A Study on Art-Education as a Modern Idea and F. L. Wright's Romantic Educational Thoughts -Focused on the Romantic Educational Thoughts as a Dualistic Monism- (근대적(近代的) 개념(槪念)의 예술(藝術)-교육(敎育)과 F. L. 라이트의 낭만적(浪漫的) 진보주의(進步主義) 교육사상(敎育思想)에 관한 연구(硏究) -이원적 일원론(一元論)으로서의 낭만적 교육 사상을 중심으로-)

  • This study researched the art-educational thoughts as a modern idea influenced with the social and philosophical transitions in the 19th century. Moreover, this study focused on Frank Lloyd Wright's educational thoughts, because those educational revolutions had appeared as one of the results that Western society's character was rapidly changed by those revolutions, so called, Industrial Revolution, American and French Revolution, and Cultural Revolution of Romanticism, from late 18th century, and eventually because that revolutionary educational ideas had closely and basically many relations with Wright's thought. As a result, even though Wright's education such an apprenticeship was a traditional shape, which was not the old-fashioned educational method discipling to the skillful man, but against the existing education through the self-learning from experiences in nature. That is similar to transcendentalists such as Emerson who searched for having an inspiration in Nature. Namely, Wright himself had struggled against the existing dualistic educational concepts through Wright's monistic thoughts on art-education including architecture based on not naturalism but the philosophy of nature by romantic idealistic philosophers such as Shelling, Fickle, Kant, Hegel including with his Master, Sullivan, and by revolutionary educators such as Freobel, Ruskin, Dewey, and above all by his Unitarian doctrine. However, Wright's thoughts was at that time so radical, and as Wright himself acknowledged that, 'because the philosophy back of it, of course, as you know, is midway I guess between East and West', such all philosophical objects to influence on Wright were so abstruse idea which is usually called 'Romantic' or 'Mystic' that is mingled with East's and West's essence. That is, because Wright himself catched that the theories and methods of the art-educational thoughts would not be easily perceived, and he judged that in a word as a character which could not be taught. After all, Wright's romantic progressivist art-educational thoughts have not been perceived, disseminated in general and widely.

The Formation Process of Nature-Study in U.S. and Its Implication for Science Education (미국 Nature-Study 형성 과정과 과학교육에의 시사점)

  • This study purposes to historical approach the formation process of Nature-Study, and to re-evaluate its definition and direction at present. The idea of Nature-Study originated from Campanella, Ratke and Comenius, who emphasized real things. The idea developed through Object Lessons of Sheldon, the Natural History of Agassiz, and Progressivism of Parker. They acted as the main contributors who evolved the idea of Nature-Study and its core fields that involve: 'studying with real things' in Object Lessons which brought the methodical aspects to the idea, 'studying with nature' from Natural History that enhanced the content characteristics and 'learner-centered education' from Progressivism, which impacted the philosophical aspects. Straight (a fellow student of Agassiz) was a teacher for Sheldon Oswego normal school and Parker's Cook County normal school, who synthesized the fields together and paved the way for the formation of Nature-Study. Jackman of Cook Country normal school established Nature-Study as a school curriculum and Bailey and Comstock of Cornell University formed the American Nature-Study Society and as a result, Nature-Study started to gain popularity. However, many educators increasingly rejected Nature-Study as a unifying topic, and preferred the use of textbooks rather than firsthand experiences. This hindered the nature-study movement and it declined since the 1920s. But today, the Nature-study idea can play a huge role in developing science education, inclusive education centered nature, self-initiated retrieval, sympathy with nature and character building of students.

  • The concept of 'utopia' in Korea was formed in the early 20th century. 'There isn't in this world but good world' could be found using science and it was an ideal place for science to realize in the 1900s of Korea. Utopia was emphasized as an ideal world of fantasy in the 1920s. It was an ideological world wherein socialism was realized by a purposeful science. Utopia, conversely, was the history of scientific socialism defined as past example of communism that could not be implemented but was fancied. There were works suggesting that it was a dark dystopia such as Society after 800,000 years written by H.G. Wells or Artificial Worker by Young-hee Pak, but there were implied at the will of utopia.

