  • The rail surface defects which are generated on repeated rolling contact fatigue are getting increased according to high speed, high density, and minimum weight. In addition, Increasing noise and vibration are affected by these also impact load generated as well. Because of this phenomenon, more serious and critical damages were occurred. In fact, in order to control them, the rail grinding amount in Korea. This study evaluated how depth of hardening on rail surface is formed and suggested optimal rail grinding amount by RCF(rolling contact fatigue) test with generated contact pressure between KTX wheel and UIC60 rail by applying FEM analysis. Therefore, the amount was generated approximately 0.2mm/20MGT to maintain integrity of rail surface by getting rid of depth of hardening on rail according to rail accumulated passing tonnage.

  • Environmental impact is getting more attention in many feasibility studies for railroad-related projects and research items. For sustainable growth and green transportation, the benefits typically used for feasibility studies in railway-related projects, are composed mostly of economic criterions which is not considering growing attention on changing paradigm. Based on the analysis of current methodologies, improvements in estimating environmental impact especially on noise and pollution are suggested. Active steering bogie has been proposed to satisfy stabilizing and steering performance of railroad. This paper describes the feasibility study of the active steering bogie for a urban railway vehicle based on environment-related criteria.

  • High speed circuit breakers(HSCB) interrupt the generated arc within the arc chute to turn off the electricity flowing through the main circuit to prevent ground faults. In order to explore the arc generated from the contactor operation, arc definition, establishment of arc interruption method, and analysis of magnetic driving force are required. In this paper, arc interruption capability has been estimated by exploring the difference in magnetic flux density of Lorenz forces using finite element analysis. In addition, since the number of grids and changes in the grid shape within the arc chute influence the formation of the inner magnetic field, its effects have been explored to enhance arc interruption capability. Assessment of interruption capability and analysis of grid shape, with rated operating current, are reported.

  • Recently, power quality problems in AC high-Speed Railway system have been raised, because heavy train and its higher speed are required in addition to new control system by using the Electronic devices. The installation/operation of the Series Capacitor(SC) has been only a device far voltage drop in power system up to now. However, the sufficient effectiveness of compensating In voltage drop has not been proved yet because of technical limitationf SC, and harmonic resonance is attracting a attention as one of new issues. Several problems are expected such as vocational problems of a traction substation, and overloading caused by a new construction of electric railway and the in transport. Therefore, extension of power feeding the fault in the traction substation should be also considered. So this paper represents the application of TSC-SVC on the electric railway power feeding system as a device of voltage compensation, and the simulations are executed through PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • The process of inspecting electric railway vehicles is complicated and these vehicles accompany a risk of safety accidents. This developed system will be a great help in simplifying the shunting process and be very useful in terms of ensuring safety and providing user convenience. In this paper, the results of performance evaluation tests are studied on a movable catenary system for railway vehicles that secured mechanical durability, convenience, and operator safety by applying a specific rigid bar catenary of an existing mobile train line. We presented an analysis of the basic characteristics for site installation including sorting. In conclusion, this developed system was obtained in good results through durability test, durable mechanical load test and safety test in require specifications.

  • Recently, a safety control platform to monitor the safety of train operation in real time and prevent accidents and risks through control is under study. In the initial design, DDS communication method supporting distributed network is adopted for real-time processing of large amount of data according to the integration of existing distributed safety data. However, communication between server and console inside the safety control platform is applied to existing TCP socket communication. In the case of TCP socket communication, it is possible to process data for a small system of a safety control test bed by one-to-one communication. However, if the data is expanded all over the country in the future, it becomes difficult to cope with a case where communication traffic occurs due to vast amount of data. In this paper, we propose DDS communication method to support distributed network between server and console of security control platform, and demonstrate TCP socket and DDS method, and compare throughput and speed. As a result, we have found that the scalability and flexibility are improved in case of applying DDS communication to future systems.

  • Railway obstacle detecion system has been introduced with high-speed railway in 2004 to prevent accidents by obstacles such as landslide, rockfall and things fallen from the gauntry over the railway. But existing system has some limitation for landslide or fallen obstacle over railway. Therefore, In this study, we suggest new advanced obstacle detection system introducing the OTDR, optical fiber fences and detection cameras. This system can detect depression degree by the force to the fences and video for the specific region as well as detection wire Off condition. We produce and functional tests for fiber fence and OTDR, which are the core parts of the development system, and results were obtained to demonstrate improved detection capabilities. Several functions also been tested to verify the advanced detection performance and got some satisfactory results. Further we will conduct environment tests and field test.

  • This research revealed the operation problems of the current crossing control systems through inspecting and testing the obstacle detection systems and gate control systems for the crossings. To resolve the problems of the crossing control systems, this research developed new algorithms of four-quadrant gate system and obstacle detection systems combing the functions of rasar sensors and magnetic sensors and tested the reliability of the systems. Currently, the obstacle detection systems and gate control systems controls approaching and departing traffic by simply detecting vehicles and obstacles but do not consider traffic movements at the crossings. In addition, they do not make signal cooperation for gate controls. As a result, such inefficient crossing controls result in unsafe gate controls for drivers. Therefore, the newly developed crossing control systems through this study will provide more effective crossing control services with more strengthen information cooperation within control systems. Besides they will help to reduce train crashes at the crossings by gate control systems considering various driving behaviors.

  • Railroad level crossing systems are used to prevent train from collisions by informing pedestrians and vehicles of approaching trains on the level crossing. The current detection systems mostly use track-based electrical circuits to detect approaching trains. The making and breaking of the circuit when the train wheel passes along the track sends a signal to barriers that restrict access to the track. Unfortunately, this track-based signal system is vulnerable to malfunctions in certain situations. If the rail becomes rusted due to moisture, weather conditions, or infrequent use, the electrical circuit detection system could fail. Such a failure could lead to a train-vehicle or train-pedestrian collision. This paper suggests a replacement of the electrical circuit-based system with an infrared detection system. The research shows that an infrared detection system improves safety by reducing the frequency of detection failure of the alarming circuit to system.

  • Currently, dozens of CCTVs are widely used in railway station for monitoring passengers in danger and security areas. The most frequent accidents occur at the platform area where passengers boarding the train. However, It is almost impossible that station operator monitors dozens of CCTV screens and recognizes immediately accidents and handle them. Therefore, railway platform monitoring system using image processing technology which automatically detects platform accidents is needed, and in order to that, preferentially, accurate determination of train state in the platform is required. In the paper, we propose train state detection algorithm for vision based railway platform monitoring system. the proposed algorithm determines four different states i.e. trains approach(IN), departure(OUT), stop(ON), and empty(OFF) of the train, in the platform. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we present the train detection results for the Seoul Metro Line 4 Dongjak and Namtaeryeong Station.
