He II RAMAN SCATTERED LINE BY NEUTRAL HYDROGEN IN THE BIPOLAR PLANETARY NEBULA M2-9 (나비형 행성상 성운 M2-9에서 He II의 중성 수소에 의한 라만 산란선)

  • In the spectrum of the young bipolar planetary nebula M2-9 obtained from the 1.5m telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, we detected the He II feature at 6545 $\AA$ that are proposed to be formed via Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen. However, in the same spectrum, the He II emission lines at 6527 $\AA$ and 6560 $\AA$ are absent, which implies that the He II emission region is hidden from our line of sight and that the H I scattering region is pretty much extended not to be obscured entirely. We performed photoionization computations to estimate the physical size of the He II emission line region to be $10^{16}cm$, from which the location and dimension of the obscuring circumstellar region are inferred and the temperature of the central star must exceed $10^5K$. The angular size of the circumstellar region responsible for the obscuration of the He II emission region is ~1" with the assumption of the distance 01 kpc to M2-9, which is consistent with the recent image of M2-9 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope.

  • We designed and developed a multi-purpose CCD camera system for three kinds of CCDs; KAF-0401E($768{\times}512$), KAF-1602E($1536{\times}1024$), KAF-3200E($2184{\times}1472$) made by KODAK Co.. The system supports fast USB port as well as parallel port for data I/O and control signal. The packing is based on two stage circuit boards for size reduction and contains built-in filter wheel. Basic hardware components include clock pattern circuit, A/D conversion circuit, CCD data flow control circuit, and CCD temperature control unit. The CCD temperature can be controlled with accuracy of approximately $0.4^{\circ}C$ in the max. range of temperature, ${\Delta}33^{\circ}C$. This CCD camera system has with readout noise $6\;e^-$, and system gain $5\;e^-/ADU$. A total of 10 CCD camera systems were produced and our tests show that all of them show passable performance.

  • New photometric and spectroscopic solutions of W-type overcontact binary V 417 Aql were obtained by solving the UBV light curves of Samec et al. (1997) and radial-velocity ones of Lu & Rucinski (1999) with the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney binary code. In the light curve synthesis the light of a third-body, which Qian (2003) proposed, was considered and obtained about 2.7%, 2.2%, and 0.4% for U, B, and V bandpasses, respectively. The model with third-light is better fitted to eclipse parts than that with no third-light. Absolute dimensions of V417 Aql are determined from our solution as $M_1$= 0.53 $M_{*}$, $M_2$= 1.45 $M_{*}$, $R_1$= 0.84 $R_{*}$, and $R_2$= 1.31 $M_{*}$, and the distance to it is deduced as about 216pc. Our distance is well consistent with that (204pc) derived from Rucinski & Duerbeck's (1997) relation, $M_{v}$ = $M_{v}$(log P, B-V), but is more distant than that (131$\pm$40pc) determined by the Hipparcos trigonometric parallax. The difference may result from the relatively large error of Hipparcos parallax for V 417 Aql.l.

  • In this paper, we propose the effective bit expansion of FFT module for improving the accuracy of correlation result of the Daejeon correlator. The Daejeon correlator based on FPGA was implemented in order to fast data processing with the fixed-point of FFT operation. In correlation result, however, the phenomenon of phase concentration to 0 degree was appeared in lower frequency area of bandwidth due to lack of operational bit. This phenomenon has an affect on the accuracy of correlation result by introducing the effect of data loss because of excluding phase concentration during analysis of observed radio source. In order to improving the accuracy of correlation result we carried out the simulation by expanding bit-number than 16-bit operation of previous FFT module within given resource limits of FPGA. Through the simulation results, the effective bit number for FFT module within used FPGA resource limits is able to expand, and we confirmed that the operational 20-bit of FFT module is effective for improving accuracy of correlation result by comparing with experimental result.

The Development and Application of an Astronomy Education Program Reflecting Astronomical Thinking: A Case of Planetarium Class at Science Museum (천문학적 사고를 반영한 천문교육 프로그램의 개발 및 적용: 과학관 천체 투영관 수업 사례)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an astronomy education program reflecting astronomical thinking to be used at science museum and to investigate the effect of the program on the improvement of astronomical thinking ability of high school students. After selecting the components of astronomical thinking through literature studies, we developed an astronomy education program consisting of four stages: demonstration and observation, and question and thinking, support and group discussion, demonstration and assessment. In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, we conducted a covariance analysis on the pre- and post-tests of the experimental group and control group to examine the level of students' thinking before and after using the program in teaching and learning. As a result, it was confirmed that the astronomy education program reflecting astronomical thinking was effective in promoting students' astronomical thinking ability. In particular, this program was effective in enhancing the ability of modeling by reconstructing the observed astronomical phenomenon from the viewpoint of the universe with respect to spatial thinking in the astronomy domain. It was also effective to improve the ability of organizing the system by grasping the relationship between the elements constituting the astronomical system in relation to the system thinking in the astronomy domain. This study is significant in suggesting a specific teaching and learning program to develop students' astronomical thinking.

A Comparative Analysis of Keywords in Astronomical Journals and Concepts in Secondary School Astronomy Curriculum (최근 천문학 연구 키워드와 천체 분야 교육과정 내용 요소 비교 분석)

  • In recent years, astronomy has been snowballing: including Higgs particle discovery, black hole imaging, extraterrestrial exploration, and deep space observation. Students are also largely interested in astronomy. The purpose of this study is to discover what needs to be improved in the current astronomy curriculum in light of recent scientists' researches and discoveries. We collected keywords from all papers published from 2011 to 2020 in four selected journals-ApJ, ApJL, A&A, and MNRAS- by R package to examine research trends. The curriculum contents were extracted by synthesizing the in-service teachers' coding results in the 2015 revised curriculum document of six subjects (Science, Integrated Science, Earth Science I, Earth Science II, Physics II, Convergence Science). The research results are as follows: first, keywords that appear steadily in astronomy are 'galaxies: formation, galaxy: active, star: formation, accretion, method: numerical.' Second, astronomy curriculum includes all areas except the 'High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena' area within the common science curriculum learned by all students. Third, it is necessary to review the placement of content elements by subject and grade and to consider introducing new concepts based on astronomy research keywords. This is an exploratory study to compare curriculum and the field of scientific research that forms the basis of the subject. We expect to provide implications for a future revision of the astronomy curriculum as a primary ground investigation.

Analysis of Research in Earth Science at the Science Fair Using the Semantic Network Analysis: Focus on the Last 21 Years (2000-2020) (언어네트워크를 이용한 과학전람회 지구과학 부문 탐구주제 분석: 최근 21년(2000-2020년)을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the field of Earth science at a science fair. For this purpose, 566 pieces of data spanning 21 years (2000 to 2020), acquired from entries in the Earth Science section on the science fair website, were analyzed using the semantic network method. As a result, geoscience topics have been actively explored in works submitted for the Earth Science section of the science fair. Fossils from the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Era were particularly predominant. Together with these, keywords corresponding to astronomy, space science, and atmospheric science formed a small-scale network. Astronomy and space science mainly dealt with the dynamic characteristics of asteroids, Venus, and Jupiter. Other subjects included the solar system, sunspots, and lunar phases. Atmospheric science has focused on atmospheric physics, atmospheric observation and analysis technology, atmospheric dynamics, air quality monitoring, while marine science has been limited to physical oceanography and geologic oceanography. This study, is expected to help select Earth Science topics and conduct inquiry activities in schools.