Life and Ideology of Jeong, Yeo Rip - Focused on Antagonistic Propensity to Zhu-xi's Ideology (정여립(鄭汝立)의 생애와 사상 - 반주자학적 성향을 중심으로 -)

  • This year of 2009 is the 420th anniversary for the high treason case in the year of ox (year 1589). Until now, there is an endless discussion still progressing about Jeong, Yeo Rip. The evaluation of such individual varies widely according to the viewpoint of each individual. However, the problem is that such confusion or issue is exaggerated under the pretense of his idea's progressivity. The true identity and ideology of Jeong, Yeo Rip will become clear once we review such fact from the origin. This article considered abstract and ideological evaluation of occasion and took its approach thoroughly based on the historical research of literature. Until now, some parts academic world have denied and argued about the fabrication about every details of Jeong, Yeo Rip and event of high treason in the year of ox while accepting the habitual sentence spoken by such individual without a doubt. They have exaggerated Jeong, Yeo Rip as an 'Incompleted Revolutionist' or 'Individual of Revolutionary Ideology'. However, it is imprecise to speak about the terminology of 'Revolutionary'. His ideology is simply elucidating the principal of original Confucianism or a new interpretation of the principle of Confucianism. Jeong, Yeo Rip wanted to contradict the system of national school based on the Zhu-xi's ideology and returned to the principle of original Confucianism. His idea of utopia based on the Confucianism arouse out of the intention of reviving the spirit of original Confucianism. His antagonistic propensity to Zhu-xi's ideology or political idea has transcended the principle of justification based on Sung Confucianism and was also logical and realistic. He was forced on to the deadly circumstance since the society of Joseon Dynasty couldn't accept such logical and progressive idea and deemed him to be nothing more than a disturbing element for the society.

Adult Educational Idea of R. H. Tawney among Traditions of Workers' Education Movement (노동자교육운동의 흐름을 통해서 본 토니의 성인교육사상)

  • The purpose of this study is to illustrate Richard Henry Tawney's idea of adult education among traditions of workers' education movement. The workers' education movement can be categorized into two streams. One tradition regards as the workers' education as a part of liberal education. The other tradition regards as it as a tool for social transformation. The former, which emphasizes the importance of liberal education in workers' education, had been developed in connection with the University Extension in England, and had a practical influence through the 'Workers' Educational Association(WEA)' organized by Mansbridge and other intellectuals. The latter, which emphasizes the social transformational function of education, conducted education in a form that is not clearly distinguished from propaganda, through the 'National Council of Labour College(NCLC)'. Tawney demonstrates the idea of adult education that synthesizes these two traditions, and this synthesization is related to his idea on equality. Tawney pursued socialism through democratic and non-violent way. He thought that adult education could contribute to the construction of socialism while at the same time conducting adult education based on liberal education. In other words, adult education based on liberal education, through rational understanding and discussion of the world, can contribute to social transformation. Tawney's idea of adult education provides practical implications for educationalists and educators who want progressive social change, and theoretically enriches educational research on the relationship between social transformation and education.

A Logical Critique of Criticism and Anticriticism of Lee Yeung-Hi (리영희 비판과 반비판의 논리적 비판: '북한맹.시장맹' 논쟁을 중심으로)

  • Lee Yeung-Hi is one of the most influential journalist in the modern history of Korea. Nevertheless, the judgement about him has been parallelized by opposite sides. He is called 'the Master of ideology', while the other calls him 'the culprit of theorization'. This thesis deduced the contemporary meaning of person Lee Yeung-Hi in order to promote communication for both sides. I compared their logical arguments and pointed out the error they missed. Also, I clarified that the criticism and anticriticism for Lee Young-Hi in the fields of both journalism and academia have fallacies, such as the fallacy of straw man, and the fallacy of question-begging. I criticized their arguments through the view of 'struggling to seek truth', which is the core value of Lee Yeung-Hi's thought. The necessity of communication between advocators and it's critics is due to the condition of Korean Journalism. Korean Journalism does not have much space to accept Lee Young-Hi in only one side. Paradoxically, the contemporary meaning of the truth that Journalist Lee Young-Hi had sought is profound and deep because of the condition where Korean Journalism is being dominated by political parallelism.

