An application of concrete track is being actively processed for the construction of Korean high speed railway. The concrete track has an advantage in decreasing the maintenance cost, whereas it has much difficulty controlling the long term settlement after settlement occurred. Therefore, the management and control of settlement are very important for the successful construction of concrete track. The purpose of this paper is to verify the allowable settlement between concrete track and ballast track, and piled raft foundation installation effects as settlement reducers for concrete track. Therefore, a series of 3D finite element analyses that take into account the allowable settlement were performed for major parameters such as soil condition, pile installation and loading type. Based on the analysis, it is shown that concrete track causes much smaller settlement than ballast track, and the effect of installation is necessary to effectively reduce the settlement of concrete track.

As a basic study to develop maintenance-effective optimal ballast track in preparation for upgrading a conventional line to a high speed railway, a full-scale test that combined the components of ballast track was conducted and the characteristic of track settlement was analyzed. As a result of the full-scale test, reduction in maintenance via an increase of the elasticity of only the pad was insignificant; however, the effect increased significantly with increasing of the weight of the sleeper or with increasing of the weight of the sleeper and the thickness of the ballast together with use of a pad with high resiliency. An optimal type of ballast track, in line with upgrading the speed of a conventional line, shall be developed through cost efficiency analysis considering the maintenance cost depending on the track settlement as well as the initial construction cost.
Track system and periodic live load are characteristics of railway bridges. In the design and construction of railway bridge, periodic live load increases the importance of dynamic behavior. And It is well known that behavior of railway bridge may be affected by track system in real bridge. Through experimental study, static and dynamic behaviors were investigated. Deflection and stress due to bending moment were measured, the location of neutral axis of each section, natural frequency, damping ratio were analyzed for each three track systems - girder only, installed ballast track system and installed concrete slab track system. According to measured values for the each type of track system, concrete track system increases the stiffness of bridge by 50%, and ballast system does by 7%, dynamic responses of structure change linearly with the magnitude of load and location of neutral axis of each sections varies with each track system. Damping ratio is almost equal without and with track. Therefore, the effects of track system on the integral behaviors of railway bridge can not be ignored in the design of bridge, especially in the case of concrete slab track system. So study of the quantitative analysis method for effects of track system must be performed.
Transition tracks are an alternative for enhancing the long-term serviceability and durability of concrete track components in railway bridges. The goal of this paper is to investigate the structural behavior for transition track systems of railway bridge deck ends. In this study, the structural behavior of transition tracks such as the variations in static, dynamic, and fatigue behaviors and dynamic properties (natural frequency and damping ratio) are assessed and compared through performing loading tests and finite element analyses using actual vehicle impact loadings. As a result, it is found that the structural behavior of the transition track system is expected to satisfy the actual vehicle impact loading, and the variation in the neutral axis and dynamic characteristics are not affected by the fatigue loading. Therefore, it is inferred that the structural capacity and long-term durability of the transition track system is proven.
In this study, proposed is the methodology to determine the upper limit for stiffness of rail pad for the ballasted and concrete track in high-speed railway in the viewpoint of running safety, considering the dynamic characteristics of train and track and the operation environment. For the track irregularity, one of the most important input parameters for traintrack interaction analysis, the reference vertical track irregularity PSDs(power spectral densities) for the ballasted and concrete track in a wide range of frequencies were proposed based on those presented in France and Germany and that obtained from the measured data at Kyeong-Bu 1st phase high-speed railway line. Using these reference PSD models, the input data for the vertical track irregularity data were regenerated by random generation process, and then, the wheel load reduction rates according to the stiffness of the rail pads have been calculated by the train-track interaction analysis technique. Finally, by comparing the wheel load reduction rates calculated with the derailment criteria prescribed in the Korean standards for railway vehicle safety criteria, the upper limits for the stiffness of rail pad have been proposed.
Concrete slab track was applied to the Gyeoungbu High Speed Railroad step 2 and the Honam High Speed Railroad. Concrete slab track incurs higher construction cost and lower maintenance cost than existing gravel track. For these reasons, the use of concrete slab track has increased in Korea. The biggest problem in the use of concrete slab track is repairing damage from settlement that can occur while trains are in service. High speed railroad design standards require allowable residual settlement of concrete slab track of less than 25mm. In order to satisfy the requirement of long term stability of concrete slab track, it is necessary to manage the secondary compression settlement within the allowable residual settlement. This study is to evaluate the secondary compression settlement with the variation of the secondary compression index, thickness of soft ground, and concrete slab track life. Statistical analysis is performed to determine the probability of distribution of areas where serious problems will be caused after the concrete slab track is constructed.
Purpose: Concrete track that affects on railway safety can detect cracks using image processing technique. However, since a condition of concrete track and surface noisy are obstructed to detect cracks, there is a need for a way to remove them effectively. Method: In this study, we proposed an image processing to detect cracks effectively for Korean railway and verified its performance through experiment. We developed image acquisition system for capture a railway concrete track and acquired railway concrete track images, randomly selected 2000 images and detected cracks in the image process using proposed Gabor Filter Bank methods. Results: As a result, 94% of detection rate are matched to the actual cracks in same quality and format railway concrete track image. Conclution: The crack detection method using Garbor Filter Bank was confirmed to be effective for crack image including noise in the Korean railway concrete track. This system is expected to become an automated maintenance system in the existing human-centered railway industry.
For many decades, the railway was constructed using tracks with jointed rails of relatively short lengths. The joints cause many drawbacks in the track and lead to signeficant maintenance cost. so, railroad engineers became interested in eliminating joints. Continuous welded rail(CWR) track has many advantages over the conventional jointed-rail track. but, in the case of the elimination of rail joints, it may cause the track to be suddenly buckled laterally by thermal loads. In this paper, firstly, 3-D CWR track model and CWRB program exactly considering the influence of tie are developed far linear static and buckling analysis using finite element method. Characteristics of CWR track model are using 7-dofs beam element as rail, Offset technic exactly considering centroid axies difference of track components(rail, rail-pad-fastener, tie), and Thermal gradient considering thermal difference of top flange and bottom flange in rail section.. second,, Through the static and linear buckling analysis by CWRB, Influences of various track components (rail, ballast, fastener, tie and so on..) on CWR track behavior and stability was characterized.
