The Characteristics of small scale water works at west Gyeong-nam was analyzed by investigationg the 6,569 cases which were carried out from Jan. 2005 to Dec. 2010. The result of the research about treated water quality the highest mean concentration of fluorine was 0.19 mg/L at Hamyang the highest mean concentration of Nitrite nitrogen was 3.7 mg/L at Namhae each the highest mean concentration of Hardness, Total solids, Sulfate was 177 mg/L, 271 mg/L, 80 mg/L at Uiryeong. In the case of waterworks originated from valleys, the total bacterial count and turbidity were higher than ones originated from groundwater. On the other hand, nitrate nitrogen, total solids, hardness, sulfate, fluorine and iron were detected more than ones originated from valleys.
Contents of the specific components in the natural mineral water was discussed in relation to the well depth and geology. According to water quality data during the last five years(1998~2002), the nitrate and fluoride concentrations, and pH averaged 0.89~ 1.09 mg/L, 0.37~0.45 mg/L, and 7.30~7.59, respectively. These values are the similar range to those of generalized groundwater having same well depths, implying that shallow groundwaters flow into the production wells. In general, no clear relationships between the water quality, well depth, and geology were found. The average arsenic concentration of the natural mineral water increased from 0.0024 mg/L in 1999 to 0.0066 mg/L in 2002. The percentage of production well with arsenic level higher than 0.001 mg/L also increased from 20.1% in 1999 to 64.9% in 2002. In 2002, 11 out of 57 production wells exceed 0.001 mg/L which will be announced as a new arsenic standard for drinking water by USEPA.

The effect of aluminosilicate sol on the formation of mullite layer in zircon shell mold was investigated. Aluminosilicate sol was prepared by mixing of colloidal silica(NALCO(R) 1130) and an aqueous solution of aluminium nitrate at room temperature. The sol gelled at 50$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hrs. It was identified that the gel consists of aluminosilicate complexes and gibbsite. The coordination number of all aluminium ion bonded with silicon ion was four. Mullite phase formed by sintering above 1300$^{\circ}C$. XRD peak of mullite sharpened with increasing sintering temperature and the content of aluminium nitrate. Mullite phase displayed whisker-like 0.5~5${\mu}m $ particles. Separation between 1st and 3rd layers during sintering and the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between residual silica and mullite.

The estimated total material transports through the Cheju Strait using all data which investigated in 1997 and 1999 are as follows; A large amount of suspended sediments and dissovted inorganic nutrients are carried tothe South Sea through the Cheju Strait by a persistent eastward flow (Cheju Current) from the Y311ow Sea andthe East China Sea. The annual material Oanspous by the Cheju Current are as follows; 22.9${\times}$10$^6$ ton yr$^{-1}$(SS), 0.52${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ (NH$_4\;^+$), 6.05${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ (NO$_3\;^-$), 0.36${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ (PO$_4\;^{3-}$), 10.27${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ (Si(OH)$_4$). The annual suspended sediment flux per water transport in the Cheju Strait (44.48${\times}$10$^6$ ton yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$) is about 1.7 larger than that in the Korean Strait (26.08${\times}$10$^6$ ton yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$). The annual nitrate flux per water transport (11.60${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$) is about 1.2 larger than that in the Korean Strait (9.72${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$) and 2/3 of that by Kuroshio in the East China Sea (18.55${\times}$10$^{10}$ ton yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$). It suggests that chemical rich Cheju Current will play a significant role in the biogeochemical processes in the South Sea where the huge land-based waste are introduced.

The waste solution discharged from the LCD manufacturing process contains acids like nitric, acetic and phosphoric acid and metal ions such as Al, Mo and other impurities. It is important to remove impurities less than 1 ppm in phosphoric acid to reuse as an etchant because the residual impurities even in sub-ppm concentration in semiconductor materials play a major role on the electronic properties. In this study, a mixed system of solvent extraction, diffusion dialysis and ion-exchange was developed to commercialize in an efficient system fur recovering the high-purity phosphoric acid. By vacuum evaporation, almost 99% of nitric and acetic acid was removed. And by solvent extraction method with tri-octyl phosphate (TOP) as an extractant, the removal of acetic and nitric acid from the acid mixture was achieved effectively at the ratio A/O=1/3 with 4th stage of extraction stage. About 97.5% of Al and 36.7% of Mo were removed by diffusion dialysis. Essentially almost complete removal of metal ions and purification of high-purity phosphoric acid could be obtained by using ion exchange.

