Structural analysis for a large-scale fault in Maegok-dong, Ulsan, was carried out based on filed-works to investigate the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the fault as well as its Quaternary slip. As results, a series of repeated stratigraphy, minor faults, fracture zones, and deformation band clusters are observed over a distance of about 100 m in the first studied site consisting of sedimentary rocks, which may indicate the damage zone of a large-scale fault in this site. In the second site, mainly composed of granitic clastic rocks, a large-scale thrust fault is expected based on low-angle dipping faults showing branched and/or merged patterns. Age of the last slip on this fault was restrained as after 33,275 ± 355 yr BP based on radiocarbon dating for organic material included in the gouge zone. Dimension of fault damage zone, dominant sense of slip, and age of the slip event associated with the fault suggest that these structures have a close relationship with the Ulsan Fault and/or Yeonil Tectonic Line, which are well-known large-scale neotectonic structural features around the study area. Therefore, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the faults in detail based on structural geology and paleoseismology in order to ensure seismic and geologic stability of the buildings under construction, and to prevent geologic hazards in this area.

The BNWF (Beam on Nonlinear Winkler Foundation) model is one of the simplest idealizations for a pile embedded in soil as it ignores the continuity of the soil. This method is difficult to model the behavior of pile group foundation subjected to lateral loading. The limitation can be overcome with the utilization of the finite element method (FEM) or finite different method (FDM) to represent a pile element embedded in a soil medium. Both the ground and piles are modeled with soild elements. The solid elements, which do not have rotational degree of freedom, is not appropriate for modeling piles. It can be overcome by substantially increasing the number of elements, which can be prohibitive for 3D modeling. This paper used the beam element and rigid link incorporated in the OpenSees to model the pile. The accuracy of the model is validated through comparison with lateral load test and BNWF analysis. It is shown that the method can capture the measured behavior accurately. It is therefore recommended to be used in group pile analyses.

In this study, the shaking table tests were carried out on six types of non-structural elements installed on a full-scale two-story steel structure. The shaking table tests were performed for non-structural elements with and without seismic isolators. In this study, the seismic performance of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) specimens was tested and investigated. Non-seismic details were composed of conventional channel section steel beams, and the seismic isolators were composed of high damping rubber bearing (HDRB) and wire isolator. The input acceleration time histories were artificially generated to satisfy the requirements proposed by the ICC-ES AC156 code. Based on the test results, the damage and dynamic characteristics of the UPS with the seismic isolator were investigated in terms of the natural frequency, damping ratio, acceleration time history responses, dynamic amplification factors, and relative displacements. The results from the shaking table showed that the dynamic characteristics of the UPS including the acceleration response were significantly improved when using the seismic isolator.
This paper deals with development and dissipation of excess pore pressure induced by the cyclic load. Cyclic triaxial tests on reconstituted samples of weathered residual soils, which were widely used as construction materials in Korea, were performed. Test results showed that excess pore pressures developed under undrained condition increased with the increase of cyclic loads and confining pressures. And a new concept based on modified excess pore pressure ratio (MEPPR) was proposed for simply estimating excess pore pressures in terms of the number of cyclic load, irrespective of cyclic loads and confining pressures. Also, it was proposed that excess pore pressure ratio (EPPR) could be effectively utilized to estimate volumetric strains during dissipation which decreased as confining pressures increased. Consequently, concept and method to effectively estimate settlements under non-liquefied condition, induced by dynamic loads such as earthquake loads were evaluated based on laboratory test results for reconstituted weathered residual soils.
Conventional active surface wave measurements performed using a transient or continuous source are often limited in the maximum depth of penetration due to the difficulty of generating low-frequency energy with reasonably portable sources. This limitation may inhibit accurate seismic site response calculations because of the inability to define deeper subsurface structure. By measuring surface wave generated by passive sources including microtremors and cultural noise, it is possible to overcome this problem and develop soil stiffness profiles to much larger depth. Reliability of dispersion estimates from the passive surface wave measurements is critical to present reliable shear wave velocity profiles and can be improved by the measurements and analyses of passive surface waves based on correct understanding of systematic errors included in passive dispersion data. In this study, the systematic errors caused by poor wavenumber resolution and energy leakage into sidelobes in passive tests are mainly explored. Recommendations for reliable passive surface wave measurements and dispersion estimates are presented and illustrated at a site in San Jose, California, U.S.

In this study, a method predicting the displacement response of structures from the measured dynamic strain signal is proposed by using mode decomposition technique. Evaluation of bridge stability is normally focused on the bridge completed. However, dynamic loadings including wind and seismic loadings could be exerted to the bridge under construction. In order to examine the bridge stability against these dynamic loadings, the prediction of displacement response is very important to evaluate bridge stability. Because it may be not easy for the displacement response to be acquired directly on site, an indirect method to predict the displacement response is needed. Thus, as an alternative for predicting the displacement response indirectly, the conversion of the measured strain signal into the displacement response is suggested, while the measured strain signal can be obtained using fiber optic Bragg-grating (FBG) sensors. As previous studies on the prediction of displacement response by using the FBG sensors, the static displacement has been mainly predicted. For predicting the dynamic displacement, it has been known that the measured strain signal includes higher modes and then the predicted dynamic displacement can be inherently contaminated by broad-band noises. To overcome such problem, a mode decomposition technique was used. Mode decomposition technique estimates the displacement response of each mode with mode shape estimated to use POD from strain signal and with the measured strain signal decomposed into mode by EMD. This is a method estimating the total displacement response combined with the each displacement response about the major mode of the structure. In order to examine the mode decomposition technique suggested in this study model experiment was performed.

