  • Solutions of geotechnical engineering problems require calculation of deformation and stresses during various stages of loading. Powerful numerical methods are available to make such calculation even for complicated problems. To get accurate results, realistic stress-strain relationships of soil are dependent on a number of factors such as soil type, density, stress level and stress path. Attempts are continuously being made to develope analytical models for soils incorporating all such factors. The nature of stress-path dependency, the principle that governs deformations in sand, and the use of Lade's single work-hardening model for predicting sand response for a variety of stress-paths have been investigated and are examined. The test results and the analyses presented show that under some conditions sand exhibits stress-path dependent behavior. The strains calculated from Lade's single work-hardening model are in reasonable agreement with those measured, but some discrepancies occur. The largest difference between measured and calculated strains occurs for proportional loading with increasing stresses and for stress-path directions.

  • The final consolidation settlement is important factor in soft ground improvement because of settlement management and completion time. The compression index, which is slope of primary consolidation curve, is commonly used for the calculation of final consolidation settlement in clay layer. The existing final consolidation settlement is calculated in total consolidation layer that is assumed as one layer. This paper describes analysis result of the acquired settlement, when the consolidation layer is divided as several layer. The consolidation settlement increased according to increase of the divided layer and then it is converged. This result was unrelated to surcharge load. The division effect of layer is very high when the surcharge load is less than the consolidation layer thickness. The division effect of layer is 1.2 to 1.4 in the general surcharge load, and this value can be apply as safety factor in the calculation of final consolidation settlement.

  • This paper presents the results of full-scale structural measurements of 4,800 unit pure car carriers "HYUNDAI NO.103" and "HYUNDAI NO.105" on one voyage respectively for each ship, especially in order to investigate the local strength of partial bulkhead above free-board deck. With the measured data, the short-term frequency analyses have been performed. The results show that the wave-induced stresses follow, on the whole, well the Rayleigh distribution. In addition, it has been found from the measured data that transverse local stresses at bulkhead section have a very close relation with the acceleration in athwartship direction. Finally, the long-term analysis has been attempted by using the following two statistical distributions mainly in order to estimate the maximum stress amplitude at the corners of partial bulkhead. 1) Exponential distribution of cycles of stress amplitude 2) Double exponential distribution of extreme values of stress amplitude for each short-term analysis The results of these two cases show a good agreement with each other. For example, the estimated maximum stress amplitude for 10 years at port-side corner of Fr. 132 partial bulkhead is $2125kg/cm^2$ for the first case and $2170kg/cm^2$ for the second case just based on the measured data.
