Mumps is an acute viral disease that affects the entire body, including inflammation of the salivary glands. Mumps is accompanied by unilateral or bilateral parotid gland swelling and pain. Mumps virus is spread to others by air, saliva, direct contact, and urine, and occurs in high-density population places such as schools, army, etc. Bilateral testicular involvement is seen in 10-60% of cases. If mumps orchitis affect post-pubertal men, approximately 50% of the infected people are said to experience severe testicular atrophy within 1-2 months as a complication. Mumps orchitis can alter the count, morphology, and motility of sperm and result in oligozoospermia and infertility caused by a rare azoospermia. When suspected of mumps orchitis, active initial symptomatic treatment can prevent infertility due to azoospermia in future adults. A case of mumps orchitis report two cases with references to the ultrasonnography and semen.
On July and August 1997 two 15-year-old mates of a football team of Tongjin Middle School in northern Kyon99i-do, Korea were consecutively diagnosed as vivax malaria by peripheral blood smear. They had no histories of travelling abroad or drug abuse. Thry witnessed that othev mates in the tram were ill of fever in the same period. A small survey was therefore undertaken to determine whether vivax malaria was outbroken locally. A total of 57 students of the team living together in a dormitory was examined for history of fever. presence of splenomegaly, blood smear and anti-p. uiuax antibody test by immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) . Except for the above two patients, only one case rrvraled a marginal tiler of IFAT. No other positive findings of vivax malaria were found. In the results of this local survey. no move cases of vivax malaria were revealed except the two sporadic cases.

A 5-year-old Siamese cat was presented at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Seoul National University with visual impairment. The cat was blind and its pupillary light reflexes were sluggish OU. While there were no remarkable findings in the anterior segment, generalized tapetal hyperreflectivity and retinal vascular attenuation were observed in the posterior segment of both eyes. Any historical significance and clinical symptoms suggestive of infection or inflammation were absent. All of the above findings strongly indicated a diagnosis of hereditary retinal degeneration in the cat. This clinical case report demonstrates the possibility of the presence of feline hereditary retinal degeneration in Korea. Awareness of the condition should be raised to prevent the spread of hereditary retinopathy in the Korean cat population.
A total of 5 animals including 3 raccoons, 1 badger, and 1 fennec fox kept in outdoor exhibits at the Everland Zoological Gardens showed depression, anorexia, dyspnea, serous oculonasal discharge, diarrhea, and convulsions. All the affected animals died within 10 days after the onset of clinical signs. This outbreak lasted about 4 months. On necropsy, major gross lesions were confined to the lungs. Red to grey sublobular to lobular consolidations with various sized tan to reddish spots were observed in the lungs. Histopathologically, the pulmonary lesions were characterized by acute to subacute bronchointerstitial pneumonia with secondary bacterial or adenoviral infections. Intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies compatible with canine distemper virus (CDV) were found in the lung, urinary bladder, kidney, intrahepatic bile duct, stomach, small and large intestines. Multifocal areas of severe demyelination and accumulation of gitter cells or nonsuppurative inflammation were seen in the brains of 2 raccoons. CDV -specific antigens were demonstrated in the lung sections on immunofluorescent assay. The present report describes an outbreak of CDV infection in a zoo and indicates the range of susceptible zoo animal species.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the status of intestinal protozoan infections in the children of specific groups. A total number of 441(male 250; female 191) consisting of 224 children of national feeble minded children institute, 59 Han-Bit blindness students, 158 children of local mental retardation children institute(Kang-Dong Ku) of specific groups were examined. The method employed was formalin-ether sedimentation technique with Lugol's iodine stain. The results were as follows: 1) The positive rates for any kinds of protozoan cysts were 13.8%(72 positives out of 441 samples) with sexual difference of 14.0% in male and 12.6% in female. 2) In the institute differences of positive rates of protozoan cysts were 15.2% in national feeble minded children institute, 16.9% in Han-Bit blindness school, and local mental retardation children institute(Kang-Dong Ku). 3) Cysts of Entamoeba coli were recovered in 8.6% and cysts of pathogenic amoeba, Entamoeba histolytica were found in 1.4%. Cysts of Endolimax nana (3.4%). Giardia lamblia (2.9%) were found in this study. 4) The degree of multiple infections of protozoan cysts were; single infection 81.4%, double infection 16.9% and quadriple infection 1.7% respectively.
Gut microbiota is a group of microorganisms that resides in the intestine and serves many important functions in human health. Using 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing analysis, a wide variety of bacteria in human gastrointestinal tract has been identified along with intriguing findings that there is a different bacterial composition among individuals. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a procedure of stool transplantation from healthy donors to patients suffering from various diseases. Specifically, FMT is able to alter the composition of gut microbiota of recipients and therefore could be an effective treatment for the patients with gastrointestinal diseases including recurrent Clostridium difficile infection, inflammatory bowel disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. Here we review a list of human diseases related to gut microbiota disturbance and the case studies of FMT. We also summarize medicines and diagnostic tools that are under development. Therefore, gut microbiota can be a next generation's biotherapy for promotion of health and treatment of chronic diseases.
Investment in health through an array of public health policies will lead to improvement of health at all levels, and the improved health can reduce the socioeconomic costs incurred with diseases. And finally, with reduced healthcare costs associated with diseases and health problems, economy will be able to achieve economic growth and development. Using simultaneous equations model, this study aims to identify this possible channel from public health policies to economic growth. Specifically, the policy effect is investigated on a basis of main disease groups and aging groups. The public health policies are proved to reduce healthcare costs related with disease groups including respiratory, digestive, circulative, and infectious disease, and with all age groups except 20~39 group. And the reduced healthcare costs have shown to increase the real gross domestic products in those group above.
