Analysis of the Entry Capacity of Roundabouts (Roundabout의 용량분석)

  • Signalized intersections are widely used in urban street network. However, it was reported that a roundabout is better than a signalized intersection in terms of delay when the approaching traffic volume for each bound is low. The objective of this study is to develop entry capacity models of roundabout and establish the warrant for signalized intersection based on the delay. The entry capacity of a roundabout is determined by the circulating traffic volume and the geometric design of the roundabout such as the diameter of central island, entry lane widths, and the circulating roadway width. The traffic and geometric characteristics of four roundabouts were collected and analyzed. The study reveals that; i)among the geometric features, the diameter of central island and the circulating roadway width influence the entry capacity, and ii)even though it is difficult to compare the models of each country due to different geometric features considered in the models, the models developed in this study show higher capacity than the models from Israel or Germany. These seem to be attributed to the facts that; i)the outside diameters of the roundabouts selected in this study are larger than in the other studies, and ii)the acceptable gap in Korea is smaller than that in the other countries. In order to compare the performances of round- about and signalized intersection, the performance of roundabouts was evaluated with the SIDRA. The simulation was conducted only for the roundabouts composed of single lane. According to the result of the analysis, it may be concluded that when the approaching traffic volume for each bound is lower than 600pcph, a roundabout is better than a signalized intersection in terms of its operational performance.

  • 본 논문에서는 유한용량 재진입 생산라인에서의 스케줄링 문제에 대한 유전자적 접근 방법을 제안하였다. 알고리즘에서 사용되는 염색체의 구조는 워크스테이션의 버퍼레벨에 대한 모든 가능한 경우를 고려하여 정의되었으며, 염색체의 각 유전자에는 그에 대응되는 시스템 상태에서 우선 순위를 갖는 작업 단계의 값이 할당되도록 하였다. 또한, 제안된 알고리즘의 구현 방법으로서 워크스테이션의 버퍼와 프로세싱 자원을 할당할 때 작업 간 우선 순위를 고려하는 동시에 각 워크스테이션의 로컬 유휴 상태를 지양하는 우선순위 기반 랜덤화 정책 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 실험을 통하여 제안된 알고리즘의 성능을 평가하였으며, 기존에 무한용량 재진입 생산라인 스케줄링 문제에 많이 이용되었던 휴리스틱과 비교하여 보다 효율적임을 보였다.

A Study on Effectiveness of Entry/Exit Flare at Roundabout (진입 및 진출차로 퍼짐에 따른 회전교차로 효과 분석)

  • This study deals with the roundabout by flare of entry and exit. The goal is to analyze the relative effectiveness of roundabout by flare of entry and exit. In pursuing the above, this study gives the particular attentions to comparing the performances using VISSIM software. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the single and double roundabouts are analyzed to have LOS F in the case of total entering vehicles of 2,400pcph and 4,400pcph Second, the roundabouts by entry flare analyzed to have LOS F in the case of total entering vehicles of 2,800~3,200pcph and the roundabouts by entry and exit flare analyzed to have LOS F in the case of total entering vehicles of 3,200~3,600pcph. Finally, result of comparative analysis of roundabout and roundabout by flare of entry and exit, capacity of roundabout by flare of entry and exit are located between 1-lane roundabout and 2-lane roundabout. therefore it analyzed that roundabout by flare of entry and exit can be added to new type roundabout.

A Study on the Operation Boundary of Ramp Metering System (진입제어 전략 적용 시 적정 운영영역 설정에 관한 연구)

  • The ramp metering strategy is one of the effective ways to solve the freeway traffic congestion in peak time periods. The study was initiated with assurance that the traffic conditions of ramp and mainline that mitigate the congestion would exist. Under the moderate traffic volume levels, ramp metering is expected to improve the quality of freeway operation. To derive a range of traffic condition, three operation strategies(Do nothing, ramp metering, minimum ramp control) were set up and the ALINEA algorithm was implemented with microscopic traffic simulator "VISSIM". The volumes of mainline and ramp are key parameters for the simulation scenarios. Measures of effectiveness for the study include mainline density and average vehicle speed. Operation boundaries in terms of traffic volume were proposed for operating ramp metering strategy. The results show that under the proposed traffic conditions the ramp metering was more successful to increase average vehicle speeds. Traffic controls under the operation boundaries of traffic levels give significant effects for density and average vehicle speed. The outcomes of this study would be useful to improve the performance of ramp metering strategies.

Development of Capacity Models Based on the Travel Characteristics at Roundabout (회전교차로의 통행특성에 근거한 용량 모형 개발)

  • Recently, many studies have been undertaken regarding the of introduction at roundabout in Korea. The studies related to roundabout capacity, however, is insufficient. Thus, the goal of this study is to develop a capacity model based on real data. The main results are as follows. First, roundabout capacity in Korea was analyzed using HCM capacity model based on critical gap and following time estimated by Probit model. Entry capacity in Korea was evaluated to be similar to that of the U.S in the case of low circulating flow($Q_c$), but higher in the case of high circulating flow($Q_c$). Second, the basic capacity models in Korea were newly developed based on real traffic data. Third, models that consider geometric structure were developed based on the basic models. Finally, all of the developed models mentioned above were analyzed to be statistically significant.

