (from 4.6 to 6.0%), nitrogen free extract (from 45.1 to 46.5%), and TDN (from 54.2 to 60.8%) were gradually increased, respectively. On the other hand, those of crude fiber (from 28.9 to 25.6%) and crud ash (from 13.5 to 11.2%) were decreased. These results showed that April 6 was the optimum seeding date with the sole object of feed production of Jeju barnyard grass under the environmental condition like as atmospheric phenomena and soil in Jeju region. (Key words : Jeju barnyard grass, Seeding date, Forage yield, Chemical composition)
