In this study, the experimental and analytical study were performed on the location of longitudinal cracks in the middle of underground box structures. The location where the longitudinal cracking occurred was investigated that the overlapping joint of the rebar and the section of maximum tensile stress generated. Using the finite element analysis, the strength reduction ratio of the rebar was estimated by lack of overlap joint length. As the result of adequacy investigation for the length of the overlap joint presented in the design criteria, it was analytically proved that the lack of the overlap joint length could be cause the decreasing cross-sectional force and concrete cracking. As the result of this study, the adequacy of the overlapping criterion in the current design criteria was confirmed based on the finite element analysis and actual field case. In the case of overlapping joints installed in inappropriate position, it was considered that a long term crack control would be need to ensure the sufficient safety factor for the designed cross-sectional force.
In order to properly evaluate the shear strength of reinforced concrete circular columns due to the transverse shear reinforcement, the average of fractions of forces generated along the circular transverse hoops across the shear failure plane in the loading direction is calculated. For this, the center-to-center diameter of circular transverse hoops. spacing and the crack angle measured to the column longitudinal axis are considered. Using these variables, an equation representing the effective section area of circular transverse shear steel is proposed. The study result shows that the constant parameter. used for the calculation of the effective section area of circular hoops over the last 10 years, should not universally be applied any more. The use of the constant parameter may not seriously do harm to the evaluation of shear strength for circular columns with non-seismically designed transverse hoop reinforcement, since it gives slightly conservative results. However. for well-confined circular columns with close spacing or circular steel jacketing. it gives about 20% overestimation of the shear capacity contributed by the transverse hoop steel.

In this study, steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams with ordinary steel reinforcements, that are below minimum steel reinforcement amount specified in domestic concrete structure design code, were tested in flexure until failure. Steel reinforcement ratio considered were 44%, 66%, 78% and 100% of the minimum steel reinforcement. Considered steel fiber volume fractions were 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1.00%. In results, it is confirmed that steel fibers greatly improve crack performance. Also, the steel fibers contributed to increment in yield load not in ultimate load. But the increment was not greater than the reduction by steel reinforcement reduction. The use of steel fibers in RC beams lightly reinforced below the minimum reinforcement ratio specified design code reduced ductility greatly. Consequently, steel reinforcement ratio in steel fiber-reinforced beams lightly reinforced below the minimum steel reinforcement should be increased in order to enhance proper ductility.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. Fourteen circular reinforced concrete bridge piers were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. In the companion paper, the proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel is verified by comparison with experimental results.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the structural performance of mortar-filled ductile cast iron sleeve splice developed for SD500 high-strength reinforcing bar under cyclic loading. The test variables adopted in this study are the development length of bar, compressive strength of mortar, bar size, sleeve types and others. In this research, it is showed that the mortar-filled sleeve splice for SD500 high-strength bar satisfied the structural performance required in ACI, AIJ code as well as domestic code. Also the results of experimental research presented in this paper provided basic engineering data for developing a reasonable design method of mortar-filled sleeve splice for SD500 high-strength reinforcing bar.

This paper concerns the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beams with ultra-high performance cementitious composites(UHPCC). It was investigated if the existing equations to estimate the flexural capacity of reinforced fiberous concrete beams are applicable with the experiments including lightly reinforced concrete beams. The reinforcing effect when the steel fiber reinforced concrete was used in beams was also estimated. The results showed that the equation to predict the flexural capacity of reinforced steel fiber concrete by ACI 544 committee didn't have a good agreement with the test results and underestimated the flexural capacity in especially lightly reinforced beams with under 1.5% reinforcement ratio. the enhancement of flexural capacity was quite considerable in lightly reinforced beams when the steel fiber reinforced concrete was used. A equation to predict the reinforcing effect of steel fiber in reinforced steel fiber beams was developed. the equation was proposed as a function of both the characteristics of steel fiber and reinforcement ratio.

Among several splicing system of reinforcing bar, the grout-filled splice sleeve system has been applied widely. However, as the splice sleeve for high strength rebar as SD500 is not yet made in korea, the development of splice sleeve for high strength reinforcing bar are required as soon as possible. It is the purpose of this study to develop the steel pipe sleeve for high strength rebar as SD500 and estimate its structural performance by monotonic loading test. The experimental variables adopted in this study are the development length of rebars, types of sleeve etc. The results of this study showed that the developed steel pipe splice sleeve system for high strength reinforcing bar as SD500 retained the structural performance required in domestic, ACI and AIJ criteria. And it is considered that the study result presented in this paper can be helpful in developing reasonable design method of steel pipe splice sleeve system for high strength reinforcing bar as SD500.

The steel design based on the width of transverse crack which is the major factor to affect a long-term performance of continuously reinforced concrete pavement was developed. For this study, twenty-one cities of Texas were selected and the temperature data was collected at those locations during the past ten years. From the data, zero-stress temperatures were calculated by the PavePro program and the widths of transverse crack were analyzed by the CRCP program. The variables used to this numerical analysis were slab thickness, coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete, steel ratio, and design temperature. The total of 448 factorial runs were made and the regression analysis was performed using the results. Steel ratios from the regression equations were backcalculated and a steel design table was proposed.
The limitation of the yield strength in reinforced concrete columns is given for the effective use of high-strength steel bar, because very high-strength steel bar does not yield while concrete fails in compression. In order to overcome this limitation, it is required to increase peak strain of the concrete. The objective of this study is to examine the confinement effect of plate type lateral reinforcement in reinforced concrete columns. From this experimental study, the reinforced concrete columns confined by plate type carbon fiber sheets showed higher compressive strength and peak concrete strain comparing to the unconfined columns. The confinement effect is higher when cross-sectional type is a circular one than a square one. Moreover, the confinement effect was also higher for circular type confinement. Based on this study, high-strength steel bars with strength exceeding 800 MPa can be effectively used for reinforced concrete columns confined by plate type lateral reinforcements.
The grouted splice steeve has been applied widely due to its superior construction efficiency, such as the unnecessity of post concrete and the large allowable limit to the arrangement of reinforcing bars. However, studies on grout-filled splice steeve still have not been sufficiently peformed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the confining effect of mortar grouted splice sleeve on reinforcing bar, known to strengthen the bond capacity between grout mortar and reinforcing bar. To accomplish this objective, totally 6 full-sized specimens were made and tested under monotonic loading. Each specimens were equipped with strain gauges at the 12 location of sleeve and reinforcing bar. The experimental variables adopted in this study are embedment length and size of reinforcing bars. Following conclusions are obtained; 1) Under ultimate strength condition, the confining pressure of grouted splice sleeve calculated from measured tangential and axial strain of the sleeve is over $200{\sim}300kgf/{cm}^2$ at any location of sleeve and improved with reduction in embedment length of reinforcing bar. 2) Untrauer and Henry's equation which describe bond strength of mortar as a function of its compressive strength and confining pressure, predicted the measured bond capacity of this test within the 5% limits.
