  • Global solar radiation was calculated in this research using ground-base measurement data, meteorological satellite data, and GWNU (Gangneung-Wonju National University) solar radiation model. We also analyzed the accuracy of the GWNU model by comparing the observed solar radiation according to the total cloud cover. Our research was based on the global solar radiation of the GWNU radiation site in 2012, observation data such as temperature and pressure, humidity, aerosol, total ozone amount data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) sensor, and Skyview data used for evaluation of cloud mask and total cloud cover. On a clear day when the total cloud cover was 0 tenth, the calculated global solar radiations using the GWNU model had a high correlation coefficient of 0.98 compared with the observed solar radiation, but root mean square error (RMSE) was relatively high, i.e., $36.62Wm^{-2}$. The Skyview equipment was unable to determine the meteorological condition such as thin clouds, mist, and haze. On a cloudy day, regression equations were used for the radiation model to correct the effect of clouds. The correlation coefficient was 0.92, but the RMSE was high, i.e., $99.50Wm^{-2}$. For more accurate analysis, additional analysis of various elements including shielding of the direct radiation component and cloud optical thickness is required. The results of this study can be useful in the area where the global solar radiation is not observed by calculating the global solar radiation per minute or time.

  • The measured solar radiation incident on tilted surfaces by all directions has been widely used as important solar radiation data in installing photovoltaic modules. To maximize the incident beam radiation, the slope, which is the angle between the plane of the surface in question and the horizontal, an4 the solar azimuth angles are needed for these solar photovoltaic systems. This is because the performance of the solar photovoltaic systems is much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing those factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment has been performed in this research to obtain the an91e of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. The results obtained in this research could be used in installing optimal photovoltaic modules.

  • Reclaimed lands, expected as high-tech export horticultural complex, have unusual light environments due to sea fog. For adequate greenhouse design at reclaimed land, spatial light distributions in greenhouse should be required considering diffusive and direct lights. The objectives of this study were to analyze light environments and estimate spatial light distributions in greenhouse at reclaimed land by 3D greenhouse models. Total and diffusive lights were compared between reclaimed land and inland. For verification of the 3D greenhouse models, spatial light distributions and measured light intensities in greenhouse were compared with the estimated ones. Light environments at reclaimed land showed a higher diffusive irradiation than at inland, especially near sunrise and sunset. The estimated spatial light distributions in greenhouse showed good agreements with the measured ones. By using this method, we could estimate the average light intensity with time and spatial light distributions in greenhouse at specific outside light conditions. This result will be useful for analysis of light environments but also estimation of crop light inception in greenhouse at reclaimed land.

  • Although many researches of simulation programs to predict climate under the current climate change have been performed but more detailed studies of weather date which might influence the load of buildings seem insufficient. In this study, in Incheon are analyzed IES (Integrated Environmental Solutions)6.0, Ecotect 2010, EnergyPlus v4.0's IWEC file and ISO-TRY, the Korean standard weather data provided by the Korean Solar Energy Society for direct normal radiation which is used in load calculation programs. The results show that the radiation of the programs is the same as that of direct normal radiation per month but has a mere difference, compared with the radiation per hour and IWEC has also 77.12% when compared with ISO-TRY, meaning that it could affect load values of buildings when applied to them. And in case of ISO-TRY, it could be judged that the application of test reference year applied by the data measured has higher reliability than IWEC file.

  • The major purpose of this paper is to develop an uncertainty estimate for the calibration of thermopile instruments used to measure solar radiation parameters. We briefly describe the solar radiation parameters most often measured, instrumentation, reference standards, and calibration techniques. The bulk of the paper describes elemental sources of error and their magnitude. We then apply a standard error analysis methodology to combine these elemental error estimates into a statement of total uncertainty for the instrument calibration factor. Our results allow one to evaluate the accuracy of a radiometric measurement using thermopile instrumentation in the light of the application, such as engineering test evaluation or for validation of theoretical models.

  • Spatial interpolation has become a common procedure in converting temperature forecasts and observations at irregular points for use in regional scale ecosystem modeling and the model based decision support systems for resource management. Neglection of terrain effects in most spatial interpolations for short term temperatures may cause erroneous results in mountainous regions, where the observation network hardly covers full features of the complicated terrain. A spatial interpolation model for daytime hourly temperature was formulated based on error analysis of unsampled site with respect to the site topography. The model has a solar irradiance correction scheme in addition to the common backbone of the lapse rate - corrected inverse distance weighting. The solar irradiance scheme calculates the direct, diffuse and reflected components of shortwave radiation over any surfaces based on the sun-slope geometry and compares the sum with that over a reference surface. The deviation from the reference radiation is used to calculate the temperature correction term by an empirical conversion formula between the solar energy and the air temperature on any sloped surfaces at an hourly time scale, which can be prepared seasonally for each land cover type. When this model was applied to a 14 km by 22 km mountainous region at a 10 m horizontal resolution, the estimated hourly temperature surfaces showed a better agreement with the observed distribution than those by a conventional method.

  • Direct and diffuse components of solar radiation were measured inside and outside a single-span plastic greenhouse. To analyze the direct solar radiation inside the plastic greenhouse, the cross-section of the greenhouse was assumed to be circular. Then the direct solar radiation transmitted into the greenhouse was calculated theoretically, and compared with the experimental measurements. The results are summarized as follows: (1) The transmissivities of total solar radiation were about 65% on cloudy days and 50% on clear days. For cloudy days, the transmissivity of the total solar radiation was regarded as the transmissivity of sky diffuse radiation. (2) The ratio of the inside effective scattered component of direct solar radiation to the diffuse radiation was 60-65%. (3) It appeared that the seasonal variation of the transmissivity of total solar radiation was adversely affected by the transmissivity of direct solar radiation and the effective scattered coefficient. But the effect of the transmissivity of direct solar radiation was dominant factor. (4) Computer simulation showed that the inside direct solar radiation was decreased as the floor of the plastic greenhouse was higher. (5) The predicted value of the inside direct solar radiation was 3.3% to 29.0% higher than the measured value.

  • This paper describes the procedure of the basic design and transient variation of performance for a 1MWe large scale solar thermal power plant system (STPPS) by using the commercial software tool of TRNSYS. In order to simulate the transient variation of STPPS's performance, the basic design of STPPS are preceded by using the THERMOFLEX, Three different days of DNI weather data of Daejeon in 2005 are used to calculate the performance. For a high DNI data values, the general ing power of 1.1 MWe and flow rate of 1.4kg/s at $804W/m^2$ are good agreement with the basic design value of 1.0 MWe, 1.36 kg/s at $800 /m^2$. Using the other weather data of low and sudden decreasing DNI values, the results show that the output power and flow rate follow well the DNI variation. Based on the results, it is allowed to use the Program to estimate the performance of STPPS for variety of DNI data.

  • The Knowledge of the solar radiation components are essential for modeling many solar energy systems. This is particularly the case for applications that concentrate the incident energy to attain high thermodynamic efficiency achievable only at the higher temperatures. In order to estimate the performance of concentrating thermal systems, it is necessary to know the intensity of the beam radiation, as only this component can be concentrated. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting solar radiation component data since August, 2002. KIER's component data will be extensively used by concentrating system users or designers as well as by research institutes. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily diffuse radiation on the horizontal surface is $1,458cal/m^2$ and daily direct radiation on the horizontal surface is $1,632cal/m^2$ for all over the 16 areas in Korea.
