  • Changes in water depth caused by underwater earthquakes and landslides cause sea surface undulations, which in turn propagate to the coast and result in significant damage as wave heights normally increase due to the wave shoaling process. Various types of numerical models have been developed to simulate the generation and propagation of tsunami waves. Most of tsunami models determine the initial surface of the water based on the assumption that the movement of the seabed is immediately and identically transmitted to the sea surface. However, this approach does not take into account the characteristics of underwater earthquakes that occur with time history and spatial variation. Thus, such an incomplete description on the initial generation of tsunami waves is totally reflected in the error during the simulation. In this study, the analytical solution proposed by Hammack (1973) was applied in the tsunami model in order to simulate the generation of initial water surface elevation by the change of water depth with time history and its propagation. The developed solution is expected to identify the relationship among various type of seabed motions, initial surface undulations, and wave speeds of elevated water surfaces.

  • Breaking waves generated by wave shoaling in coastal areas have a close relationship with various physical phenomena in coastal regions, such as sediment transport, longshore currents, and shock wave pressure. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately predict breaker index such as breaking wave height and breaking depth, when designing coastal structures. Numerous scientific efforts have been made in the past by many researchers to identify and predict the breaking phenomenon. Representative studies on wave breaking provide many empirical formulas for the prediction of breaking index, mainly through hydraulic model experiments. However, the existing empirical formulas for breaking index determine the coefficients of the assumed equation through statistical analysis of data under the assumption of a specific equation. In this paper, we applied a representative linear-based supervised machine learning algorithms that show high predictive performance in various research fields related to regression or classification problems. Based on the used machine learning methods, a model for prediction of the breaking index is developed from previously published experimental data on the breaking wave, and a new linear equation for prediction of breaker index is presented from the trained model. The newly proposed breaker index formula showed similar predictive performance compared to the existing empirical formula, although it was a simple linear equation.

  • This study is based on 'Sangkwan' in 'Jeokcheonsucheonmi' among Myeongri classical theory as a guideline, and is a consideration research on past 'Sangkwan' in the rest of Myeongri classical theory. The first words about 'Sangkwan' in the original text is that the interpretation is very difficult when Sangkwan looks at 'Jeongkwan'. When we say 'Jeongkwan', it contains the interpretation on the person who should take on the heavy responsibility of the state in the monarchy, and there is a concern about how it can be easily interpreted by neglecting it because 'Sangkwan' have a bad effect on 'Jeongkwan'. Unlike modern times, in the past, there was no other way but to become government officials to be successful socially and accumulate wealth. There should be big difference in standard of fortune and success in an era where success conditions and opportunities were difficult to be given. That is, it was though in the past that 'Sangkwan' which has a bad influence on 'Jeongkwan' have a detrimental effect awfully. However, in today's scientific society, the use of 'Sangkwan' which has a bad influence on 'Jeongkwan' has come to light in a wide variety of places. Therefore, this study is to lay a foundation for the expansion of reinterpretation and utilization methods suitable for the times through the consideration of classical 'Sangkwan'.

  • The Geochang Au-Ag deposit is located within the Yeongnam Massif. Within the area a number of hydrothermal quartz and calcite veins were formed by narrow open-space filling of parallel and subparallel fractures in the granitic gneiss and/or gneissic granite. Mineral paragenesis can be divided into two stages (stage I, ore-bearing quartz vein; stage II, barren calcite vein) by major tectonic fracturing. Stage I, at which the precipitation of major ore minerals occurred, is further divided into three substages (early, middle and late) with paragenetic time based on minor fractures and discernible mineral assemblages: early, marked by deposition of pyrite with minor pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite; middle, characterized by introduction of electrum and base-metal sulfides with minor sulfosalts; late, marked by hematite with base-metal sulfides. Fluid inclusion data show that stage I ore mineralization was deposited between initial high temperatures (≥380℃ ) and later lower temperatures (≤210℃ ) from H2O-CO2-NaCl fluids with salinities between 7.0 to 0.7 equiv. wt. % NaCl of Geochang hydrothermal system. The relationship between salinity and homogenization temperature indicates a complex history of boiling, fluid unmixing (CO2 effervescence), cooling and dilution via influx of cooler, more dilute meteoric waters over the temperature range ≥380℃ to ≤210℃. Changes in stage I vein mineralogy reflect decreasing temperature and fugacity of sulfur by evolution of the Geochang hydrothermal system with increasing paragenetic time. The Geochang deposit may represents a mesothermal gold-silver deposit.

  • In general, the upstream dam changes downstream flow regime dramatically, i.e., from natural flow regime to hydropeaking flows. This study investigates the impact of the natural flow pattern on downstream fish habitat in a regulated river in Korea using the physical habitat simulation. The study area is a 13.4 km long reach of the Geum-gang River, located downstream from the Yongdam Dam, Korea. A field monitoring revealed that three fish species are dominant, namely Zacco platypus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, and Opsariichthys bidens, and they account for 70% of the total fish community. Specially, Opsariichthys bidens is an indigenous species in the Geum-gang River. The three fish species are selected as target fish species for the physical habitat simulation. The Nays2D model, a 2D shallow water equation solver, and the HSI (Habitat Suitability Index) model are used for hydraulic and habitat simulations, respectively. To assess the impact of the natural flow pattern, this study uses the annual natural flow regime and hydropeaking flows from the dam. It is found that the natural flow regime increases significantly the Composite Suitability Index (CSI) in the study reach. Then, using the Building Block Approach (BBA), the scenarios for the modifying dam operations are presented in the study reach. Both Scenario 1 and scenario 2 are proposed by using the hydrological method considering both magnitude and duration of the inflow and averaging the inflow over each month, respectively. It is revealed that the natural flow regime embodied in scenario 1 and scenario 2 increases the Weighted Usable Area (WUA) significantly, compared to the hydropeaking flows. In conclusion, the modifying the dam operations by restoring to the natural flow pattern is advantageous to fish community.