A coated wire ion selective electrode for nitrate (nitrate-CWE_ was constructed using epoxy resin, ion exchanger and plasticizer as a polymer membrane. It's stility, the composition of a polymer membrane, the response characteristics, the selectivity were examined and applied to the environmental analysis. The nitrate-CWE was prepared using a copper wire, wihch was coated with epoxy resin being incorporated with the nitrate ion exchanger and plasticizer. The best composition of the polymer membrane for the nitrate-CWE was obtained by mixing epoxy resin, ion exchanger and plasticizer in the ratio of 2:1:0.4. The potential (56.3$\pm$0.5 mV) of stick form nitrate-CWE in this composition was close to that (59.2 mV) of Nernstian response. The detection limit for nitrate ion were found to the about $6 \times 10^{-5}M$ and the useful pH was 2.5 $\sim$ 10.3. Furthermore, the selectivity of iodide and perchrorate for the nitrage-CWE was also much improved compared with that for a liquid membrane nitrate electrode. The nitrate-CWE was used to determind $NO_x$ in stack gas. The results were in good agreement with those obtained either by electrode method or by the improved NEDA method within a relative error of 4.0%.
In this study, the effects of applied voltage, solution pH and coexistence of other ions such as sulfate ion (${SO_4}^{2-}$) and chloride ion ($Cl^-$) were investigated on the removal of nitrate-nitrogen ($NO_3{^-}-N$) from ground water by electrodialysis. The examined operating conditions were evaluated for optimizing the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$. Real ground water samples taken from a rural area of Yongin city and artificial ones with components similar to the real ground water were tested for the study, which contained $NO_3{^-}-N$ concentration of 17mg/L that exceeds current drinking water quality standard of 10 mg/L. The increase in the removal rate of $NO_3{^-}-N$ was observed as the applied voltage increased from 5V to 30V, while no significant increase in the removal rate appeared at the applied voltage beyond 20V during a given operating time. The removal rate appeared to get lower at both acidic and basic condition, compared to neutral pH. Coexistence of of ${SO_4}^{2-}$and $Cl^-$ demanded much longer operating time to achieve a given removal rate or to meet a certain level of treated water concentration. When nitrate ion was combined with ${SO_4}^{2-}$and $Cl^-$, the removal rate was reduced by 4.29% and 10.83%, respectively.
In this study we verified if the electro-coagulation process can treat properly the nitrate and fluoride that are not removed well in the conventional small water treatment plants which usually employ chlorination and filtration only. As we gave a change of electrode material and gap-distance between electrodes, removal efficiency of the nitrate and fluoride was determined by electro-coagulation process which were equipped with aluminum and stainless steel (SUS304) electrodes. In addition, electrode durability was investigated by determination of electrodes mass change during the repetitive experiments. Removal efficiency was great when aluminum was used as an anode material. Nitrate removals increased as electric density and number of electrodes increased, but fluoride removal was less sensitive to both parameters than nitrate. After 10 minutes of contact time with the current density from $1{\times}10^{-3}$ to $3{\times}10^{-3}A/cm^{2}$, nitrate and fluoride concentration ranged from 9.2 to 1.2mg/L and from 0.02 to 0.01mg/L, which satisfied the regulation limits. Regardless of the repeating number of experiments, removal efficiency of both ions were almost similar and the change of electrode mass ranged within ${\pm}$0.5%, indicating that the loss of the electrode mass is not so much great under the limited circumstances.
Changes in nitrite content, TBARS content and color of meat products during storage were examined as part of studies addressing the reduction of residual nitrite and to ensure the safety of meat products. All 4 kinds of domestic meat product tested, Vienna sausage, bacon, smoked-ham and Dduggalbi, manufactured by C and L domestic companies had very low contents of residual nitrite, for below the legal tolerance limit of 70 ppm, and the residual nitrite decreased with storage. The reduction in nitrite content differed with each product, showing the greatest reduction in Vienna sausage and the least reduction in bacon when stored at $4^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, when stored at $-20^{\circ}C$, the nitrite content of bacon decreased more rapidly than the other meat products. The results of this study show that the nitrite content of meat products decreases during storage, and that the rate of decrease is quite dependent on the storage temperature. In addition, the nitrite contents of most domestic meat products are very low compared to the legal limits, thus the health risks of nitrite in meat products might not be of great concern. More research on the reduction of residual nitrite and on the development of alternatives to nitrite is necessary.
The electrode material performances of electric double layer capacitor(EDLC) were investigated using mesopous active carbon fiber(ACF), which was prepared by the iron exchange method. The mesoporous ACF had pore characteristics of specific surface area around 1249, 664 $m^2$/g, mesoporous fraction around 70.6-81.3% and meanpore size around 2.78-4.14 nm. The results showed that as HNO3 treatment time decreased, the specific surface area increased and mesoporous fraction decreased. To investigate electrochemical performance of EDLC, unit cell was manufactured using mesoporus ACF, conducting material and binder; organic elctrolyte was used on this experiment. The specific capacitance of ACF treated with HNO3 for 2 hours turned out to be 0.47 $F/cm^2$and the results of the cyclic charge-discharge tests were stable. Thus, the electrochemical performance of EDLC was mainly dependent on specific surface area of ACF electrode and the diffusion resistance of charge decreased as the mesopore increased.