  • 최근 국내에서도 이동망 경쟁활성화를 위한 방안으로서 MVNO 규제제도를 도입해야 한다는 논의가 진행되고 있다. 이미 주요 선진국들은 이동통신망의 경쟁활성화, 유무선통합의 추진, 이동통신네트워크 여유용량 해소, 모바일 인터넷의 활성화를 위해 다소 입장의 차이는 있지만 MVNO 규제제도를 일반적으로 도입하는 추세이다. 또한, 새로운 MVNO 규제제도 하에서 다양한 신규사업자들이 이동통신시장에 진입하고 있다. 지난 2002년 10월 1일에는 영국의 유선사업자인 BT가 자회사인 MMO2를 MNO로 하여 MVNO시장에 진입하여 이동통신 이용자들을 대상으로 서비스를 개시하였다. 국내에서도 MVNO 제도가 도입될경우 BT와 같은 유선사업자들이 시장에 진입할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 따라서 본 고에서는 국내의 유선사업자들이 MVNO로서 국내 이동통신시장에 진입할 수 있는 제도적 방안을 검토하였다.

Analysis of Critical Time Headway and Capacity for Freeway Merging Area (고속도로 합류부 임계차두간격 및 용량 산정에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of the paper is to analyze the traffic characteristics for freeway merging area. Freeway merging area is different from basic section due to ramp vehicles. Therefore, to understand the traffic characteristics of (leeway merging area, this study focused on two factors including critical time headway required in merging maneuver and maximum possible merging volume. In this paper, new model that adopts critical time headway instead of critical time gap in calculating the maximum possible merging volume based on probability function was developed In previous studies, for calculating the maximum possible merging volume, it was considered that merging vehicles could merge freely if a given time gap was greater than the critical time gap. Also, the critical time gap was used as the same value in all traffic flow conditions. But, a time gap required in merging maneuver could be changed, even to the same driver, because difference of relative speed varies in different traffic flow conditions. So, in some cases, the critical time gap could be insufficient value in merging maneuver. Therefore, in this study. a calculating procedure for critical time headway in all traffic flow conditions was presented. Also, the maximum possible merging volume and capacity for freeway merging area were calculated by using the previously found critical time headway.

Model Development Determining Probabilistic Ramp Merge Capacity Including Forced Merge Type (강제합류 형태를 포함한 확률적 연결로 합류용량 산정 모형 개발)

  • Over the decades, a lot of studies have dealt with the traffic characteristics and phenomena at a merging area. However, relatively few analytical techniques have been developed to evaluate the traffic flow at the area and, especially, the ramp merging capacity has rarely been. This study focused on the merging behaviors that were characterized by the relationship between the shoulder lane flow and the on-ramp flow, and modeled these behaviors to determine ramp merge capacity by using gap acceptance theory. In the process of building the model, both an ideal mergence and a forced mergence were considered when ramp-merging vehicles entered the gap provided by the flow of the shoulder lane. In addition, the model for the critical gap was proposed because the critical gap was the most influential factor to determine merging capacity in the developed models. The developed models showed that the merging capacity value was on the increase as the critical gap decreased and the shoulder lane volume increased. This study has a meaning of modeling the merging behaviors including the forced merging type to determine ramp merging capacity more precisely. The findings of this study would help analyze traffic phenomena and understand traffic behaviors at a merging area, and might be applicable to decide the primary parameters of on-ramp control by considering the effects of ramp merging flow.

  • Many countries in the world introduced MVNO regulations to improve the competitiveness in mobile networks. Fixed operator in U.K. like British Telecom (BT) started MVNO business with Mobile Network Operator (O2) on October 1, 2002. For Korean fixed operator such as Dacom, Hanaro Telecom, Korea Telecom (KT), and Onse Telecom are focusing on MVNO market. Thus, this paper suggests possible regulation plans for mobile communication industry in Korea to enter the mobile market successfully.

The Effect of Single-Entry Metering and Platoon Metering on Mainstream under the Same Metering Rate with Pre-timed Metering (정주기식 동일 미터링율 제어에서 차량진입방식에 따른 효과분석)

  • Ramp metering control is the most representative strategy of uninterrupted flow control and management system. Ramp metering is to adjust vehicles entering an expressway in such a way that expressway mainline maintains flow stability by regulating ramp vehicles. The effect of two metering strategies, single-entry metering and platoon metering, on mainstream under the same metering rate with pre-timed metering are analyzed by micro-simulation. Platoon metering shows lower performance than single-entry metering under the same metering rate in terms of speed, density, and delay, causes earlier breakdown than single-entry metering. It indicates that the selection of metering type has critical importance as the flow of mainline is high.
