Fuel cells have attracted enormous interest as new power sources because the cells can be used to solve the problem of environmental pollution as well as the natural-resource exhaustion problem. In this study, hydrogen-gas flow in microchannels of different shapes was numerically analyzed to improve the efficiency of a microfuel cell. Flow characteristics in six microchannels of different shapes but under identical boundary conditions were simulated. The analysis result shows that the flow characteristics such as velocity, uniformity, and flow rate, greatly depend upon the channel shape. This implies that the efficiency of microfuel cell can be expected to be increased by adopting the optimal configuration of channel shape for hydrogen-gas flow. The experimental results show that power density of a PEMFC with a microflow channel is higher than that of a PEMFC without a microflow channel; however, a durable catalyst is required in MEA.

The performance of microchannel PCHE (Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger) is superior to that of other existing commercial heat exchangers. Further, it is also more efficient than other heat exchangers. Various microchannels, whose shapes are straight (I), Wavy, Beehive, Surf, I-Wavy, I-Beehive, or I-Surf, are computationally modeled in this study. The counter-flow arrangement is used, and the flow characteristics, heat transfer, and pressure drop in the microchannels under various mass flow rate conditions are investigated. The results for I microchannel is chosen as the benchmarks and is compared with those of newly proposed microchannels. It is found that the surf-shaped microchannel is most efficient in improving the overall performance of a PCHE.

A regeneratively-cooled channel in a liquid rocket engine is used to effectively cool a combustion chamber inner wall from hot combustion gas, and the heat transfer/pressure loss characteristics should be predicted in advance to design cooling channels. In the present research, five cooling channels with different geometric dimensions were designed and the channels were respectively manufactured using cutter and endmill. By changing coolant velocity and downstream pressure, the effects of manufacturing method, channel shape, and flow condition on pressure losses were experimentally investigated and the results were compared with the analytical results. At same channel shape and flow condition, the pressure loss in the channel machined by the cutter was lower than that by the endmill. It was also found that the pressure loss ratio between the experimental result and the analytical data changed with the channel shape and flow condition.
A fabrication method fur high-aspect-ratio microchannels in stainless steel using laser-assisted thermochemical wet etching is reported in this paper. The fabrication of deep microchannels with an aspect ratio over ten is realized by applying a multiple etching process with an optimization of process conditions. The cross-sectional profile of the microchannels can be adjusted between rectangular and triangular shapes by properly controlling laser power and etchant concentration. Excellent dimensional uniformity is achieved among the channels with little heat-affected area. Microchannels with a width ranging from 15 to $50{\mu}m$ can be fabricated with an aspect ratio of ten and a pitch of 150 m or smaller. The effects of process variables such as laser power, scan speed, and etchant concentration on the fabrication results, including etch width, depth, and cross-sectional profile are closely examined.

New materials and shapes for a humidifying element were developed which outperformed the widely used crisscross glass wool Glasdek media design. The new material consists of 50% cellulose and 50% PET. The parallel channel configuration was devised to reduce excessive pressure loss caused by the reduced height (from 7.0 mm to 5.0 mm) of the crisscross configuration. For the same crisscross configuration, the humidification efficiency of the cellulose/PET element was 26% higher than that of the glass wool element. For the same cellulose/PET material, humidification efficiency of the parallel channel configuration was 14% higher than that of the crisscross configuration. As for the pressure drops, the cellulose/PET element was 2-52% higher than those of the glass wool element. For the same cellulose/PET material, the pressure drop of the parallel channel configuration was 14% higher than that of the crisscross configuration. Data were compared against the predictions from existing correlations and those by the proposed model.

Two-dimensional laminar numerical analyses were carried out for investigating the thermo-hydraulic characteristics of wavy channels with different shape parameters ($0.5{\leq}{\in}{\leq}1.5$, $0.1{\leq}{\gamma}{\leq}0.4$). PAO (polyalphaolefin), which is used for electronics cooling, is considered as the working fluid. In addition, constant properties, periodically developed flow, and uniform channel wall temperature conditions are assumed. Streamline and temperature fields, isothermal Fanning friction factors, and Colburn factors are presented for different Reynolds numbers in the laminar region ($1{\leq}Re{\leq}1000$). The results show that heat transfer is enhanced when the channel corrugation ratio (${\gamma}$) is large and channel spacing ratio (${\in}$) is small in the low Reynolds number region (Re < 50) and when ${\in}$ and ${\gamma}$ are large in the high Reynolds number region ($Re{\geq}50$).
This experimental study was performed to investigate internal flow and unsteady flow characteristics using a model for actual shape of a plate heat exchanger and visualization of flow through the particle image velocimetry. Seven Reynolds numbers were selected by calculation with the height of grooved channel and sectional mean velocity of inlet flow in the experiment, and instantaneous velocity distributions and flow characteristics were experimently investigated. The triangular grooved channel had a compound flow consisting of the flow in lower channel and the groove flow receiving shear stress by the channel flow in the experiment. The sheared mixing layer, in the boundary between the triangular groove and the channel, affected main flow to raise turbulent in the channel.

In this paper, the stability of cantilever composite laminated structures with open channel section is studied. This paper deals with the buckling behavior under the variation of the geometrical shape (length ratio, crank angle in the open channel section), the fiber reinforced angle, and so on in order to offer a effective and reliable design data. Also, sensitive analyses are carried out on the stability by the interaction of design factors. Based on this fact, the proper channel section and lamination scheme of composite material cantilever structures are considered in the engineering aspect.