자판기의 변천과 퓨젼화 경향

  • 사회생활을 하는 사람이라면 하루에 꼭 한번 정도는 하는 일이 있다. 출퇴근, 회의, 그리고 자판기 이용이 그것이다. 이른아침 출근을 위해 지하철 무인 패스 판매기를 이용하고 출근해서는 나른한 오후시간을 깨우기위해 으례 커피자판기를 이용하기 일수이고 여가시간을 이용해서는 친구들과 가벼운 스티커 사진촬영을 하는 등 우리의 자판기 이용 문화는 이미 현대인 너무나도 보편화되고 친숙해져버린 생활의 한 단면이 되어버렸다. 그렇다면 자판기는 언제쯤 인간의 일상사 속에 등장하기 시작했을까? 놀랍게도 자판기의 기원은 기원전 215년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 당시 이집트 사원에서 `성수(聖水)`를 판매하기 위해 만들어졌던 동전식 조작장치가 최초의 자판기라는게 정설로 받아들여온 사실로서 동전을 넣으면 투입된 동전이 받치고 있던 접시가 기울어져 그 기울기가 원래대로 돌아올 때까지 출구로 물이 나오는 원리를 이용한 것이다. 누가 만든것인지는 명확히 밝혀지지 않았으나 확실한 것은 자판기의 역사가 이미 기원전으로 거슬러 올라가고 인간생활에 뿌리내린 역사가 깊다는 것이다. 아무튼 이렇게 자판기가 나타난 이래로 17세기에 키산드리아 과학자 헤론이 쓴 책이 발견되기 이전까지 자판기는 잊혀진 발명품이었다. 그러나 그 책의 발견과 함께 사람들은 옛문헌 속의 발명품의 실용성에 관심을 기울이기 시작했고 차츰 영국의 선술집과 여관 담배 자판기가 등장하기 시작했으며 자판기는 식민지까지 보급될 정도로 선풍적인 인기를 끌었다. 19세기에 들어서는 담배 이외의 물건을 판매할 수 있는 자판기에 관심을 두기 시작했고, 자유주의 사상이 풍미하던 시절, 영국에서 나타난 금서(禁書)자판기에서부터 상업문화가 발달한 미국의 껌볼 자판기에 이르기까지 자판기는 점차로 그 영역을 넓혀갔고 또한 발전해 왔던 것이다. 그러나 자동판매기의 이러한 급속한 발전과 소비영역에서 역량의 강화는 비단 단순한 소비패턴의 변화에서 기인하는 것이라고는 보기 어렵다. 이는 노동집약적 산업구조에서 기술집약적 산업사회로의 전환에 따른 대량생산, 대량소비, 소비패턴 변화 등의 마케팅 환경의 변화에 따라 새로운 유통구조의 출현이 요망되었기 때문이었다. 따라서 슈퍼마켓, 쇼핑센터 등의 새로운 유통구조의 출현 외에도 인건비의 상승, 장소의 제한 및 구입의 편리성 등에 따라 무인 자동판매기의 등장은 필연적이었다고 볼수 있다. 이후 자판기의 판매상품의 범위는 더욱 넓어졌고 컵라면, 인형, 마음에 드는 음악만을 골라담는 CD,휴지,구두광택기,사진스티커,콘돔,장난감,담배,여행용품,스낵,아이스크림 등등 소액권과 손가락만 있으면 살 수 있는 물건의 가짓수는 헤아리기 어려울 정도가 되었으며, 그만큼 유통혁신의 기구로서 산업에 미치는 영향 역시 증대되고 있으며, 이러한 경향은 21세기 정보화,첨단화 경향에 발맞추어 더욱 진보된 형태로 발전해오고 있다.

