Slowing of the Epigenetic Clock in Schizophrenia (조현병에서 나타나는 후성유전학적 나이 가속도 감속)

  • In the past decade, numerous studies have been carried out to quantify aging with the help of artificial intelligence. Using DNA methylation data, various models have been developed; these are commonly called epigenetic clocks. Epigenetic age acceleration is usually associated with disease conditions. Schizophrenia is a mental illness associated with severe mental and physical stress. This disease leads to high mortality and morbidity rates in young people compared with other psychological disorders. In the past, the research community considered this disease to be related to the accelerated aging hypothesis. In the current study, we wanted to investigate the epigenetic age acceleration changes in schizophrenia patients to obtain epigenetic insights into the disease. To measure the epigenetic age acceleration, we used two different DNA methylation clock models, namely, Horvath clock and Epi clock, as these are pan-tissue models. We utilized 450k array data compatible with both clocks. We found a slower epigenetic acceleration in the patients' samples when we used the Epi clock. We further analyzed the differentially methylated CpG sites between the control and cases and performed pathway enrichment analysis. We found that most of the CpGs are involved in neuronal processes.

Studies on Epidemiological Survey of Infectious Disease of Chicken in Korea (국내 닭 전염성 질병에 관한 역학적 조사 연구)

  • A total of 9, 012 cases was submitted for diagnosis of chicken diseases to Veterinary Research Institute, Rural Development Administration from domestic chicken farms during 18 years from 1971 to 1988. Of them, 6, 181 cases diagnosed as the infectious disease were investigated for the detection rate of infections on basis of you, season , and chicken age. The results obtained were summarized as followings:1. Detection rate or the infections was lowest as 49.3% in the year 1973, and highest as 78.6% in 1985 (average 68.6%). 2. Of infections detected, bacterial diseases were most frequent (32.6%), and followed in order by viral (26.3%), parasitic (7.7%), and fungal diseases (2.1%) in geneal. 3. The most frequently detected bacterial diseases in order of prevalence were mycoplasmosis (8.8%), colibacillosis (8.5%), and staphylococcosis (5.8%), and followed by salmonellosis pullorum disease , yolk sac disease, and salpingitis (0.8-1.5%). 4. In viral diseases, 7.5% of infections detected was lymphoid leukosis and 7.2%-Marek's disease, 4.4%-Newcastle disease, 2.0%-infectious laryngotracheitis, 1.7%-infectious bursal disease, and 1.0%-avian encephalomyelitis, while detection rate of infectious bronchitis, egg drop syndrome '76, and inclusion body hepatitis was less than 1.0%, respectively. 5. The most prevalent parasitic disease was coccidiosis (4.5%), followed by ascariasis (1.4%). The detection rate of other parasitic diseases including leucocytozoonosis, black head , heterakiasis, and ectoparasitosis was very as 0.2-0.7%, respectively: In fungal diseases, 2.0% of infections was detected as aspergillosis, and followed by candidiasis (0.1%). 6. Detection rate of the infections on basis of season was somewhat higher in summer. (27.7%), and autumn (27.7%) than in winter (23.5%), and spring (21.5%) in general. In bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases, there were the similar tendencies of detection rate as in infections, while parasitic diseases were much highly detected in summer (34.3%), and autumn (39.5%) than in any other season. 7. Among bacterial diseases colibacillosis was most frequently detected in summer, and staphylococcosis in autumn. In detection rate of viral diseases, Marek's disease, infectious laryngotracheitis, and infectious bursal disease was highest in summer, lymphold leukosis, fowl pox and egg drop syndrome '76 in autumn, and infectious trachitis in winter, repectively. The majority of important parasitic diseases including coccidiosis were highly detected in summer and autumn. 8. On basis of chicken age, detection rate of infections were highest in chicken of growing period between 30 and 150 days of age (41.4%), and followed by 35.3% in laying chicken over 150 days of age, and 17.3% in chicken of brooding age under 30 days of age. Bacterial, and parasitic diseases were most frequently detected in chicken of growing period, viral diseases in chicken of growing, and laying period as nearly equal rate of detection, and fungal diseases in chicken of brooding age.

