  • The application contents, process, and its limitations are discussed for the setting of Korean legal guides & criteria for water cycle and ecological condition in development project of land use by thorough comparison and examination of prerequisites and credits of water cycle and soil+vegetation by USA's SITES (Sustainable Sites Initiative). In the case of SITES, due to the implementation procedure operated as a non-governmental independent assessment system by Green Business Certification, Inc, the natural condition of water cycle and soil-vegetation items-the key element of ecosystem services can be quantitatively assessed, well along with its legal and institutional guidelines and regulations. On the other hand, in the case of Korea, as a part of the national certification procedure for green building, the ecological area ratio system still have very limited role as an only amenity resource in the creation of artificial green spaces and insufficiency of management system for rain water. In conclusion, it was understood as an urgent situation in necessary for prompt establishment of site's sustainability certification system at the national level, based on management of water circulation and natural soil & vegetation in developed area with consideration of various land uses and types of development projects.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze convergent effects of team interaction and team metacognition of participants on a continuous participation in the university learning community. We developed 19 items of team interaction and 17 items of team metacognition through literature review. The subjects were 113 students who participated in learning community in A university. The results are as follows. First, team interaction level and team metacognition level can affect a continuous participation in learning community. The higher team interaction is and the lower team metacognition is, the higher continuous participation is. Second, among team interaction factors that affect a continuous participation in learning community, the more number of learning is and the more encouragement of one another is, the higher continuous participation is. But the less participation of members is, the less flow to learning is, and the less learning time is, the lower a continuous participation is. Third, among team metacognition factors that affect a continuous participation in learning community, the more number of learning is, the higher continuous participation is. But the more use of various learning tools is and the more learning time is, the lower continuous participation is. Based on these results, the convergent ways of support for continuous participation in the university learning community are as follows. First, supporting system is needed to induce students to experience the positive atmosphere of learning community by increasing number of learning to facilitate team interaction and urging them to encourage one another. Second, providing the effective utilization method is necessary for students to fully acknowledge the necessity and value of team metacognition activity.

  • Pro bono, a type of voluntary activity, has been considered important in enhancing desirable voluntary activities in our society. This study conducts research on the concept and sustainability of pro bono activities. In doing that, the study conducts focus group interviews with the pro bono activists who have been doing voluntary works for at least six months. Particularly, the study focuses on how to stimulate the participation of people with expertise in probono voluntary activities. The findings suggest that hub-centers be established in managing and connecting probono activities among probono volunteers and keep them motivated. Even though probono activism assume the principles of voluntarism and no-salary, it is necessary to provide potential probono volunteers with several incentives such as tax break and income tax deduction.

  • This paper examines whether the pension systems of the western countries which was traditionally classified into the Beveridgean and Bismarckian pension regime will converge after recent pension reforms in the financial sustainability and adequacy perspective by comparing between UK, Germany and Sweden. As a result of pension reforms for the last 20 years, the gap between the Beveridgean and Bismarckian pension regime will be likely to decrease and, in particular, the tendency to convergency in adequacy is found. Even though it is not jumped to a conclusion that public pension expenditure between the three countries is likely to converge, the tendency to convergency in financial sustainability is also found if the difference of demographic aging between countries is considered. The paper suggests that it is necessary to make agreement between the range of pension expenditure and replacement ratio that western countries suggest in pension debate in Korea, instead of hitherto useless controversy between financial sustainability and adequacy.

  • The goal of international development projects is to assist sustainable development in recipient countries through foreign aid from donor countries. However, despite the need for both countries to negotiate and work together from the initial stages to maintain sustainability after the project, clear guidelines or standards have not been established. Additionally, despite the need for donor countries, which are relatively advanced, to understand the situation of recipient countries, many projects are donor-centric and fail to prioritize the value of sustainability. Therefore, this study extracted economic, social, and environmental risks that threaten sustainability through literature review and proposed a sustainability framework based on these criteria. To validate framework, actual international development cases conducted by advanced donor countries such as Australia, the United States, and Japan, in collaboration with South Korea, were analyzed by applying content analysis with the reports, which covers the overall contents from the planning stage to the operation stage. Analysis of sustainability perspectives focused on economy, society and the environment, advanced donor countries emphasized (1) the importance of pre-assessment, (2) the need for coordination with the local population and communities despite the existence of donor-specific values, and (3) addressing economic considerations such as pre-operational and maintenance costs, social communication with the local population, and environmental considerations starting from the initial stages of construction regarding the treatment of pollutants as values to be improved. Compared to other advanced donor countries, the Republic of Korea should also focus on consultation with local residents to achieve social integration, and improve sustainability by deployment the managers in local sites for better negotiation. The proposed framework in this study will serve as a tool to enhance communication among the countries and the locals, with the expectation of increasing project efficiency and sustainability.

  • The water resources sustainability is becoming an important issue in consideration of hydrologic uncertainty by global warming and climate change. This study is to assess the water supply performance for the major multipurpose dams using sustainability index. Parameters, mostly utilized in water resources system assessment, are selected in respect of applicability and flexibility, and those parameters are used as a variable of the composite index. In practice, the composite index including reliability, resiliency, vulnerability and maximum deficit are applied to 15 multipurpose dams and 4 major basins. And to conclude, Daechungdam in the Geum river basin and Imhadam, Hapchondam and Namgangdam in the Nakdong river basin show low sustainability comparing with other dams. The Nakdong river basin needs to develop alternatives to improve water supply stability because it indicates the most poor sustainability level.

  • The purpose of this study is to get a whole picture of financial conditions of the new and renewable energy sector which have been growing rapidly and predict bankruptcy risk quantitatively. There have been many researches on the methodologies for company failure prediction, such as financial ratios as predictors of failure, analysis of corporate governance, risk factors and survival analysis, and others. The research method for this study is Altman Z-score which has been widely used in the world. Data Set was composed of 121 companies with financial statements from KIS-Value. Covering period for the analysis of the data set is from the year 2006 to 2011. As a result of this study, we found that 38 percent of the data set belongs to "Distress" Zone (on alert) while 38% (on watch), summed into 76%, whose level could be interpreted to doubt about the sustainability. The average of the SMEs in wind energy sector was worse than that of SMEs in solar energy sector. And the average of the SMEs in the "Distress" Zone (on alert) was worse than that of the companies of large group in the "Distress" Zone (on alert). In conclusion, Altman Z-score was well proved to be effective for New & Renewable Energy Industry in Korea as a result of this study. The importance of this study lies on the result to demonstrate empirically that the majority of solar and wind enterprises are facing the risk of bankruptcy. And it is also meaningful to have studied the relationship between SMEs and large companies in addition to advancing research on new start-up companies.