Review of context & meaning of Jeongjeonje by Yi Hang-no (화서(華西) 이항노(李恒老)의 정전제(井田制) 주장과 그 함의(含意))

  • Until now, I guess, many scholars misunderstood the characteristic of economic awareness of Yi Hang-no as if it was a modern nationalism or radicalism against Japanese anti-Korean insistences. But I think these opinions are out of historical attitude. So to understand Yi's economic awareness correctly, I think, We should focus on the traditional Confucian thought system at that time. As one method to reach the goal, I focused on the word, Jeong-jeon-je: Oriental equal land system. Yi Hang-no put the importance on Jeong-jeon-je to make utopia he dreamed of. Yi thought Jeong-jeon-je is the basis of equal society and strong state. Also Yi thought a moral society would be achieved by Jeong-jeon-je because the equal land system, so called Jeong-jeon-je provide peasants with equal lands, so it makes peasants stable in economic situation. Especially, Yi Hang-no put importance on that Jeong-jeon-je would raise moral consciousness of people because equal economic condition makes people wealthy, so people would be good men naturally. Yi Hang-no explain it in basis of Insim-Dosim-seol: a theory of two minds bad & good to be. Yi Hang-no thought equal economic condition is the basis of making people moral being. He thought Jeong-jeon-je was a basis of the condition. Reversely, Yi thought Western insists of trade was the beginning of making people fight for individual benefit, so it produces devil selfishness out of human mind. That was the reason that Yi Hang-no opposed the trade with Western Powers. Eventually Yi's assertion of embargo came out of his Insim-Dosim-seol. In this context, Yi's Jeong-jeon-je was insisted as a method to raise human moral consciousness.

A Study on Hermann Fürst Pücker-Muskau's landscape gardening theory focused on its development process and meanings (헤르만 F. 폰 퓌클러-무스카우(Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau)의 풍경식 정원론의 형성과정과 의미에 관한 연구)

  • Herman $F{\ddot{u}}rst\;P{\ddot{u}}ckler-Muskau$ is one of important figures in German landscape architecture who designed both Muskau Park and Branitz Park and published garden book Andeutungen ${\ddot{u}}ber$ Landschaftgartenerei (Hints on Landscape Gardening) in 1834. He was a German nobleman who governed Muskau estates while working as both a writer and a landscape gardener. German landscape gardening was grounded on Romanticism, which was represented in diverse ways such as the reconciliation between man and nature, the liberation of reason, and the pursuit of liberty. The intellectuals came to have an interest on landscape gardening since the garden carried the cultural connotation such as the idealized epitome of nature. This study is to investigate how his idea of landscape gardening had been developed through his personal life and social background and to find out his landscape gardening theory and its unique gardening techniques. Finally, the inventive aspect of his garden theory and contemporary significances in practices were discussed. $P{\ddot{u}}cklers^{\prime}$ personal experience and social background provide us to understand the idea of garden. First, there was a mixture between reality and fantasy in his garden theory. It was due to the influence of Romanticism and literary garden. Second, his gardening mentality and technique were influenced by the late 18th century English garden practices, which emphasized the expressive aspects. Third, $P{\ddot{u}}cklers^{\prime}$ inner disposition and personal experience were represented in his garden design. Fourth, the intention of creating landscape garden for the local people might be a self realization of his contradictory characters between falling nobleman and liberal social leader. The significant value of $P{\ddot{u}}ckler^{\prime}s$ garden idea might be closely related in the dual nature of humanistic garden tradition and garden practice for social agenda. Therefore, his garden idea pursued of the comprehensive landscape strategies toward ideal communities and ethical spirits while concerning ecological, social, economic sustainable development of the region. Furthermore, his landscape gardening aims at the total landscape encompassing garden to region as well as the Gesamtkunst combing the beautiful with the useful. $P{\ddot{u}}ckler^{\prime}s$ holistic attitude gives us fresh insights and new directions to contemporary landscape theory and practice.
