Limit state design has been implemented in Korea since 2015; however, there exists no specification of lateral load determination on retaining wall due to the Korean standard traffic load on retaining wall's backfill surface. The lateral load from traffic depends on lane number, standard truck's axle loads and locations, loading distance from the inner wall. The concept of equivalent height of soil accounting for traffic loadings is typically used for design of retaining walls to quantify the traffic loads transmitted to the inner wall faces. Due to the different characteristics of the standard design trucks between Korea and US (AASHTO), the direct use of the guidelines from AASHTO LRFD leads to incorrect estimation of traffic load effects on retaining walls. This paper presents the results of evaluation of equivalent height of soil to reflect the Korean standard truck, based on the findings from analytical solutions using Bounessq's theory and numerical assessment using 2D finite element method. Consequently, it was found that the equivalent heights of soil from the Korean standard truck load were lower for lower retaining wall height.
In this study, fatigue crack growth rate of a cracked railway bogie frame under variable amplitude loading is predicted by applying linear elastic fracture mechanics. For this purpose, we find the critical points by reference surveying on cracked railway bogie frames. And we make an effective load history by synthesizing the dynamic load measured from the critical points of railway bogie frame during commercial line operation and the static load calculated from structural analysis. Crack growth analyses are performed at the 3 critical points under the commercial operation loading condition by assuming an initial crack size as 40 mm. and the results are compared with the experimental results from Japanese railway bogie frame crack growth case. From the analysis results, we find that around 500,000 km operating distance is necessary to bring crack growth from the initial crack to unstable crack. And it takes around 3.8 normal operating years. We conclude that it is enough time to detect the crack between normal maintenance period.
The important elements in pavement design criteria are the stress and strain distributions. To obtain reasonable stress and strain distribution, tire contact area and tire pressures are very important. This study presents a viscoelastic characterization of flexible pavement subjected to moving loads. During the test, both longitudinal and lateral strains were measured at the bottom of asphalt layers and in-situ measurements were compared with the results of numerical analysis. A 3-dimension finite element model was used to simulate each test section and a step loading approximation has been adopted to analyze the effect of a moving vehicle on pavement behaviors. For viscoelastic analysis, relaxation moduli, E(t), of asphalt mixtures were obtained from laboratory test. Field responses reveal the strain anisotropy (i.e., discrepancy between longitudinal and lateral strains), and the amplitude of strain normally decreases as the vehicle speed increases. In most cases, lateral strain was smaller than longitudinal strain, and strain reduction was more significant in lateral direction.
The analysis of corrugated steel pipes is depending on a second dimension frame analysis or compressed ring model. This is the analysis not to consider the behavior of soil-structure interaction. The behavior of load resistance system is varied according to the depth of cover and the spacing of corrugated steel pipes structure. Therefore, the behavior characteristic of corrugated steel pipes was confirmed through finite element analysis to consider the activity of soil-structure interaction. If soil cover is filled up to the more of optimal depth, behavior of corrugated steel pipes are similar to those of ductile steel pipes according to the earth pressure distribution and effects of traffic loads are decreased. But, If soil cover is filled up to the less of optimal depth, corrugated steel pipes can't behave completely as ductile steel pipes because the passive earth pressure acting on side of corrugated steel pipes is decreased according to the decrement of vertical earth pressure, and the traffic loads influence on the section forces is increased, so that the traffic loads dominated the behavior of corrugated steel pipes.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of traffic loads on retaining wall stability. There is insufficient research on lateral earth pressure on retaining wall due to traffic load. In addition, limited detailed designs of retaining wall for transportation including number of lanes of road, magnitudes of axle loads, and vehicle formations are available. Because the lateral earth pressure on the retaining wall due to traffic loads is a function of the lateral distance from retaining wall, the wall height, and the locations of lanes, the analysis of lateral load on retaining wall from traffic loads is performed with direct or indirect reflection of these factors. As a result of the analysis, lateral earth loads induced from traffics can be considered negligible if the lateral distance of traffic load from wall exceeds the height of retaining wall. Therefore, it is practically reasonable to consider traffic loads within a lateral distance between wall and traffic load of the height of retaining wall.

This study improved the existing method of using the longitudinal strain and concept of influence line to develop Bridge Weigh-in-Motion system without axle detector using the dynamic strain of the bridge girders and concrete slab. This paper first describes the considered algorithms of extracting passing vehicle information from the dynamic strain signal measured at the bridge slab, girders, and cross beams. Two different analysis methods of 1) influence line method, and 2) neural network method are considered, and parameter study of measurement locations is also performed. Then the procedures and the results of field tests are described. The field tests are performed to acquire training sets and test sets for neural networks, and also to verify and compare performances of the considered algorithms. Finally, comparison between the results of different algorithms and discussions are followed. For a PSC I-girder bridge, vehicle weight can be calculated within a reasonable error range using the dynamic strain gauge installed on the girders. The passing lane and passing speed of the vehicle can be accurately estimated using the strain signal from the concrete slab. The passing speed and peak duration were added to the input variables to reflect the influence of the dynamic interaction between the bridge and vehicles, and impact of the distance between axles, respectively; thus improving the accuracy of the weight calculation.

Dynamic displacements of structures shows general behavior of structures. Generally, It is used to estimate structure condition and trustworthy physical quantity directly. Especially, measuring vertical displacement which is affected by moving load is very important part to find or identify a problem of bridge in advance. However directly measuring vertical displacement of the bridge is difficult because of test conditions and restriction of measuring equipment. In this study, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to suggest estimation method of bridge displacement to overcome constrain conditions, restriction and so on. Horizontal strain and vertical displacement which are measured by appling random moving load on the bridge are applied for learning and verification of ANN. Measured horizontal strain is used to learn ANN to estimate vertical displacement of the bridge. Numerical analysis is used to acquire learning data for axis strain and vertical displacement for applying ANN. Moving load scenario which is made by vehicle type and vehicle distance time using Pearson Type III distribution is applied to analysis modeling to reflect real traffic situation. Estimated vertical displacement in respect of horizontal strain according to learning result using ANN is compared with vertical displacement of experiment and it presents vertical displacement of experiment well.

The cables in cable-stayed bridges are under high stress and are very sensitive to vibration due to their small section areas compared with other members. Therefore, it is reasonable to evaluate the cable impact factor by taking into account the dynamic effect due to moving-vehicle motion. In this study, the cable impact factors were evaluated via moving-vehicle-load analysis, considering the design parameters, i.e., vehicle weight, cable model, road surface roughness, vehicle speed, longitudinal distance between vehicles. For this purpose, two steel composite cable-stayed bridges with 230- and 540-m main spans were selected. The results of the analysis were then compared with those of the influence line method that is currently being used in design practice. The road surface roughness was randomly generated based on ISO 8608, and the convergence of impact factors according to the number of generated road surfaces was evaluated to improve the reliability of the results. A9-d.o.f. tractor-trailer vehicle was used, and the vehicle motion was derived from Lagrange's equation. 3D finite element models for the selected cable-stayed bridges were constructed with truss elements having equivalent moduli for the cables, and with beam elements for the girders and the pylons. The direct integration method was used for the analysis of the bridge-vehicle interaction, and the analysis was conducted iteratively until the displacement error rate of the bridge was within the specified tolerance. It was acknowledged that the influence line method, which cannot consider the dynamic effect due to moving-vehicle motion, could underestimate the impact factors of the end-cables at the side spans, unlike moving-vehicle-load analysis.
