  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the geomorphic characteristics of two erosional basins with same geological conditions. The study areas, the Okcheon basin ($36^{\circ}\;14'{\sim}36^{\circ}\;20'\;N,\;127^{\circ}\;32'\;30"{\sim}127^{\circ}\;37'\;37"\;E$) and Jincheon basin($36^{\circ}\;48'{\sim}37^{\circ}\;03'\;N,\;127^{\circ}\;22'{\sim}127^{\circ}\;36'\;E$), are located on middle part of the Geum river. The geological maps, a summit level map, and a drainage network map are created and analyzed the geomorphic characteristics. The main results are as follows: 1) The Okcheon basin and Jincheon basin are typical erosional basin, in which basin floor are composed of granite. 2) The formation of Okcheon basin and Jincheon basin resulted from differencial erosion after upwarping. 3) Okcheon basin and Jincheon basin are available for specialized agriculture area and a site of new settlement with satisfactory to accessibility.

  • This study aims to investigate the formation and sedimentary environment including formative period, grain composition and climate change from loess-paleosol sequence deposited on a gravel bed of river terrace in the Jincheon Basin, Chungbuk Province. The Jincheon section consists downward of a surface layer, loess-paleosol sequence, transitional layer I, transitional layer II and gravel bed. It can be suggested from the OSL age dating that the sequence was deposited during MIS 6 to 4. The sequence can be divided into four horizons based on the variation in the magnetic susceptibility values. Grain size analysis reveals that the sequence indicates similar properties of grain size to loess deposits in Korea and especially, the Y values in the sequence are lower than those in the loess and paleosol horizons in the Chinese Loess Plateau and similar to those in the Red Clay in the Chinese Loess Plateau and Xiashu loess in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. These Y values in the sequence can be attributed to the remote source and/or experience of intensive weathering process after deposition in the Korean Peninsula.

  • A CIA analysis (A-CN-K and A-CNK-FM ternary diagram) indicates that, unlike the general granitic hills of the Korean Peninsula, the chemical weathering of the granitic grus (sandy regolith) in the eastern Jincheon basin is variable in geomorphic site except the Chuncheon basin. In the study area, there are three types of hills, such as; inner hills, linear isolated hills, and outer hills. The weathered mantles of the outer hills and linear isolated hills are weakly altered, whereas the inner hill, the Bonghyeon profile, shows a stronger chemical loss of the compositions approximating saprolite. There are small differences between the outer hills and linear isolated hills. The Geumwang site is considered fresh rock due to a low lever of alteration, although its sampling profile shows sandy weathering mantles. In the profiles of the Masan and Mugeuks sites, the lower part of weathering mantles has not experienced a significant level of component loss, but the upper regoliths have substantially been modified. The alteration of the hills occurs by chemical loss of CaO and Na2O. K2O exhibited little variation at all sampling suites and it has not changed into saprolite.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the crop characteristics of 181 sweetpotato germplasms collected from Korea and overseas. The longest shoot vine length was observed in IT232211 (354.8 cm) and the shortest shoot vine length was observed in IT232185 (32 cm). The maximum numbers of shoot branches and nodes were produced by IT232091 (23.0) and IT232174 (67.8), respectively. Differences in Rapid Visco Analyser profiles were observed for pasting parameters such peak, trough, final, breakdown, and setback viscosities; and pasting temperature. The peak and breakdown viscosities were highest in IT232050 and IT232010, at 338.3 and 207.2 Rapid Visco Unit (RVU), respectively. The trough viscosity was lowest in IT232019 at 103.8 RVU. IT232101 had the highest final viscosity (284.6 RVU), and IT232192 had the highest setback viscosity (81.7 RVU). IT232197 had the highest pasting temperature at 86.8℃, and that of IT232134 was lowest at 72.7℃. To evaluate functional substance content, we analyzed 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and total polyphenol content. The highest frequency proportion of starch was in the 10%-15% range (50.8% of the plants), followed by the 5%-10% range (38.1% of the germplasms). Sugar content ranged from 13.5 to 33.3% (23.2% on average); the highest frequency proportion of sugar was in the 20%-25% range (56.9% of the germplasms), followed by the 25%-30% range (25.4% of the germplasms). The highest frequency proportion of water was in the 70%-80% range (52.5% of the germplasms), followed by the 60%-70% range (44.2% of the germplasms). Our results provide basic data for the selection of useful resources and for the development of new sweetpotato varieties.
