  • This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of a recently developed and applied art therapy program. The subjects of the study were twenty-two students at two middle schools in Busan, Korea. Before conducting the study, the parents' agreement was sought, after which the study program was explained to the participating students in private interviews. The twenty-two students were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group, with eleven students in each group. Ten sessions of ninety minutes each, twice a week, were conducted for the experimental group. The verification of the effectiveness was done through pre, post, and follow-up examinations. The results of the data analysis are as follows. First, the art therapy program appeared to help reduce suicidal thoughts among those who had them. Second, the art therapy program reduced the depression of adolescents in the study. Third, the art therapy program improved the self-esteem of the study's subjects. In addition, a follow-up examination showed that the effects of the program appear to last. This paper offers proposals for interventions in the suicidal thoughts of adolescents and the practical implication of the interventions and future research paths.

Lifetime experience with e-cigarettes (OR:1.866) and current use of e-cigarettes (OR:1.651) for male adolescents and lifetime experience with e-cigarettes (OR:2.375) and current use of e-cigarettes (OR:1.841) for female adolescents were influential factors on suicidal thinking. Lifetime experience with e-cigarettes (OR:1.307) among male adolescents and lifetime experience with e-cigarettes (OR:1.616) among female adolescents were influencing factors for generalized anxiety disorder. Second, suicidal ideation was found a significant positive relationship with maladaptive perfectionism, depression, academic stress. Third, as a result of examining path coefficient, it was found to be influenced significantly by all of the path from maladaptive perfectionism to depression and academic stress, the path from depression to suicidal ideation, the path from academic stress to suicidal ideation. However, the path from maladaptive perfectionism to suicidal ideation was found to be statistically insignificant. Fourth, the result showed that depression and academic stress worked as complete mediators between maladaptive perfectionism and suicidal ideation. These findings give useful information about affective aspects of gifted adolescents in hard circumstances. The results of the study will be helpful in devising consultation and educational programs for the gifted who are in danger of suicide.

  • This study aims to determine the effects of mental health on obesity among Korean adolescents. The data in this study were obtained from the 2013 Korean Youth Health Risk Behavior Web-based Survey conducted in 70,354 adolescents aged twelve to eighteen (35,575 males and 34,779 females) from June 1 to 30, 2013. The variables included age, the economic status of household, academic achievement, health status, perceived happiness, perceived stress, satisfaction of sleeping, perceived depression, and suicidal ideation and the data were processed using t-test, chi square test, and logistic regression analysis. The general characteristics affecting obesity for both Korean male and female adolescents included age (p<0.001), the economic status of households (p<0.001), academic achievement (p<0.001), and health status (p<0.001); the variable of mental health affecting obesity was suicidal ideation among females (p<0.05). It is expected that female adolescents' experience of suicidal ideation can be used as information to predict the likelihood of obesity in managing an obesity program for adolescents and it is necessary to provide obesity education suitable for age and to include obesity guidance in consideration of gender and the economic status.

  • This study examined the mental health-related factors of Korean adolescents, especially focusing on the influence of internet use. This study analyzed the raw data from the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2018. The study population was 60,040, with 50.7% male students and 49.3% female students, and 49.7% high school students and 50.3% middle school students. The dependent variables were stress, sadness and despair, suicidal ideation, suicidal plan, and suicidal attempt. The independent variables were gender and age, health behaviors, and time using the internet. Logistic regression analysis was applied to derive the related factors. For all dependent variables, the main contributing variables were gender, grade, economic status, and academic performance. The mental health of adolescents was related to various factors. In particular, the time using the internet was linearly related to the degree of stress, and a higher student group of time using the internet had a more significant effect on sadness, despair, suicidal thoughts, and suicidal plans. In conclusion, the time using the internet has harmful effects on the mental health of Korean adolescents.
