  • Two kinds of anticaking agents (dextrin, polydextrose) were combined with kiwifruit paste at 5% w/w ratio and freeze-dried to prepare a powdered material. The physiochemical characteristics of kiwifruit powders with anticaking agents were compared with those without anticaking agents as the control. The yield was higher in the powders with anticaking agents than the control. Moisture content, acidity, and total phenolics were lower in the powders with anticaking agents than the control. The contents of vitamin C was higher in the powders with anticaking agents than the control, but was no significant difference with different anticaking agent types. There were no significant differences in free sugar content (fructose, glucose, total sugar) and organic acid content (oxalic acid, lactic acid, total) depending on the anticaking agent types. Hunter's L-value was significantly high in the order of the samples with dextrin, the control, and polydextrose, while a-value showed an opposite tendency. Browning index, water solubility, and swelling power didn't show any significant difference. However, the hygroscopicities with elapsed time were lower in the powders with anticaking agents than the control. Therefore, the kiwifruit powder combined with dextrin or polydextrose as an anticaking agent at 5% w/w ratio could be used as a food biomaterial with a good quality in moisture, vitamim C, color value, browning index, water solubility, and hygroscopicity.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of the artificial pollination on fruit set, seed formation and fruit quality in kiwifruit and to confirm the effective pollination time for optimal fruit set in the shelter greenhouse cultivation. Also, the effect of artificial pollination practice by the pollen diluent solution was tested. By artificial pollination, fruit set, seed formation, and fruit quality was improved both in the open field condition and in the shelter greenhouse cultivation. In order to find the effective pollination period (EPP), artificial pollination was carried out every day until 7 days after full bloom. Number of seeds and fruit set rate and fruit growth of kiwifruit were no significantly different until 4 days after full bloom (DAFB), but, those of kiwifruit from 5 DAFB significantly decreased. Consequently, the effective pollination period of kiwifruit in the shelter greenhouse was 4 days after full bloom. Also, artificial pollination by the pollen diluent solution was showed the similar fruit set and fruit quality compare to that by lycopodium powder. Accordingly, artificial pollination by the pollen diluent solution should be very effective practice for labor saving in kiwifruit cultivation.

  • We estimated the averaged maximum incidences of bacterial canker at suitable sites for kiwifruit cultivation in 2020s and 2050s using D-PSA-K model with RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios. Though there was a little difference between the estimation using RCP4.5 and that using RCP8.5, the estimated maximum disease incidences were more than 75% at all the suitable sites in Korea except for some southern coastal areas and Jeju island under the assumption that there are a plenty of infections to cause the symptoms. We also analyzed the intermediate and final outputs of D-PSA-K model to find out the trends on the change in disease incidence affected by climate change. Whereas increase of damage to kiwifruit canes in a non-frozen environment caused by bacterial canker was estimated at almost all the suitable sites in both the climate change scenarios, rate of necrosis increase caused by the bacterial canker pathogen in a frozen environment during the last overwintering season was predicted to be reduced at almost all the suitable sites in both the climate change scenarios. Directions of change in estimated maximum incidence varied with sites and scenarios. Whereas the maximum disease incidence at 3.14% of suitable sites for kiwifruit cultivation in 2020s under RCP4.5 scenario was estimated to increase by 10% or more in 2050s, the maximum disease incidence at 25.41% of the suitable sites under RCP8.5 scenario was estimated so.

