In this investigation, results of laboratory tests on four reinforced concrete flat plate interior connections with elongated rectangular column support which has been used widely in tall residential buildings are presented. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an effect of column aspect ratio (${\beta}_c={c_1}/{c_2}$=side length ratio of column section in the direction of lateral loading $(c_1)$ to the direction of perpendicular to $c_1$) on the hysteretic behavior under earthquake type loading. The aspect ratio of column section was taken as $0.5{\sim}3\;(c_1/c_2=1/2,\;1/1,\;2/1,\;3/1)$ and the column perimeter was held constant at 1200mm in order to achieve nominal vertical shear strength $(V_c)$ uniformly. Other design parameters such as flexural reinforcement ratio $(\rho)$ of the slab and concrete strength$(f_{ck})$ was kept constant as ${\rho}=1.0%$ and $f_{ck}=40MPa$, respectively. Gravity shear load $(V_g)$ was applied by 30 percent of nominal vertical shear strength $(0.3V_o)$ of the specimen. Experimental observations on punching failure pattern, peak lateral-load and story drift ratio at punching failure, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation in the hysteresis loop, and steel and concrete strain distributions near the column support were examined and discussed in accordance with different column aspect ratio. Eccentric shear stress model of ACI 318-05 was evaluated with experimental results. A fraction of transferring moment by shear and flexure in the design code was analyzed based on the test results.

This study is an experimental comparison on the fact that the sinusoidal load, which has been used so far in the laboratory cyclic test, which is an important part of the liquefaction triggering study, is somewhat different from the phenomenon that causes the soil liquefaction during the earthquake loading. To this end, this study proposes a new type of combined sinusoidal load and compares it with experimental results to load the conventional sine wave. In the comparison, the shaking table tests were carried out and the sample in the tests was remolded with the relative density of 40%, which is a condition where liquefaction is easy to occur. Firstly, the conventional cyclic test was carried out under the condition that with the amplitude of sine wave was 0.3 g. Additionally, 3 types of tests were performed using the combination loads made up with 0.03 g sinusoidal load and 0.3g sinusoidal load. At that time, the loading time for the first sinusoidal load were changed with 5 seconds, 10 seconds, and 15 seconds. As a result, the test with the conventional sine wave and the test with the first sinusoidal loading for 5 seconds showed that the change of the pore water pressure gradually increased. But in the tests with the combined sinusoidal load which changed the first sinusoidal loading time with 10 and 15 seconds, it was found that the pore water pressure suddenly rose at a certain instant and liquefaction occurs. From the experimental comparison, it is judged that it is appropriate that the time of the first sine wave is over 10 seconds at the proposed combined load for the soil condition with relative density 40%.
Laboratory dynamic tests are carried out to assess the liquefaction potential of saturated sands in most countries. However, simple results such as the maximum cyclic shear stress and the number of cycles at initial liquefaction are used in the experimental assessment of liquefaction potential, even though various results can be obtained from the dynamic test. In addition, it seemed to be inefficient because more than three dynamic tests with different stress ratio have to be carried out to draw a liquefaction resistance experimental curve. To improve the present assessment method fur liquefaction potential, a new critical resistible characteristic far soil liquefaction is proposed and verified through conventional cyclic triaxial tests with Jumunjin sand. In the proposed method, various experimental data such as effective stress path, stress-strain relationship, and the change of excess pore water pressure can be used in the determination of cumulative plastic shear strains at every 1/4 cycle. Especially, the critical cumulative plastic shear strain to initiate liquefaction can be defined in a specific point called a phase change point in the effective stress path and it can be calculated from a hysteric curve of stress-strain relationship up to this point. Through this research, it is found that the proposed cumulative plastic shear strain can express the dissipated energy to resist dynamic loads and consider the realistic soil dynamic behavior of saturated sands reasonably. It is also found that the critical plastic shear strain can be used as a registible index of soils to represent the critical soil dynamic state, because it seems to include no effect of large deformation.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the flexural tensile strength of unreinforced concrete masonry wall to ensure the structural safety in out-of-plane behaviors under the wind or earthquake loads. Flexural tensile strength of unreinforced concrete masonry wall has been obtained from the full scale tests of total 327 specimens and the statistical analysis are performed for each of the cases. The flexural tensile strength derived from experiments is classified as 13 groups according to masorny units, mortar ingredients, and the direction of tensile stresses and the mean tensile strength and the variable coefficient are obtained for each case. The uniform and concentrated transverse loads have been applied over the face of the wall specimens. The ultimate mean flexural tensile strengths are distributed from 1,564 kPa to 363 kPa according to masonry units, mortar ingredients, and other factors. The allowable flexural tension stress criteria will be established based on the mean flexural tensile strengths in the future.
