  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the growth of Gyrophora esculanta and to establish a method of tissue culture of the plant. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The Gyrophora esculanta was found growing mostly on the rock slopes of 722 m to 1915 min elevation on mountains in Korea. 2. Trees growing in the vicinity of the G. esculanta were mainly Quercus spp., Pinus thunbergii, Acer spp. and Lespedeza spp, Especially Quercus spp. was found growing in all of the study site. 3. The average Length of the rock slopes with G. esculanta growing on was 14 m and their aspects were mostly south. 4. The G. esculanta were found growing on rocks of Crystalline Schist, Quartz, Liparite, Granite, ete. Particularly they were mostly found on granites. The gradient of the rock slopes was in the range of 22-90 degrees. 5. The mean number of individuals of G. esculanta per one rock slope ranged from 14 at Mt. Bukhan to 70 at Mt. Jrri. Their mean diameter ranged from 1.8cm at Mt. Munsu to 4.6cm at Mt, Sokri. 6. The average percentage of G. esculanta with fruit body was 17.6%. The highest value was found at Mt. Cheonhwang (24.0%). 7. When the 100 segments of rhizoid of Gyrophora esculanta cultured in Detmer's medium supplemented with kinetine 5mg/l and 2, 4-D 3mg/l, n callus of microspore origins were induced from about 20% of the segments. As the induced n callus was transplanted on the six different types of rocks, it was observed that the juvenile G. esculanta grew best on granite and the development rate of G. esculanta on the granite was about 55%.

  • The intent of this paper is to examine the talus in Chon-hwang-san in the southern part of Korean Peninsula, and then analyze its geomorphic feature and origin. The research is summarized as follows; (1) The talus is 220m long and the range of the width from 10 to 75m. The mean gradient is $33^{\circ}$ and the mean block size is $110{\times}59cm$(long axis$\times$short axis). The overall appearance of the talus is tongue-shaped and the geology of the constituent blocks is dacite. (2) This talus has two particular geomorphic landscapes. One is that the talus has not free face as source of blocks back of itself; the free face of the talus has been parallel retreated to disappearance by frost attack. The other is that the upper part of the talus is on the ridge. (3) This talus is classified into rock fall talus type, and the shape of rock fragments is angular. When considered in conjunction with face of being mentioned above, the morphology and lithology of the talus are best explained on the basis of origin under periglacial environment during late pleistocene time. (4) Most constituent rock debris are now lichen-covered, or covered with a mantle of weathering. There is no evidence of appreciable movement and for supplying block. Therefore, the talus appears to be relict or fossil form stage, currently.

Halla-san에 대한 미국의 NGA(National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency)의 지명정보 데이터베이스에서 검색한 결과는 아래와 같다.

  • The purpose of this reserch is to investigate the flora of Dumi Island. This island locates at $128^{\circ}$ 13' E. longitude and $34^{\circ}$ 41' N. latitude. As a result of our investigation, the distribution of plants on Dumi Island could be summarized as follows. The vascular plants through this investigation were 66 families, 121 genera, 127 species, 16 varieties, 2 forma, and 145 kinds. From 1945 to 1960, most Pinus densiflora and Quercus mongolica were cut and sent as fuel to the cities of Masan, Chungmu and Samchunpo. After these deforestation years, there was a change of policy in the area and then wood was substituted by coal blacks as fuel and along with this occurs reforestation. Because of the reforestation by the present administration and natural means of suctrees, Castamopsis cuspidata var. thunbergii, Camellia japonica and Machilus japonica; they were found to exist near Sheonangdang in the northern region at Hakli and at Kuchun in the south. In the central part of the island at Mt. Chunhwang there are slopes of 20-30 degrees which are cultivated by the islanders this mountain which can be cultivated and 65% or 830 islanders are farming this land. Although this 125.4 hectors is not a large portion, this mountain with its variety of growth at different elevations, seems to be very fertile causing thick growth at any level.

  • There are a few interesting areas which show freezing during summer season in Korea, three of them are especially important. They are located at Milyang(Gyungnam province), Uisung and Chungsong(Gyungbook province). They are named Eoleumgol(ice-valley) or Binghyul(ice-cave). The purpose of this study is to clarify geomorphological and geological characteristics about the distribution areas of freezing during summer season in Korea in relation to previous works, which have been studied in hydrological or micro-climatological viewpoints. The main results are summarized as follows. 1) The main geomorphological and geological characteristics in the distribution areas of freezing during summer season (1) Thick debris accumulated slope within deep valley (2) North facing slope (3) The component debris of volcanic rock such as andesite or rhyolite 2) The ice-cave as a system that give rise to freezing phenomenon in summer season is closely related to talus slope. The ice-cave has thick accumulated debris and lots of vacant spaces within the rock deposits, some of vacant spaces are very big and connected with underground water system. 3) A partly freezing within underground water system is required freezing phenomenon in summer season. Judging from this point of view, two ideas are suggested; one is the evaporation theory, another is that the frozen condition in winter remains untill late summer.
