  • The potential shear strength of reinforced concrete beams decreases after flexural yielding due to the decrease of the effective compressive strength of concrete in plastic hinge zone. A truss model considering shear deterioration in the plastic hinge zone was proposed in order to evaluate the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams failing in shear after flexural yielding This model can determine the potential shear strength of the beam by using a truss model. The potential shear strength gradually decreases as the increase of the axial strain of member. When the calculated potential shear strength decreases up to the flexural yielding strength, the corresponding rotation angle is defined as the ductile capacity of the beam. The predicted ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams is shown to be in a good agreement with experimental results.

  • Shear test data have been extracted from previous experimental research and compiled into a database that may be the largest ever made. In this paper, the shear database (SDB) was used for evaluating shear design provisions for both reinforced concrete (RC) beams and prestressd concrete (PSC) beams. A discussion on the use of the results of this evaluation related to calibration and strength reduction factor for the shear design provisions was also provided. It was observed that the shear design provisions did not provide good predictions for RC members and gave very poor predictions especially for RC members without shear reinforcement. On the other hand, the limit on shear strength contributed by transverse reinforcement was observed to be lower than necessary. The shear design provisions gave very unconservative results for the large RC members (d>700mm) without shear reinforcement having light amount of longitudinal reinforcement $(\rho_w<1.0\%)$. However, for PSC members the shear design provisions gave a good estimation of ultimate shear strength with a reasonable margin of safety. Despite of a large difference of accuracy in prediction of shear strength for RC members and PSC members, the shear design provisions used a same shear strength reduction factor for these members. As a result, the shear design provisions did not provide a uniform factor of safety against shear failure for different types of members.

  • Longitudinal elongation develops in reinforced concrete beams that exhibit flexural yielding during cyclic loading. The longitudinal elongation can decrease the shear strength and deformation capacity of the beams. In the present study, nonlinear truss model analysis was performed to study the elongation mechanism of reinforced concrete beams. The results showed that residual tensile plastic strain of the longitudinal reinforcing bar in the plastic hinge is the primary factor causing the member elongation, and that the shear-force transfer mechanism of diagonal concrete struts has a substantial effect on the magnitude of the elongation. Based on the analysis results, a simplified method for evaluating member elongation was developed. The proposed method was applied to test specimens with various design parameters and loading conditions..

  • It is widely recognized that the strengths of reinforced concrete members have random characteristics due to the variability of the mechanical properties of concrete and steel, the dimensional error as well as incorrect placement of reinforcing bars. Statistical models of the variabilities of strengths of reinforced concrete members, therefore, need to be developed to evaluate the safety level implied in current practices. Based on the probabilistic models of basic factors affecting the R.C. member strengths, in this study, the probabilistic characteristics of member resistance have been studied through Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Coating is one of the methods used to solve the problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures. There are few research reported in the literature regarding the effect of zinc-coating on flexural behavior compared to epoxy coating. The objective of this study was to determine whether zinc-coated rebar adversely affects flexural behavior. Concrete beams reinforced with black or zinc-coated steel were tested in flexure. The test variables included the presence of rebar surface coating with zinc, steel ratio used and cover depth. The study concentrated on comparing crack pattern, crack width, deflection and strain. The ultimate flexural capacity of beams reinforced with zinc-coated bars was not different from that of black steel reinforced beams. The results from deflection and crack width measurements were indicative of no significant variation for the different rebar surface conditions. In addition, it was found that load-strain curve of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel was similar to that of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel. Therefore, the test results indicated that the use of zinc-coated rebar had no adverse effect on flexural behavior compared to the use of black rebar.

  • In the present study, the deformation capacity of slender shear walls with thin web was studied. As reported by other researchers, web-crushing and rebar-fracture, developing by inelastic deformation after flexural yielding, were considered as the governing failure modes of walls. To address the effect of the longitudinal elongation on web-crushing and rebar-fracture, the longitudinal elongation was predicted by using truss model analysis. The failure criteria by web-crushing and rebar-fracture were defined as a function of the longitudinal elongation. The proposed method was applied to 17 shear wall specimens with boundary columns, and the prediction results were compared with the test results. The results showed that proposed method predicted the maximum deformations and failure modes of the wall specimens with reasonable precision.

  • In this study, the size effect in flexural and shear behaviors of reinforced concrete beams with stirrup has been studied. The specimens of different size with same longitudinal reinforcement ratio are tested. The major variables of test include the size(relative depth) of the members as well as the longitudinal reinforcement ratios. The nominal resistances in flexure and shear are obtained for various sizes and steel ratios. It is found from the present study that the size effect is also very pronounced for the flexural resistance in reinforced concrete structures. The prediction formulas for the size effect of reinforced concrete beams in flexure and shear are proposed. The proposed equations agree relatively well with experimental data. The present study will provide useful bases for more accurate analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures.