Geological achievements of the 20th century revolutionized our views about geological understanding and concept. A good example is the concept of continental drift suggested early in the 20th century and later explained in terms of seafloor spreading and plate tectonics. Our understanding of the compositions of materials forming earth has also improved during the20th century. Radio and stable isotopes together with biostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy allow us to interpret the evolution of sedimentary basins in terms of plate movement and sedimentation processes. The Deep Sea Drilling Project initiated in 1960s and continued as the Ocean Drilling Project in 1980s is one of the most successful international research observations, and new developments in computational techniques have provided a wholly new view about the interior of the earth. Most of the geological features and phenomena observed in deep sea and around continental margins are now explained in terms of global tectonic processes such as superplumes flowing up from the interior of our planet and interacting with such as Rodinia Pannotia and Nena back in the Precambrian time. The space explorations which began in the late 1950s opened up a new path to astrogeology, astrobiology, and astropaleontology. The impact theory rooted in the discovery of iridium and associated phenomena in 1980s revived Cuvier's catastrophism as a possible explanation for the extinctions of biotas found in the geological record of this planet. Due to the geological achievements made in the 20th century, we now have a better understanding of geologic times and processes that were too long to be grasped by human records.

Recently, bridge structures has progressed the researches about seismic performance by occurrence of earthquake increased compared with the past. In the substructure of bridge, confining transverse reinforcement has arranged in plastic hinge region to resist the lateral load which increased the lateral confining effect. Columns are increased the seismic performance through secure of the stiffness and ductility The design specification for arrangement of confining transverse reinforcement same specification of domestic and international that suggested to solid reinforced concrete column(RC). This design specification have limits for Internally Confined Hollow RC(ICH RC) column because of different the component and performance characteristics of column. In this paper suggested the modified equation for economics and rational design through investigation of displacement ductility when applied the existing specification at the steel composite hollow RC column.
A study of the effects of dynamic pile-soil-structure interactions on the response of super- structures, supported by group piles, are presented in this paper. The dynamic impedance functions of single pile generated by soil-pile interactions are obtained and compared among others using the methods proposed by Novak, Gazetas, and Kuhlemeyer, and using the equivalent cantilever method. Group pile effects are also considered by the following approaches : neglecting interaction effects : group efficiency ratio concept : static interaction approach . and dynamic interaction approach. The responses of a nuclear containment structure are obtained by using the elastic half-space analysis, based on the impedance functions mentioned above. Main conclusions drawn from this study are as follows : 1. The numerical results of the impedance functions calculated by each method were quite different : the Novak's was the smallest, and the Kuhlemeyer's the highest. Considering group effects, similar values in each approach were obtained for the stiffness : the difference was very big for the damping. 2. The top displacement of the structure was reduced by 20% or more by pile installations. However, the base shear force, the base moment, and the resonance frequency were increased by more than two times due to stiffening effect of the ground by pile installations. 3. Whether frequency dependant impedence functions or frequency independant functions were used, the responses of the structure were not so much affected by the choice of the impedance functions. 4. The reduction effect of the top displacement increased with the increase of the maximum ground acceleration.
The time and cost can be reduced when applying partial precast concrete to the stair system in comparison to the cast-in-place or precast method. Because the performance of staircase which is used for evacuation can be largely different from connection types of precast concrete member, we tried to know structural behavior and performance evaluation according to each type of stair joints by experimental study. In the cast-in-place rigid joint, much reinforcement is needed in the end portion because much stress is concentrated in the middle portion. Also, in the pin joint which is used in the connection point, the maximum stress occurs in the middle point, so not only the amount of re-bar is increased but also the serviceability is largely decreased. The bolt type of semi-rigid joints proposed in this study had been increased strength and serviceability which is similar to the rigid joints. Also, its ductility was shown about 0.7 times in comparison to the rigid type and was about 2.8 times for the pin joint type. According to the classification of joint in Eurocode, it can be considered that it is one of the semi-rigid joints which are in the semi-rigid-full strength, and the structural behavior can be expected by using a model which applied to stiffness value decreased by 40 percent.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the city of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea on November 15, 2017. Many sand volcanoes were observed on paddy fields, parks and roads. This phenomenon was the first to be observed as a sign of soil liquefaction in South Korea. In this study, two different kinds of ejected Pohang sands were collected from a liquefied paddy field. Those sands were reconstituted into loose and dense conditions and then a series of cyclic simple shear tests were conducted under confining stresses of 100 and 200 kPa. A real earthquake motion was also repetitively applied to the specimen. As a result of constant shear stress tests, the cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) of loose sand was 0.12-0.14, while the CRR value of dense sand was 0.17-0.21. It was shown that the relative density was more influencing factor on liquefaction resistance than the sand types and initial confining stress. When a real Pohang earthquake motion was repetitively applied to the specimen, a loose sand was liquefied at the second earthquake motion but the dense sand at the third earthquake motion.
Shear wave velocity (or shear modulus) is very important in the evaluation of seismic performance of a fill dam under an earthquake. A shear wave velocity profile can be determined by surface wave method such as HWAW and SASW methods but this profile has uncertainty caused by spatial variation of material property in a fill dam. This uncertainty in shear wave velocity profile could be considered using a coefficient of variation of material property in the reliability based analysis. In this paper, the possible 600 shear wave velocity profiles in the core and rockfill zone of fill dam were generated by the random shear wave velocity profile generation method, proposed by Hwang and Park, based on the field shear wave velocity profiles determined by the HWAW and SASW methods. And, through the statistical analysis of generated shear wave velocity profiles in the fill dam, the coefficient of variation (COV) of shear wave velocity with depth were evaluated for the core and rock filled zone of fill dam in Korea.
