  • In the companion paper, nonlinear finite element analysis procedures are presented for the seismic damage evaluation of RC bridge piers. This paper defines a damage index based on the predicted hysteretic behavior of a RC bridge pier. Damage indices aim to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage in RC bridge piers sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method is applied to RC bridge piers tested by other, and compared to existing damage indices. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of damage throughout the loading cycles for several test specimens investigated.

  • In this study, nonlinear finite element analysis procedures are presented for the structural performance assessment of damaged reinforced concrete structures. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. This paper defines a damage index based on the predicted inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete structures. The proposed numerical method for the structural performance of damaged reinforced concrete structures is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • This paper proposed a nonlocal anisotropic damage model to simulate the behavior of plain and reinforced concrete structures that are predominantly tensile and compressive load. This model based on continuum damage mechanics, used a symmetric second-order tensor as the damage variable. For quasi-brittle materials, such as concrete, the damage patterns were different in tension and in compression. These two damage states were modeled by damage evolution laws ensuring a damage tensor rate proportional to the total strain tensor in terms of principal components. To investigate the effectiveness of proposed model, the double edge notched specimen experimented by nooru-mohamed and reinforced concrete bending beam were analyzed using the implementation of the proposed model. As the results for the simulation, the nonlocal anisotropic damage model with an adequate control of rupture correctly represented the crack propagation for mixed mode fracture. In the structural failure of reinforced concrete bending beam, the proposed model can be showed up to a very high damage level and yielding of the reinforcements.

  • This paper presents a hysteretic damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) joints that explicitly accounts for the bond-slip between the reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete. A frame element whose displacement fields for the concrete and the reinforcing bars are different to permit slip is developed. From the fiber section concept, compatibility equations for concrete, rebar, and bond are defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain curve of steel is conducted for partial unloading and reloading conditions. Local bond stress-slip relations for monotonic loads are updated at each slip reversal according to the damage factor. The numerical applications of the reinforcing bar embedded in the confined concrete block, the RC column anchored in the foundation, and the RC beam-column subassemblage validate the model accuracy and show how including the effects of bond-slip leads to a good assessment of the amount of energy dissipation during loading histories.

  • To analysis the effect of reinforcement ratio and impact velocity on local damage, a series of impact analyses are performed to predict local effects. According to these results, the reinforcement ratio has no effect on the penetration depth and perforation thickness, but notable change to the scabbing area were observed. The higher the missile velocity becomes, the greater the degree of local damage to the reinforced concrete slabs is. Analysis results will be useful in the impact-resistance design of containment buildings and structures.

  • One of the reasons for brittle failure in reinforced concrete structures subjected to severe earthquake is due to large local bond-slippage of bars resulting in fast bond degradation between reinforcing bars and concrete. This study aims to evaluate effects of bar deformation height on bond performance, specially, bond degradation under cyclic loading. Bond test specimens were constructed with machined bars with high relative rib areas. The degree of confinement by transverse bars is also another key parameters in this bond test. From test results, amounts of energy dissipation are calculated and compared for each parameter. Test results show that bond strength and stiffness drops significantly as cycles increases. The confinement and high relative rib area are effective to delay bond degradation, as the reduction of bond strength of cyclic loading compared to monotonic loading decreased for bars with large confinement and high relative rib areas. The energy dissipation also increases as the degree of confinement and relative rib area increases. However, tested bars with very high rib areas show that the bond may be damaged at relatively small slip because of high stiffness. The study will help to understand the bond degradation mechanism due to bar deformation height under cyclic loading and be useful to develop new deformed bars with high relative rib areas.