The goal of this study is to develop a realistic methodology for determination of the Life-Cycle Cost (LCC)-effective optimal seismic retrofit and maintenance strategy of deteriorating bridges. The proposed methodology is based on the concept of minimum LCC which is expressed as the sum of present value of seismic retrofit costs, expected maintenance costs, and expected economic losses with the constraints such as design requirements and acceptable risk of death. The proposed methodology is applied to the LCC-effective optimal seismic retrofit and maintenance strategy of a steel bridge considered as a example bridge in the accompanying study, and various conditions such as corrosion environments and Average Daily Traffic Volumes (ADTVs) are considered to investigate the effects on total expected LCC. In addition, to verify the validity of the developed methodology, the results are compared with the existing methodology. From the numerical investigation, it may be positively expected that the proposed methodology can be effectively utilized as a practical tool for the decision-making of LCC-effective optimal seismic retrofit and maintenance strategy of deteriorating bridges.

In the evaluation of seismic performance for structural materials and components, the loading rate and axial force can have a significant impact. Due to time-delay effects between input and output displacements, It is difficult to apply high-rate displacement in cyclic tests and hybrid simulations. Additionally, the difficulty of maintaining a consistent vertical load in the presence of lateral displacement has limited fast and real-time tests performed while maintaining a constant vertical load. In this study, slow, fast cyclic tests and real-time hybrid simulations were conducted to investigate the rate dependency and the influence of vertical loads of Isolation Bearing. In the experiment, the FLB System including an Adaptive Time Series (ATS) compensation and a state estimator was constructed for real-time control of displacement and vertical load. It was found that the vertical load from the superstructure and loading rate can have a significant impact on the strength of the seismic isolation bearing and its behavior during an earthquake. When conducting experiments for seismic performance evaluation, they must be implemented to be similar to reality. This study demonstrates the excellent performance of the system built and used for seismic performance evaluation and enables accurate and efficient seismic performance evaluation.

This study is an experimental comparison on the fact that the sinusoidal load, which has been used so far in the laboratory cyclic test, which is an important part of the liquefaction triggering study, is somewhat different from the phenomenon that causes the soil liquefaction during the earthquake loading. To this end, this study proposes a new type of combined sinusoidal load and compares it with experimental results to load the conventional sine wave. In the comparison, the shaking table tests were carried out and the sample in the tests was remolded with the relative density of 40%, which is a condition where liquefaction is easy to occur. Firstly, the conventional cyclic test was carried out under the condition that with the amplitude of sine wave was 0.3 g. Additionally, 3 types of tests were performed using the combination loads made up with 0.03 g sinusoidal load and 0.3g sinusoidal load. At that time, the loading time for the first sinusoidal load were changed with 5 seconds, 10 seconds, and 15 seconds. As a result, the test with the conventional sine wave and the test with the first sinusoidal loading for 5 seconds showed that the change of the pore water pressure gradually increased. But in the tests with the combined sinusoidal load which changed the first sinusoidal loading time with 10 and 15 seconds, it was found that the pore water pressure suddenly rose at a certain instant and liquefaction occurs. From the experimental comparison, it is judged that it is appropriate that the time of the first sine wave is over 10 seconds at the proposed combined load for the soil condition with relative density 40%.

During rainfall period, to identify the characteristics of the infiltration of moisture, electrical resistivity monitering survey was carried out to weathered zone. Four regions of geophysical exploration areas with different rock types, four regions were selected. An area consists of mafic granite and three areas are composed of sedimentary rocks (Sandstone, Shale, Unconsolidated Mudstone). Survey was conducted from June (rainy season) to November (dry season), and during the period the change in resistivity was observed. According to the result of monitoring exploration on Geumjeong and Jinju areas, for the estimation of the standard rainfall, it is necessary to estimate the effects of the antecedent rainfall during the rainy season based on the overall rainfall from June till October and also necessary to consider this for the estimation of the half period. Also, the vertical distribution of the low resistivity anomaly zone does not show that the infiltration of moisture does not occur uniformly from the surface of the ground to the lower ground but shows that it occurs along the relaxed gap of the crack or soil stratum of the weathering zone. In Pohang area, the type of moisture infiltration is different from that of the granite or sedimentary rock. Since, after the rainfall, the rate of infiltration to the lower ground is high and the period of cultivation to the lower bedrock aquifer is short, it has similar effect to that of the antecedent rainfall applied for the estimation of the standard rainfall being presently used. In Danyang, due to the degree of water content of the ground, the duration period of the low resistivity anomaly zone observed in the lower ground of the place where clastic sedimentary rock is distributed is similar to that in Pohang area. The degree of lateral water diffusion at the time of localized heavy rain is the same as that of the sedimentary rock in Jinju. According to the above analysis results, in Danyang area, the period when the antecedent rainfall has its influence is estimated as three weeks or so.
