  • SPAD(Sulfur Particle Autotrophic Denitrification) process is a biological denitrification process which uses elemental sulfur as an electron donor and a mall amount of organic to assist autotrophic denitrification. $^{1)}$SPAD process was applied to a nitrate containing wastewater (200-300mg $NO_3\;^-$ -N/L) with high concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ ion(5000-15000mg/L) from S. Steel Co. in Ulsan city, to est the feasibility of SPAD process. This pilot was operated from November 2001 to early March 2002, and the inner temperature of the pilot was controlled around $20^{\circ}C$. In spite of low temperature, denitrification efficiency was maintained above 90% achieving the average effluent $NO_3\;^-N$ concentration around 20mg$NO_3\;^-$ -N/L.

The Effect of Fumed Silica on Nitrate Reduction by Zero-valent Iron (흄드 실리카가 영가철에 의한 질산성질소 환원에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of silica(fumed) on nitrate reduction by zero-valent iron(ZVI) was studied using batch experiment. The reduction of nitrate was tested in three different aqueous media including de-ionized water, artificial groundwater and real groundwater contaminated by nitrate. Kinetics of nitrate reduction in groundwater were faster than those in de-ionized water, and first-order rate constant($k_{obs}$) of ZVI/silica(fumed) process was about 2.5 time greater than that of ZVI process in groundwater. Amendment of Silica(fumed) also decreased ammonium presumably through adsorption on silica surface. The pHs in all processes increased due to oxidation of ZVI, but the increase was lower in groundwater due to buffering capacity of groundwater. The result also showed amount of reduced nitrate increased as initial nitrate concentration increased in groundwater. Separate adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that fumed silica itself had some degree of adsorption capacity for ammonium. The overall results indicated that silica(fumed) might be a promising material for enhancing nitrate reduction by ZVI.

경안천변 충적지하수의 수리지구화학 연구: 하천변에서의 양수에 수반된 지하수 유동 및 수질 변화

  • 경안천변의 충적층 지하수를 대상으로 농업활동 및 양수에 수반된 지하수 오염과 수리적 변동에 따른 수리지구화학 변화를 연구하였다. 사행하는 경안천에 의해 넓게 형성된 충적층 지역에서는 사계절 비닐하우스 농업이 활발히 이루어지고 있으며, 이를 위해 강변에 설치된 대형 관정을 통하여 지하수를 대량 양수하고 있다. 이러한 상황은 여러모로 강변여과 현장과 흡사하다. 지하수 내 주요 용존 이온의 공간적 분포는 양수에 수반된 수리적 변동과 밀접한 상관관계를 나타내었다. 즉, 대단위 양수에 의하여 충적 지하수계로의 하천수 유입이 가속화되며, 이에 따른 희석 효과에 의해 충적 지하수의 질산염 농도가 감소하는 경향을 보여주었다.

Runoff Loss of NO3-N Derived from Pig Manure Under Upland Condition (돈분이 시용된 밭토양에서 질산태질소의 유거손실)

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the runoff of nitrogen derived from pig manure under upland condition. Bare and maize cultivated conditions were compared to estimate the effect of plant on the runoff loss of nitrogen and other nutrients by application of pig manure. Soil used in this experiment was sandy loam, and the fermented pig manure was applied at the rate of 0, 50, and $100ton\;ha^{-1}$. The amount of runoff was measured after every rainfall and water samples were analyzed for nitrate and other cations. Runoff was increased with the rainfall, but was depended on the application rate of pig manure at both bare and maize cultivated plots. Concentrations of nitrate in runoff at 0, 50 and $100ton\;ha^{-1}$ application of pig manure were higher at the maize cultivated plots than those at bare plots by 86.9, 42.9, and 33.6%, respectively. However, total mass of nitrate by runoff loss was higher at the bare plot ranging from 1.34 to $3.15kg\;NO_3-N\;ha^{-1}$. The equivalent ratio of nitrate to sum of cations in runoff was higher at the bare plot than that of maize cultivated plots. The concentration of cations in runoff was in the order of K> Mg> Na> Ca.

  • This study investigated the TNT decomposition by the treatment of alkaline hydrolysis. To obtain this objecitive, spectrum shift characteristics, pH effect, kinetics, and product analysis were examined during the alkaline hydrolysis by means of hydroxide ions. At pH = 12, an aqueous solution of TNT was changed into yellow-brown coloring, in which its absorbances were newly increased in a range of wavelength 400-600 nm. From the kinetic data, pseudo-first-order rate constant in a excess of hydroxide ion, in contrast to TNT concentration, was $0.0022min^{-1}$, which means that the reaction rate between TNT and hydroxide ion can be very slow, and that 1,047 min is necessary to achieve a 90% reduction of the initial TNT. In products analyses, nitrite ions and formic acid were mainly produced by the alkaline hydrolysis, nitrate ions and oxalic acid as minor products were generated.

