  • Red Tide phenomenon which happens in the southern coast of Korea gives massive damage to the fishermen who run fish farms and thereby a lot of efforts to prevent damage are made from various angles. In particular, red tide monitoring with satellite imagery can make it possible to obtain the occurrence data of red tide throughout the whole areas of the sea, which helps provide important information for establishing the preventive plans of disasters. In this regard, this study selected the South Sea of Gyeongnam Province with a view to suggesting the monitoring results with regard to the spread and reduction of the Red Tide in the middle of the day by using the GOCI Images of COMS. With this intention, it selected the region in the South Sea of Gyeongnam Province. The study results of analysis on the GOCI image data for the years of 2013(Aug. 12) and 2014 (Sep. 11) are as follows: the pattern of the Red Tide in the region of the South Sea occurred in the southern sea area of Geoje-do in the morning. It gradually spread and showed a gradual decline after reaching the top at 1 PM. In addition, in terms of the tide movement in the middle of the day, Red Tide began in the southern sea area and moved to the west, and moved to the east again at noon. It is judged that additional study on many factors such as the characteristics of the future Red-tide organisms, tidal currents, amount of sunshine, and water temperature is needed, but it is estimated that Red Tide movement monitoring with GOCI images would provide very crucial information for predicting the spread and movement of the Red Tide to protect and manage the Red Tide disasters.

  • Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) was launched in 2010 with three payloads that include Ka-band communication payload developed by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). This study introduces a real-time remote vessel monitoring system built in the Socheongcho Ocean Research Station using the Ka-band communication satellite. The system is composed of three steps; real-time data collection, transmission, and processing/visualization. We describe hardware (H/W) and software systems (S/W) installed to perform each step and the whole procedure that made the raw data become vessel information for a real-time ocean surveillance. In addition, we address functional requirements of H/W and S/W and the important considerations for successful operation of the system. The system is now successfully providing, in near real-time, ship information over a VHF range using AIS data collected in the station. The system is expected to support a rapid and effective surveillance over a huge oceanic area. We hope that the concept of the system can be fully used for real-time maritime surveillance using communication satellite in future.

  • This paper describes a multi-scale user interaction based tiled display visualization system using multiple input devices for monitoring and analyzing Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) observation satellite imagery. This system provides multi-touch screen, Kinect motion sensing, and moblie interface for multiple users to control the satellite imagery either in front of the tiled display screen or far away from a distance to view marine environmental or climate changes around Korean peninsular more effectively. Due to a large amount of memory required for loading high-resolution GOCI satellite images, we employed the multi-level image load technique where the image was divided into small tiled images in order to reduce the load on the system and to be operated smoothly by user manipulation. This system performs the abstraction of common input information from multi-user Kinect motion and gestures, multi-touch points and mobile interaction information to enable a variety of user interactions for any tiled display application. In addition, the unit of time corresponding to the selected date of the satellite images are sequentially displayed on the screen and multiple users can zoom-in/out, move the imagery and select buttons to trigger functions.

  • This study analyzes the early satellite mission marine fog detection results from Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II). We investigate optical characteristics of the GOCI-II spectral bands for marine fog between October 2020 and March 2021 during the overlapping mission period of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and GOCI-II. For Rayleigh-corrected reflection (Rrc) at 412 nm band available for the input of the GOCI-II marine fog algorithm, the inter-comparison between GOCI and GOCI-II data showed a small Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value (0.01) with a high correlation coefficient (0.988). Another input variable, Normalized Localization Standard (NLSD), also shows a reasonable correlation (0.798) between the GOCI and GOCI-II data with a small RMSE value (0.007). We also found distinctive optical characteristics between marine fog and clouds by the GOCI-II observations, showing the narrower distribution of all bands' Rrc values centered at high values for cloud compared to marine fog. The GOCI-II marine fog detection distribution for actual cases is similar to the GOCI but more detailed due to the improved spatial resolution from 500 m to 250 m. The validation with the automated synoptic observing system (ASOS) visibility data confirms the initial reliability of the GOCI-II marine fog detection. Also, it is expected to improve the performance of the GOCI-II marine fog detection algorithm by adding sufficient samples to verify stable performance, improving the post-processing process by replacing real-time available cloud input data and reducing false alarm by adding aerosol information.

  • The area of red tides occurences, which brings enormous damages every year, have been expanded to the coastal waters across the nation. Regarding to this trend, the development of red tide detection technology by using the GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) of COMS lauched in 2010 has been drawn attentions of researchers. This study purposed on analyzing the frequency and density of red tides occurence by using the GOCI for detecting the southern sea, whereas targeted area. The observation has brought over the last three years (2012, 2013, and 2014) before the analysis was conducted. Followingly, the study could be resulted in extracting and revealing the hot spots of the red tides from two of analysis in the overlay and density. The distribution patterns of red tide occurrences according to those observed years has been shown in irregular characteristics and various changes. However, the analysis of hot spots, based on the frequency of the red tide occurrence, has revealed that the frequency of red tide occurences is continuously increased in the specific sea area. Therefore, it is concluded in that the continuous monitoring can contribute to predict accurate movements of red tides, so as establish systematic plans for preventing disasters.

  • Solar insolation is essential to understand the interaction between the earth and solar system, and it is a significant parameter that is utilized in various research fields including earth science, agriculture, and energy engineering. Although solar insolation is broadly measured in the ground-based observation station, it is difficult to identify the spatial distribution of solar insolation accurately. The remote sensing approach is known to have several benefits because it can provide continuous data sets for large area. In this study, we conducted the validation of solar insolation from COMS in the South Korea by comparing with flux tower observation. The results showed that the correlations between COMS and observation were high in both 30 minutes interval data and daily average data. Thus, we can identify that COMS can provide a reasonable estimate of solar insolation.