  • The Dongwon Au-Ag deposit is located within the Paleozoic Taebaeksan province, Okcheon belt. Mineral paragenesis can be divided into two stages (stage I, ore-bearing quartz veins; stage II, barren carbonate veins) by major tectonic fracturing. Stage I, at which the precipitation of major ore minerals occurred, is further divided into three substages(early, middle and late) with paragenetic time based on minor fractures and discernible mineral assemblages: early, marked by deposition of pyrite with minor magnetite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite; middle, characterized by introduction of electrum and base-metal sulfides with minor sulfosalts; late, marked by argentite, Cu-As (and/or Sb) and Ag-Sb sulfosalts with base-metal sulfides. Fluid inclusion data show that stage I ore mineralization was deposited between initial high temperatures (≥430℃) and later lower temperatures (≤230℃) from fluids with salinities between 6.0 to 0.4 wt. percent equiv. NaCl. The relationship of salinity and homogenization temperature suggest that ore mineralization at Dongwon was deposited mainly due to fluid boiling, cooling and dilution via influx of cooler, more dilute meteoric waters. Changes in stage I vein mineralogy reflect decreasing temperature and fugacity of sulfur by evolution of the Dongwon hydrothermal system with increasing paragenetic time. The Dongwon deposit may represents a Korean-type and/or Au-Ag type mesothermal/epithermal gold-silver deposit.

  • The habitat degradation caused by large-scale reclamation leads to devastating impacts, such as fine sediment and mud shrimp Upogebia major settlement on Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum aquaculture in the eastern Cheonsu Bay tidal flats, Republic of Korea. Despite these impacts, there is a lack of studies on the influence of fine sediments on tidal flats that constitute key mud shrimp habitats. This study provides information on the seawater-sediment environment and the influence of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) fluctuations depending on mud shrimp burrow hole density. Additionally, it discusses countermeasures for Manila clam habitat management. The results show that mean DIN effluxes in areas with a high-density of burrow holes were up to 4 times (0.12 mmol m-2 d-1) higher than those in sites of low-density (0.03 mmol m-2 d-1) within the Saho and Songhak-ri tidal flats. To manage interference within the competition zone of Songhak-ri tidal flat, it is important to utilize the settlements of spawning season in all three dimensions. Consequently, additional studies in other tidal flats are essential and research in zones where mud shrimps and juvenile clams coexist will help to determine the priorities in the efficient management of clam aquaculture.

  • Leaf burning due to nitrofenapplication was characterized as brown color spot appearing on the leaf sheath and blade. The spots predominantly appeared around 5-7 cm high above soil surface regardless of different particle size, formulation, application method, or water level. Magnitude and frequency of burn spots increased somewhat as the granular size gets finer, by higher water level, or in transplanted rice compared to directly sown rice when applied at 7 leaf-stage, but there was no indication of increase in leaf burning due to clinging of floating dust to rice plant. When collections from local distributor's stock of TOK 7G, a granular formulation of nitrofen, were analyzed for particle size composition, 98.9% by weight ranged between 9 to 35 meshes, and only about 0.08% by weight was of particles finer than 100 mesh.

  • The experimental data obtained in a wave flume were analyzed using machine learning techniques to establish a model that predicts the input wave height of the wavemaker based on the waves that have experienced wave shoaling and to verify the performance of the established model. For this purpose, artificial neural network (NN), the most representative machine learning technique, and Gaussian process regression (GPR), one of the non-parametric regression analysis methods, were applied respectively. Then, the predictive performance of the two models was compared. The analysis was performed independently for the case of using all the data at once and for the case by classifying the data with a criterion related to the occurrence of wave breaking. When the data were not classified, the error between the input wave height at the wavemaker and the measured value was relatively large for both the NN and GPR models. On the other hand, if the data were divided into non-breaking and breaking conditions, the accuracy of predicting the input wave height was greatly improved. Among the two models, the overall performance of the GPR model was better than that of the NN model.

  • As climate change increasesthe frequency and risk of flooding in major cities around theworld, the importance ofsimulation technology that can quickly and accurately analyze high-resolution 2D flooding information in large-scale areasis emerging. The physically-based approaches based on the Shallow Water Equations (SWE) often requires huge computer resources hindering high-resolution flood prediction. This study investigated the theoretical background of Weighted Cellular Automata 2D (WCA2D), which simulates spatio-temporal changes offlooding using transition rules and weight-based system, and assessed feasibility to simulate pluvial flooding in the urbancatchment, theOncheon-cheon catchmentinBusan, SouthKorea.Inaddition, the computation performancewas compared by applying versions using OpenComputing Language (OpenCL) andOpenMulti-Processing (OpenMP) parallel computing techniques. Simulationresultsshowed that the maximuminundation depthmap by theWCA2Dmodel cansimilarly reproduce historical inundation maps. Also, it can precisely simulate spatio-temporal changes of flooding extent in the urban catchment with complex topographic characteristics. For computation efficiency, parallel computing schemes, theOpenCLandOpenMP, improved the computation by about 8~14 and 5~6 folds respectively, compared to the sequential computation.
