  • Our purpose is to develope the system which detects splogs automatically among blogs on Web environment. After removing HTML of blogs, they are tagged by part of speech(POS) tagger. Words and their POS tags information is used as a feature type. Among features, we select useful features with $x^2$ statistics and train the SVM with the selected features. Our system acquired 90.5% of F1 measure with SPLOG data set.

  • Fingerprint classification is useful to reduce the matching time of a huge fingerprint identification system by categorizing fingerprints into predefined classes according to their global features. Although global features are distributed diversly because of the uniqueness of a fingerprint, previous fingerprint classification methods extract global features non-adaptively from the fixed region for every fingerprint. We propose an novel method that extracts features adaptively for each fingerprint in order to classify various fingerprints effectively. It extracts ridge directional values as feature vectors from the region after searching the feature region by calculating variations of ridge directions, and classifies them using support vector machines. Experimental results with NIST4 database show that we have achieved a classification accuracy of 90.3% for the five-class problem and 93.7% for the four-class problem, and proved the validity of the proposed adaptive method by comparison with non-adaptively extracted feature vectors.

  • A speech-act is a behavior intended by users in an utterance. Speech-act classification is important in a dialogue system. The machine learning and rule-based methods have mainly been used for speech-act classification. In this paper, we propose a speech-act classification method based on the combination of support vector machine (SVM) and transformation-based learning (TBL). The user's utterance is first classified by SVM that is preferentially applied to categories with a low utterance rate in training data. Next, when an utterance has negative scores throughout the whole of the categories, the utterance is applied to the correction phase by rules. The results from our method were higher performance over the baseline system long with error-reduction.

  • In this study, we propose a new procedure for improving the character recognition of text area extracted from video images. The recognition of strings extracted from video, which are mixed with Hangul, English, numbers and special characters, etc., is more difficult than general character recognition because of various fonts and size, graphic forms of letters tilted image, disconnection, miscellaneous videos, tangency, characters of low definition, etc. We improved the recognition rate by taking commonly used letters and leaving out the barely used ones instead of recognizing all of the letters, and then using SVM and RDA character recognition methods. Our numerical results indicate that combining SVM and RDA performs better than other methods.

  • The main goal of this research is to build a sentiment analysis system which automatically determines user opinions of the Stanford Sentiment Treebank in terms of three sentiments such as positive, negative, and neutral. Firstly, sentiment sentences are POS tagged and parsed to dependency structures. All nodes of the Treebank and their polarities are automatically extracted from the Treebank. We train two Support Vector Machines models. One is for a node level classification and the other is for a sentence level. We have tried various type of features such as word lexicons, POS tags, Sentiment lexicons, head-modifier relations, and sibling relations. Though we acquired 74.2% in accuracy on the test set for 3 class node level classification and 67.0% for 3 class sentence level classification, our experimental results for 2 class classification are comparable to those of the state of art system using the same corpus.

  • This study utilizes various approaches of machine learning in the process of automatically assigning descriptors to journal articles. The effectiveness of feature selection and the size of training set were examined, after selecting core journals in the field of information science and organizing test collection from the articles of the past 11 years. Regarding feature selection, after reducing the feature set using $x^2$ statistics(CHI) and criteria that prefer high-frequency features(COS, GSS, JAC), the trained Support Vector Machines(SVM) performed the best. With respect to the size of the training set, it significantly influenced the performance of Support Vector Machines(SVM) and Voted Perceptron(VTP). However, it had little effect on Naive Bayes(NB).

  • To solve the classification problems, various data mining techniques have been applied to database marketing, credit scoring and market forecasting. In this paper, we compare various techniques such as bagging, boosting, LASSO, random forest and support vector machine with the daily lens transaction data. The classical techniques-decision tree, logistic regression-are used too. The experiment shows that the random forest has a little smaller misclassification rate and standard error than those of other methods. The performance of the SVM is good in the sense of misclassfication rate and bad in the sense of standard error. Taking the model interpretation and computing time into consideration, we conclude that the LASSO gives the best result.

  • Sentiment classification is a recent subdiscipline of text classification, which is concerned not with the topic but with opinion. In this paper, we present a Korean sentence and document classification system using effective sentiment features. Korean sentiment classification starts from constructing effective sentiment feature sets for positive and negative. The synonym information of a English word thesaurus is used to extract effective sentiment features and then the extracted English sentiment features are translated in Korean features by English-Korean dictionary. A sentence or a document is represented by using the extracted sentiment features and is classified and evaluated by SVM(Support Vector Machine).

  • We cannot analyze big data, which attracts recent attentions in industry and academy, by batch processing algorithms developed in data mining because big data, by definition, cannot be uploaded and processed in the memory of a single system. So an imminent issue is to develop various leaning algorithms so that they can be applied to big data. In this paper, we review various algorithms for support vector machines in the literature. Particularly, we introduce online type and parallel processing algorithms that are expected to be useful in big data classifications and compare the strengths, the weaknesses and the performances of those algorithms through simulations for linear classification.
