  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of high school students' academic problems such as academic stress and low academic achievement on suicidal ideation and the mediating effects of individual-level risk factors (e.g., depression, aggression) and protective factors (self-esteem, emotion regulation) on the relationship between academic problems and suicidal ideation. This study used data of three waves(2005-2007) from the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). The analyses were conducted on 2,093 academic high school students, who participated in this panel study. The results from structural equation modeling show that academic stress has positive effects on depression and aggression, but negative effect on self-esteem. Low academic achievement has positive effect on aggression but negative effect on self-esteem. Depression and aggression as individual-level risk factors have positive effects on suicidal ideation. In contrast, self-esteem and emotion regulation as individual-level protective factors have negative effects on suicidal ideation. The relationship between academic problems and suicidal ideation is mediated by depression, aggression, and self-esteem. Based on the study findings, practice implications for youth welfare are discussed to screen high-risk youths and to prevent adolescent suicide in advance.

A total of 86 studies, both published and unpublished manuscripts, were included. The results showed that depression of children and adolescents were positively associated with self-esteem, social support, and functional parenting attitudes, and negatively related to academic stress. The largest effect size was found in the relationship with self-esteem, followed by the relationships with academic stress, social support, and functional parenting attitudes, all in the range between moderate and large effect size. As the analysis indicated the heterogeneity of the results, subsequent analyses were performed to test the moderating effects of instrument and age. The significant moderators were the types of instruments used to measure self-esteem, academic stress, parenting attitudes, and depression. Age was also a significant moderator.

  • This study was conducted to examine the academic stress, menstrual attitude, and dysmenorrhea of adolescents and to understand their effects on dysmenorrhea. The subjects of the study were high school girls and 131 people who agreed to participate in the study were analyzed. Correlation analysis shows that the more negative the person is about menstruation, the more severe the physical symptoms, the more active the action, and the greater the emotional change, the more severe the person experienced dysmenorrhea. Factors affecting dysmenorrhea in adolescents were physical symptoms and positive acceptance among menstrual attitudes, and 68.8 percent explained the variable. In conclusion, considering the positive acceptance of menstruation and physical symptoms of adolescents, it is necessary to develop educational programs that provide integrated knowledge to manage dysmenorrhea in school health, and further individual and multidimensional approaches such as emotional support programs for negatively experienced emotions.

A convenient sample drawn from the 842 students from 8 junior high schools in Seoul and Kyunggi-Do area was investigated with a survey instrument. Female students showed higher academic stress levels compared to male students, especially in terms of the stress related to teachers, class time, and peer relationships. For the male students, higher stress levels were related to the higher risk factors of smoking, drinking and inhaling drug abuse. Students who had higher academic stress levels spent more time in using computer and playing digital games compared to those who had lower academic stress. In addition, higher academic stress levels were significantly related to risk of mental health, especially depression. These results suggest the urgent needs of preventive or educational program to support students with academic stress resolve in healthy manners such as playing sports or music or club activities.