  • This study was conducted to determine the characteristics and utilization of pruned kiwifruit branches as wreath materials. Amount of pruned branches produced from one 11~15 year-old kiwi plant cv. 'Hayward' can be used for one wreath with 76cm in diameter. Making a wreath with 76cm in diameter with the pruned kiwifruit branches required 75 branches with 31~40cm length. And the cost to make a wreath with 76cm in diameter for the Keaki and the paper bush were cheeper than those of winged spindle tree and Korean dogwood. Floral designers evaluated that the glossy, the delicacy and the unique form of cut branches, and their various hue were lower than that of the commonly-used cut branches, however, the beauty of curved line, the characteristics after drying, and the utilization and prospect of pruned kiwi branches were higher by 'over good' than that of the commonly-used branches. Consequently, it was assumed that the utilization of pruned kiwifruit branches can be contributed to the improvement of side income for a farm household, and the diversity wreath materials.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the infestation and distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes on kiwi orchards in Korea. Plant parasitic nematodes genus and densities were investigated at a total of 102 sites in Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeju-do, which are the main production areas of domestic kiwi orchards. Plant parasitic nematodes detected were of 9 genera, including root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), spiral nematodes (Helicotylenchus spp.), and needle nematodes (Paratylenchus spp.), and 56% of the 102 plantations were infected with root-knot nematodes. Root-knot nematodes were found to be the most important plant parasitic nematode in domestic kiwi orchards. The average density of root-knot nematodes is 97 per 300 cm3 soil, and there is concern about the kiwi yield reduction. As a result of identifying the root-knot nematode species: M. arenaria, M. hapla, M. incognita, and M. javanica. Among them, M. arenaria is the most dominant. As the plant parasitic nematode infection route in fruit trees is often spread through the transplantation of infected seedlings, attention should be paid to the production of nematode-free plants during the production and supply of kiwifruit plants.

  • This study was designed to investigate quality characteristics and conditions of acetic acid fermentation of kiwi vinegar following addition of oligosaccharide. During the acid fermentation alcohol concentration and total acidity were shown to be 6% and 1.0%, respectively, with the highest acetic acid yield. Acetic acid fermentation of kiwi following addition of oligosaccharide showed the highest acetic acid yield with 15% oligosaccharide. Free forms of sugars in kiwi vinegar were detected to be fructose, glucose and maltose. Organic acid of kiwi vinegar were malic, lactic, acetic, citric and succinic acid. Total content of organic acid was shown to be the highest with 15% oligosaccharide. Mineral content was shown to be lower when oligosaccharide amount was increased. In conclusion, oligosaccharide addition has an insignificant effect on acetic acid fermentation of kiwi, and was evaluated to be suitable at 15%.

  • Fungicides of tebuconazole wp, iprodione wp and flusilazole wp were applied for the control of postharvest fruit rots of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) in the field in 2000 and 2001. More than 3 consecutive applications of these fungicides from the late June with 10-day-interval successfully controlled the diseases. It was found in the field trial in 2002 that 4 consecutive spays from mid of June with 10-day-interval was found to be the most effective application program for tebuconazole wp, iprodione wp and flusilazole wp, The results suggested that currently registered fungicides of benomyl wp and thiophanate-methyl wp can be substituted by tebuconazole wp, iprodione wp and flusilazole wp for the control of the diseases in Korea. Use of these fungicides can restrain emergence of fungicide resistant strains of postharvest fruit rot pathogens with benefit of reduced application of chemicals for food safety and environmental conservation.

  • To investigate the effects of storage and pasteurization temperature on the quality of kiwi juice $(13.5^{\circ}Brix)$, the Kiwi juice was pasteurized at 65, 75 and $85^{\circ}C$ for 15 sec. The microbial, physicochemical measurements and sensory evaluations were conducted at the same condition during storage at 4 and $25^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. Most of the vegetative bacteria cells in kiwi juice were destroyed by heat treatment over $65^{\circ}C$, and they did not actively grow in kiwi juice after pasteurization. The D values of bacteria in kiwi juice by tubular type of heating exchange were 4.17, 1.47 and 0.81 sec at 65, 75 and $85^{\circ}C$, respectively. The growth of microorganisms during storage were not detected in the most samples. The amounts of vitamin C decreased as the pasteurization-storage-temperature and storage time increased. While reducing sugar increased as the pasteurization-storage temperature-storage time increased, it decreased rapidly after 20 days of storage. Hunter's color values L, a and b of stored kiwi juice were decreased at all storage conditions, browning reaction rate increased as the pasteurization-storage-temperature was decreased.
