  • This study used a real-scale model experiment to reproduce internal fires in residential buildings such as a multi-dwelling unit, in order to prevent damage caused by tens of thousands of fires witnessed each year and to take measures to cope with them. For experimental conditions, different opening sizes were applied to measure and analyze the heating temperature of the exterior wall. Results drawn are as follow : On top of this, the experimental conditions had whether to install shading and put a shading length differently, before measuring and analyzing the heating temperature of the exterior wall. Subsequent results were drawn as shown below. Based on the maximum temperature, the temperature was lowered as much as around 90℃ at 150mm, around 150℃ or over at 300mm and over 175℃ at 450mm. It also turned out that the difference in maximum temperature dropped by around 180℃ or over. This indicated that the shading installation works well in lowering flame temperature generated by fire spread of the exterior wall.

  • Purpose: Recently, significant heat loss through the window takes place in buildings. Nevertheless, there exists little literature concerning the exterior horizontal shading devices and the design criteria are not clearly settled yet. Applying the exterior horizontal shading devices is more efficient as compared to the interior shading devices in that solar radiation can be directly blocked before passing through the window or the envelope. The purpose of this study is to reduce the internal load by designing the exterior horizontal shading devices and verify the degree of reduction in energy consumption. Method: This study aims to reduce energy consumption in cooling and heating through proposing proper length and shape of the exterior horizontal shading devices in public buildings. In the process, actual energy data and the Design Builder simulation program are utilized. In addition, economic aspect is considered to figure out the optimal length of the exterior horizontal shading devices that maximizes efficiency. Result: As a result, the proper length and shape of the exterior horizontal shading devices are provided as follows: 1) Energy consumption in cooling and heating is minimized when the exterior horizontal shading devices are designed as 0.5m*2. 2) Electricity bill is the lowest when the exterior horizontal shading devices are designed as 3.3m*2. The gap between maximum and minimum electricity bill is about 7.8~14%.

  • Among excursion and ferry boats, small boats with a length of less than 12 m are exempted from the stability standard according to the ship safety act. The boarding capacity of these small excursion and ferry boats is calculated by the seating area according to the excursion ship and ferry business act. Many excursion and ferry boats have installed deck structures such as awnings after launching. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the cause of the accident by estimating the stability based on the case of an actual ferry boat capsizing accident. The analysis results indicated that passengers stood up to disembark at the same time while the boarding capacity was exceeded. However, even if the ferry boat complied with the boarding capacity, a possibility of capsize existed if the passengers on one side of the boat stood up. Therefore, the following were suggested to improve the safety: calculating the boarding capacity using the stability test and recommending the maximum total weight for the boarding capacity.
