  • Temporal and spatial variations and species composition of ichthyoplanktons were investigated by Bongo net in a sea area with the construction of artificial upwelling structure at 13, June, 21 September, and 23 September in 2012. A total of fish eggs was 4,849 ind./$1,000m^3$, and fish larvaes was 641 ind./$1,000m^3$ in the study area. The common fish eggs was Engraulis japonicus which was composed of 57.5%, and unidentified I, II, III and IV were occurred with decreased number of individuals order. For fish larvaes, Pictiblennius yatabei, Repomucenus sp.A, sp.B and Scomber japonicus were dominated, however, other species were Engraulis japonicus, Konosirus puntatus, and unidentified I, II. Temporal variations of fish eggs and larvae were remarkable differed. Higher numbers of fish eggs and larvaes were July 2012, whereas those were lower at August 2012. Spatial variations of those were also significantly differed with higher numbers were at station 2 and 3 during study periods. The total number of fish eggs and larvae was about 4 fold against numbers of those in the compared area far from study area. These results indicated that higher numbers of fish eggs and larvaes were due to influx much more nutrients and food organisms with artificial upwelling.

  • The feeding habits of post-larval Yatabe blenny Parablennius yatabei (2.0-9.8 mm SL) were examined on the basis of 158 individuals collected from June to October in the coastal waters of eastern Jinhae Bay, South Korea. Based on the index of relative importance (IRI), post-larval P. yatabei fed 94.4% on copepods and 5.6% on tintinnids. The preference of post-larval P. yatabei for copepods to other prey items results from ontogenetic changes. The dietary percentage of copepods increased as fish size increased and tintinnids became less important. The feeding rate of post-larval P. yatabei was consistent at all times of day.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of fish larvae assemblages in the south-western Jinhae Bay were investigated monthly in 2009. During the study period, 49 larvae species belonging to 24 families were collected. The dominant species were Clupea pallasii, Hexagrammos otakii, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonicus, Parablennius yatabei, and Omobranchus elegansei. These six species accounted for 92.7% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of species and individuals occurred in July and January, respectively. Principal component analysis(PCA) and correlation analysis showed that variation in monthly water temperature could act as an indicator of seasonal variation in community structure and abundance of the dominant species; in particular, those of C. pallasii, H. otakii, E. japonicus and P. yatabei corresponded with the water temperature.

  • In order to identify the species composition and distribution pattern of larval fish assemblages in the southern coastal waters of Korea, monthly samples were taken using an RN80 net which was towed horizontally in three different regions (Yeosu, Namhae and Tongyoung) between May to September 2016. A total of fifty taxa were collected during the study. Among these, Engraulis japonicus, which accounted for 56.8 % of the total population, was the most dominant species, followed by Sillago japonicus, Parablennius yatabei, Gobiidae Type A, Parablennidae sp., and Omobranchus elegans as dominant taxa, that accounted for 87.5% of the total number of individuals. ANOSIM results revealed that regional groups were not separated, but seasonal groups were clearly divided with statistical significance, and these differences were caused mainly by water temperature variations identified by canonical analysis.

  • This study investigated the temporal patterns of species composition and abundance of larval fish assemblages through seasonal samplings in the coastal waters off Uljin, East Sea from April 2022 to February 2023. A total of 27 taxa of larval fishes were collected in the study area. The dominant fish larvae were Pseudopleuronectes herzensteini, Sebastes inermis, Ammodytes japonicus, Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, Rudarius ercodes and Parablennius yatabei constituting 86.6% of total larval fish abundance. The number of species, abundance, and diversity index fluctuated according to season, showing the highest species number and abundance in April (spring) and diversity in July (summer). Larval fish assemblages were divided into three seasonal groups, including spring, summer and winter groups based on relative abundance of each fish larvae. Among abundant fish larvae, P. herzensteini predominated during spring, while P. yatabei and R. ercodes were abundant during summer. S. inermis, A. japonicus and P. yokohamae constituted the most abundant larval fish group during winter. These temporal changes in larval fish assemblages were attributed to seasonal changes in surface water temperature. The results from this study may elucidate our understanding of larval fish diversity and contribute to evaluating the nursery function of coastal habitats in the East Sea.

  • The blenniid fish, Pictiblennius yatabei(Jordan et Snyder) is ditributed in the central and southern Japan and southern Korea. The fish grows to a maximum size of 9cm in total length, and it seems to be matured in two years. Sex dimorphisms of the fish appear in the crest and the anal fin. Five egg masses of the fish were collected in Tongyoung Bay near Kyeong Nam on June 16 and 20, 1991. The eggs were laid on inner surface of empty shells of the oyster, Crassotrea gigas and blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. Each egg mass was guarded by the male parent. Numbers of eggs in each of masses were as about 450~1000.The eggs were spherical but somewhat oval in shape and ranged from 0.72 to 0.80mm in longer axis and from 0.55 to 0.65mm in shorter axis. Each egg was provided with an adhesive pedestal. Hatching took place in 105 hours after formation of embyo at the water temperature varying from 20.0 to $21.4^{\circ}C$. Melanophores appearing on the yolk remarkably changed in form during the embryonic development. The newly hatched larvae, having 32~34 somites, were from 2.71 to 3.35mm in total length. The larvae absorbed the yolk material and oil globule completely in 7 days after hatching and became postlarvae. Nine days after hatching, the larvae averaged 5.35mm in TL and the caudal notochord flex at $45^{\circ}$ Total lengths of the larvae reached 6.00 and 6.58mm in 11 and 13 days after the hatching, respectively.
