  • This paper deals with the effect of mass-spring-mass resonance that is a characteristics of the multi-layered panels in order to enhance sound insulation performance. From theoretical and experimental investigation, it is evident that tuning mass-spring-mass resonance by controlling elastic modulus of the core materials is very important to improve the STC value without increasing the weight of panels, resulting in enhancing STC value more than 10 dB.

  • In this work, we propose to employ magnetostrictive sensors to develop a new non-contacting modal testing method. Specific applications are made in the modal testing of a beam in bending. The role of bias magnetic fields in measuring bending waves is addressed and an approximate analysis to explain the principle to measure bending signals is carried out. The measured modal data by the present method agree well with those by conventional methods using accelerometers.

  • This study simulated strong ground motion waveforms in the southern Korean Peninsula, based on the physical earthquake modeling of the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) BroadBand Platform (BBP). Characteristics of intensity attenuation were investigated for M 6.0-7.0 events, incorporating the site effects. The SCEC BBP is software generates broadband (0-10 Hz) ground-motion waveforms for earthquake scenarios. Among five available modeling methods in the v16.5 platform, we used the Song Model. Approximately 50 earthquake scenarios each were simulated for M 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0 events. Representative metrics such as peak ground acceleration (PGA) and peak ground velocity (PGV) were obtained from the synthetic waveforms that were simulated before and after the consideration of site effects (VS30). They were then empirically converted to distribution of instrumental intensity. The intensity that considers the site effects is amplified at low rather than high VS30 zones.

  • A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beams and tower structures, with irregular cross sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by Kim, D. H. in 1974. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the special orthotropic plates on elastic foundation with free boundaries is presented. Such plates represent the concrete highway slab and hybrid composite pavement on bridges. Any method may be used to obtain the deflection influence surfaces needed for this vibration analysis. Finite difference method is used for this purpose, in this paper. The influence of the modulus of the foundation and the aspect ratio of the plate on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied. The effect of neglecting the mass of the plates on the natural frequency, as the ratio of the point mass/masses to the plate mass increases, is also studied, in deep.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to determine the dynamic optimal shapes of simple beam-columns with the constant volume. The parabolic function is chosen as the variable equation for the depth of regular polygon cross-section. The ordinary differential equation including the effect of axial load is applied to calculate the natural frequencies. The Runge-Kutta and Regula-Falsi methods are used to integrate the differential equation and compute the frequencies, respectively. Then the dynamic optimal shape whose lowest natural frequency is highest is determined by reading the critical value of the frequency versus section ratio curve plotted by the frequency data. In the numerical examples, the simple beam-columns are analysed and the numerical results of this study are shown in tables and figures.

  • Mathematical modeling and vibration control of a tiltrotor aircraft composite wing-rotor system are investigated in this study. A wing-mounted rotor can be tilted from the vertical position to a horizontal one, and vice versa. Effect of vibration control of the wing-rotor system via piezoelectricity is studied as a function of tilt angle, ply angle of composite wing and rotor's spin speed. Composite wing is modeled as a thin-walled box beam having a circumferentially uniform stiffness configuration that produces elastic coupling between flap-lag and between extension-twist behavior. Numerical simulations are provided and pertinent conclusions are outlined.

  • The present study aims at investigating the effectiveness of a new passive cavity flow control technique, sub-cavity. The characteristics of cavity flow oscillation with the device are compared with those with other control techniques tested previously, including a triangular bump and blowing jet. In the computation, the three-dimensional, unsteady Navier-Stokes equations governing the supersonic cavity flow are solved based on an implicit finite volume scheme spatially and multi-stage Runge-Kutta scheme temporally. Large eddy simulation (LES) is carried out to properly predict the turbulent features of cavity flow. The present results show that the pressure oscillation near the downstream edge dominates overall time-dependent cavity pressure variations, and the amplitude of the pressure oscillation can be reduced in the presence of a sub-cavity.
