  • Total thickness, areal density and mass moment of inertia of materials are important material factors for structural characteristics. In this work, a material-structural optimization was performed up to the maximum ballistic limit of multi-layered composite structures under high impact velocity followed by the investigation of the influence of these factors on an impact absorption performance. A unified model combined with Florence's and Awerbuch-Bonder's models was used in optimizing the multi-layered composite structure consisting of CMC, rubber, aluminum and Al-foam. Total thickness, areal density and mass moment of inertia were used for the optimization constraint. As shown in the results, the ballistic limit determined from a newly developed unified model was closely similar to the finite clement analysis. Additionally, the ballistic limit and impact absorption energy obtained by the optimized structure were improved approximately 16.8% and 26.7%, respectively comparing with a not optimized multi-layered structure.

  • An analysis is presented for the vibration and stability of Beck's column carring a tip mass at its free and subjected there to a follower compressive force by using variational approach. The influence of transverse shear deformation and rotatory inertial of the mass of the column upon the critical flutter load and frequency is considered, and Timoshenko's shear coefficient K' is calculated by Cowper's formulae. It is, moreover, worth noticing that the influence of inertial moment of tip mass upon the flutter load and frequency is investigated. The centroid of a tip mass is offset from the free end of the beam and located along its extended axis of the two cases, one of which has a tip mass increasing as .xi., the tip mass offset parameter, is augmented, the other has a tip mass constant but the inertial moment is variable according to a magnitude of .eta., the tip mass offset parament. This study reveals that the effects of inertial moment of a tip mass and larger value of P are specially remarkable even a tip mass is a same.

  • The added mass and the added moment of inertia of a hard chine hull for heave and pitch were calculated by strip method. For the $k_2$ coefficients, Hwang's values for the straight-framed sections were used and for $k_2$ coefficients Porter's values for ellipses were used in the calculation. Comparisons on added mass and added moment of inertia of hard chine hull with those of ordinary hull form were briefly discussed. The results of the calculation for hard Chine hull give greater valves than ordinary ships at zero Froude Number. Beam draft ratio seems to be much influenced on the added mass and added moment of inertia.