Leaching of Cathodic Active Materials from Spent Lithium Ion Battery (폐리튬이온전지로부터 분리한 양극활물질의 침출)

  • Leaching of $LiCoO_2$ as a cathodic active materials for recovering Li and Co from spent lithium ion battery was investigated in terms of reaction variables. At the optimum condition determined in the previous work, Li and Co in a $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ solution were dissolved 70~80% and 40%, respectively. Li and Co were leached over 95% with the addition of a reductant such as $Na_2S_2O_3$ or $H_2O_2$. This behavior is probably due to the reduction of $Co^{3+}$ to $Co^{2+}$. Leaching of $LiCoCo_2$ powder obtained by calcination of an electrode materials from spent batteries was also carried out. Leaching efficiency of Li and Co were over 99% at the optimum condition with $H_2O_2$ addition of 1.7 vol.%. It seems to be due to the activation of $LiCoO_2$ by repeated charging and discharging or an imperfect crystal structure by deintercalation of Li.

Recovery of Nitric acid and Copper from Plating Waste of Automobile Wheel (자동차 휠 도금박리폐액으로부터 질산 및 구리의 회수)

  • It has been known that there are large amount of nitric acid and valuable metals, copper in the plating waste solution of automobile wheel. As nitric acid and valuable metals are high price and toxic, they should be recovered for economics and environment. Plating waste was extracted with TBP diluted with kerosene. The concentration of nitric acid in aqueous phase was analyzed by titration method by NaOH solution (0.1~1.0N) and the amount of metals by ICP-MS and ICP-AES. The concentration of copper in plating waste were 76,850 mg/L. The concentration of nitric acid in plating waste was 1.02 M. After three step extraction was performed with 50% TBP, each organic phase was stripped three times with distilled water to obtain 48.1% of nitric acid. Purity of final nitric acid was over 99.9% by ICP analysis. After recovery of nitric acid, copper was extracted with various solvent extractors like PC 88A, D2EPHA, LIX 84 and ISE 106. Among these extractors, 92% of copper was recovered by ISE 106 after 1st extraction and 30% $H_2SO_4$ stripping. Copper ion was reduced with $N_2H_4$ to make metal powders, respectively.

광촉매를 이용한 AN 중합공정폐수의 처리

  • $TiO_2$의 흡착에 의한 폐수처리는 거의 없으며, 본 실험의 T 산업 폐수에 평균 65mg/L 포함된 다량의 Cl ̄ 이온은 광산화 반응의 억제제(inhibitor)로서 작용하는 것으로 사료되었다. 암모니아성 질소가 초기 40 mg/L에서 운전시간 24 시간 후에는 60 mg/L까지 증가함을 알 수 있었으며, 질산성 질소의 농도는 15 mg/L 까지 증가하였다. ${PO_4}^{3-}$ 의 농도 변화는 거의 없었으며 1 mg/L 이하의 낮은 농도로 존재하였으며, 무기탄소 양은 매우 소량으로 거의 변화가 없었다. 운전기간 동안 pH 2.4 ~ 2.6으로 수렴하였고 반응속도의 변화는 거의 없었으며, CODcr에 대한 $BOD_{5}$의 분율은 반응이 진행될수록 증가하는 것으로 보아 난분해성의 폐수가 광촉매 반응 후 생물학적 처리가 가능한 폐수로 변화되었음을 알 수 있었다.

Oxalate Precipitation of Lanthanide and Actinide in a Simulated Radioactive Liquid Waste (모의 방사성용액에서 란탄족과 악티늄족원소의 옥살산침전)

  • The oxalate precipitation of lanthanide and actinide by oxalic acid was investigated in the simulated radioactive liquid waste, which was composed of 17 elements of alkali, alkaline earth(Cs, Rb, Ba, Sr), transition metal(Zr, Fe, Mo, Ni, Pd, Rh), lanthanide(La, Y, Nd, Ce, Eu) and actinide(Np, Am) in nitric acid solution. The effect of concentrations of nitric acid and ascorbic acid on the precipitation yield of each element in the simulated solution was examined at 0.5 M oxalic acid concentration. The precipitation yields of the elements were usually decreased with nitric acid concentration, nevertheless, the precipitation yields of lanthanide and actinide were more than 99%. Palladium was precipitated due to the reduction of Pd(II) into Pd metal by the addition of ascorbic acid in the oxalate precipitation and then, the precipitation yields of Mo, Fe, Ni, Ba decreased by 10~20% with concentration of ascorbic acid. The reductive precipitation of Pd(II) into Pd metal by the addition of ascorbic acid into the simulated radwaste occurred at below 1 M nitric acid concentration and its yield showed maximum at the ascorbic acid concentration of 0.01~0.02 M. The hydrazine suppressed the reductive precipitation of Pd by the ascorbic acid.

  • Effects of acids and pre-reductants in the analysis of arsenic have been studied by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry. The analytical results were strongly dependent on the acid concentrations. All the pre-reductants was very effective to observe the arsenic signal at strong acid concentrations (3 M-5 M). However, at the low acid condition (${\leq}0.1M$), L-cysteine only showed a reasonable effect on the absorption signal. When the sample was treated with the nitric acid, absorption signal was unstable and was also decreased. Although interference effects were observed from metal ions such as $Cr^{6+}$ and $Br^{5+}$ at low acid condition, the generation of hydride could be increased by the strong acid condition.
