  • 본 논문은 차세대 멀티미디어의 핵심기기 중의 하나로 주목받고 있는 고밀도 광디스크 시스템의 근간 기술인 광학계 구성 기술에 대한 설명으로서, 특히 차세대 광학계에 필수적인 적색 반도체 레이저 기술과 홀로그램 광학소자에 의한 집적화 기술의 개발 현황과, 업계에서는 처음으로 LG전자가 고밀도 광디스크 시스템에 실장한 홀로그램 적색반도체 레이저에 대하여 기술하고자 한다.

Fabrication of the Single-Mode External-Cavity Laser using Micro Block Stacking Technique (Micro Block Stacking 방법으로 제작한 집적형 단일모드 외부 공진 레이저)

  • The integrated external cavity laser has been fabricated with a 1550 nm FP-LD, an optical filter, a micro ball lens and accurate ceramic blocks using a micro-block stacking (MBS) technique. The integrated external cavity laser module whose size is only $2.0{\times}2.1{\times}0.7\;mm^3$ has been mounted on the TO-CAN package. For the case of the 1.8% transmission filter, the single mode characteristic has been obtained with the optical power of -27.1 dBm and the SMSR of 31.7 dB.

  • We investigated a Ti:LiNbO$_3$ based integrated-optic polarization controller with a Ti-indiffused waveguide along the z-axis utilizing the electro-optic effect. The device consists of a first quarter-wave (λ/4) phase-shifter followed by a half-wave(λ/2) and a second quarter-wave(λ/4) wave-plate, which is rotated synchronously with the first quarter-wave phase-shifter. We analyzed the operation principles of the device utilizing cascaded transfer matrices based on Jones matrix and Poincare sphere, simulated driving voltages for various input states of polarization (SOP), and theoretically confirmed transformations from any arbitrary input SOP into any general output SOP.

  • We designed and fabricated integrated-optic tunable polarization controllers based on $LiNbO_3$ with the Ti-indiffused waveguide along the y-axis utilizing the electro-optic effect. The device consists of $TE↔TM$ mode converters and TE/TM phase shifters. We analyzed the operation principles of each device utilizing transfer matrices based on a Jones matrix and simulated shifting of the center wavelength by inducing voltage. We confirmed experimentally that the fabricated devices control the tunability of the center wavelength and the input SOP.

Fabrication of deflector integrated laser diodes and light deflection (광 편향기 집적 레이저 다이오드의 제작 및 광의 편향)

  • A light deflector integrated laser diode(LD) was fabricated and the characteristics of LD and ourput beam deflection as a function of deflector injection current were measured. To integrate the deflector with LD, a passive waveguide was integrated with the LD and a triangular-type light deflector was fabricated on the upper clad of the passive waveguide section. Light deflection from the fabricated light deflector is controlled by the effective refractive index variation induced by carrier injection. To characterize the effect of the deflector injection current, threshold current, slope efficiency, and output beam spectrum were measured as a function of deflector injection current. From these measured data, the increment in the threshold current and the decrement of the slope efficiency were observed. However, the output beam spectrum was not affected by the deflector. The Beam Propagation Method(BPM) was used to simulate the proposed device and the light deflection was measured by the far-field pattern of the output beam as a function of the deflector injection current. In the fabricated deflector integrated LD, the deflection angle of 1.9$^{\circ}$ at the injection current of 15 ㎃ was obtained.

Optical-waveguide Phase Modulators Based on High-refractive-index Fluorinated Polyimide (고굴절률 불화폴리이미드를 이용한 광도파로 위상변조기 제작 및 특성 분석)

  • Fluorinated polyimide has excellent light transmittance and a high optical refractive index, and is useful for producing optical-waveguide phase modulators with low optical loss and low electric power consumption. In this work, an optical-waveguide phase modulator is designed and fabricated based on a high-refractive-index fluorinated polyimide, and its characteristics are measured. An efficient protocol for characterizing the loss components of the optical waveguide is proposed, and the propagation loss of the fabricated polyimide optical waveguide is confirmed to be 0.9 dB/cm. The phase modulator requires 9.1 mW of power for phase change of π, and the response time is 290 μs, which is improved by tenfold compared to a previous demonstration of polymeric phase modulators.

  • New nonliner organic materials have been developed for all-optical signal processing. The organic materials possess many interesting features for this purpose. Unlike inorganic molecules the delocalized $\pi$-electron distribution and intramolecular charge transfer mevhanism allows certain organic molecules to respond highly anharmonically to an external field. In the present paper the origins of nonlinear phenomena, advantages of orgnic materials and structures of organic devices will be discussed.

  • 실리콘은 반도체 산업에 이용되는 주된 물질로, 원가, 기능성, 신뢰도 등의 면에서 이점을 가지고 있기 때문에 실리콘칩 위에 기존의 전기적 소자와 광전기적 소자들을 집적하고자 하는 노력이 계속되고 있다. 특히 실리콘 나노결정 (nc-Si)으로부터 가시광 방출을 관측한 이래, 이를 기반으로 한 광학적 능동매질에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있는데, 최근에는 nc-Si을 이용한 LED와 어븀이 첨가된 nc-Si을 이용한 nc-Si/silica 광 도파로 광증폭기에서의 광학적 이득이 보고 된 바 있다. (중략)