  • 나트륨 과다 섭취는 고혈압과 심혈관계 등의 질병 유발 요인으로 영향을 미친다는 연구들이 보고됨에 따라, 식생활에서의 나트륨 관리 필요성이 증대되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 다양한 스마트 모바일 기기 플랫폼에서 활용할 수 있는 웹 어플리케이션으로 나트륨 함유량을 고려한 식단을 제안하는 서비스를 설계 및 구현 하였다. 개발된 서비스가 건강한 식생활을 유도하여 나트륨 과다 섭취에 따른 질병 유발 요인을 감소하는데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

  • 어류에서 바이러스성 질병이 중요하다는 인식이 증가하고 있으며 어류바이러스의 연구를 위한 세포주의 발달이 활성화되고 있다. 하지만상대적으로 해산유래의 세포 주 수는 많지 않다. 특히 유럽과 우리나라 남ㆍ서해안에서 고급어종인 감성돔은 림포 시스티스병, 이리도바이러스병 등의 바이러스성 질병이 발생하고 있다. 본 연구는 감성돔에서 유래한 세포주 개발을 목적으로 하였으며, 감성돔의 비장에서 유래한 세포를 초대배양 및 계대배양 하여 새로운 세포주를 확립하였으며, 일련의 실험을 실시하여 확립된 세포주의 특성을 확인하고 바이러스에 대한 감수성을 검사하였다.   • 육상과 떨어져 근무하고 있는 해양근로자들은 의료접근도의 한계성으로 인해 건강관리에 많은 어려움을 호소하고 있다. 이와 같은 해양근로자들에게 U- health기반의 해양원격의료시스템 도입을 한다면, 질병예방 및 건강관리, 나아가 건강증진에 이르기까지 매우 효과적일 것이다. 따라서 이 연구는 향후 해양근로자의 원격 건강관리 서비스를 위한 원격의료 도입 및 운영의 기본 방향을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

릴레이탐방(3)-HPAI 백신 연구개발로 양계산업 생산성 향상에 도움이 되길

  • 전염성 바이러스 질병의 일종으로 마렉, 뉴캣슬병을 비롯하여 양계산업의 악영향을 미치는 조류인플루엔자는 지난 2003년 전북과 강원도를 제외한 국내 19개 농장에서 처음 발병되어 3월 마지막 발병을 끝으로 종식되는 듯 하였으나, 2006년 전남과 충남지역에서 다섯 차례 발병되면서 매년 겨울철 상존하는 질병이 되지 않을까 우려되고 있다. 이에 따라 정부에서는 바이러스 전파를 막기 위해 발생농장 반경 3km이내 살처분을 시행했고, 이로인한 막대한 정책자금을 소요하면서 HPAI로 인한 국가적 재정손실을 우려하지 않을 수가 없다. HPAI에 대한 불안감에 대해 조기 퇴치하고 예방할 수 있는 백신 개발을 추진하는 충남대학교 수의과대학의 서상희 교수를 만나 실험 추진 상황과 백신연구에 대한 의견을 들어보았다.

  • The late 18C Malthus studied population growth for the first time, Verhulst the logistic model in 19C and, after that, the study of the predation competition between two species resulted in the appearance of Lotka-Volterra model and modified model supported by Gause's experiment with bacteria. Instable coexistence equilibrium being found, Solomon and Holling proposed functional and numerical response considering limited abilities of predator on prey, which applied to Lotka Volterra model. Nicholson and Baily, considering the predation between host and parasitoid in discrete time, made a model. In 20C there were developed various models of disease dynamics with the help of mathematics and real data and named SIS, SIR or SEIR on the basis of dynamical phenomena.

A Qualitative Study of Health Beliefs and Health Behaviors among Korean Breast Cancer Survivors (한국 여성 유방암 생존자의 건강신념과 건강행위에 대한 질적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore 1) the illness experiences, 2) health behaviors (causal thoughts), and 3) health beliefs (health behavior changes after cancer diagnosis) among Korean breast cancer survivors using focus groups, which is a form of qualitative research methods. Thus, this study intended to understand how the illness experiences and health beliefs are associated with health behaviors. Three focus groups composed of 16 breast cancer survivors living in Seoul and GyeongGi were conducted with 5 to 6 people in each group. For illness experiences, health beliefs, and health behaviors of breast cancer survivors, some major themes related to physical, behavioral, psychological, and social domains were identified. Understanding health beliefs and health behaviors for Korean breast cancer survivors will be an important step toward developing social work interventions for enhancing health promotion.

  • Extensively used case-control designs in medical studies can also be powerful and efficient for family association studies as long as an analysis method is developed for the evaluation of association between candidate genes and disease. Traditional Cochran-Armitage trend test is devised for independent subjects data, and to apply this trend test to the biologically related siblings one has to take into account the covariance among related family members in order to maintain the correct type I error rate. We propose a more powerful trend test by introducing weights that reflect the number of affected siblings in families for the evaluation of the association of genetic markers related to the disease. An application of our method to a sample family data, in addition to a small-scale simulation, is presented to compare the weighted and unweighted trend tests.
