  • Applicability of PMT in domestic area, test procedure, and methods determining the shear strength parameters $(cu,\phi)$and deformation character (E) using PMT results were studied. At six test boreholes of three construction sites in Pusan, PMT using Elastometer-200 type was performed. The problems occurring during tests were investigated and the test results were analysed.In-situ total horizontal stress could be obtained by observation from pressuremeter curve and limit pressure, p could be determined by $p-log(\Deltav/v)$ method. Shear strength parameters$(cu,\phi)$ and deformation modulus(G, E) could be determined from the PMT results. But effective friction angle and undrained cohesion determined from PMT results were greater than those obtained from laboratory test.Using PMT results, marine soil in Pusan could be classified approximately. Net limite pressure values were in the range of 6.4~22.5 $kg/cm^2$, in clay, 2.2~30.$kg/cm^2$, in sand, 13.0~58.0$kg/cm^2$, in weathered soil and 47.0~190.0 $kg/cm^2$, in weathered rock. Also, Em/p values were in the range of 2.4~7.0 in clay, 2.6~12.1 in sand, 6.8~17.1 in weathered soil and 7.2~29.6 in weathered rock.

  • In this study an iterative procedure for the analysis of drilled shafts was proposed on the basis of the load transfer mechanism. Special attention was given to the estimation of bearing capacity of drilled shafts which was compared with driven piles, and then with the results of pile load test. The load displacement at the pile head was calculated by load than sfer curves (t -z curves, q-z curves) by using Vljayvergiya, Castelli and hi -linear models. Bab ed on the analytical results, it is found that the behavior of drilled shafts is different from that of driven piles the smaller the skin friction mobilized at the pile-boil interface, the smaller the development of the bearing capacity. Hence the greater pile head movement is required to mobilize the same mainitride of bearing capacity. This trend is more noticeable in sand than in clay. It is also found that as the length-todiameter ratios increase, the dirtference of ultimate bearing capacity between drilled shafts and driven piles is becoming lass ger in sand, but it is minor in clay.

  • The underground conduit laid under different environments exhibits various behaviour according to the ground and external load as well as the loading time and conditions, so on. As the environmental conditions are usually different even within the same area, it is very difficult to correctly predict the stress conditions and behaviour of the underground conduit using currently available theoretical analysis. Especially, it is not yet satisfied in Korea for the evaluation of the underground conduit under the influence of the load of vehicles or unexpected loading conditions. Thus, in this study the assessment for the excavation depth and ground disturbance was carried out with a large box model test and numerical analysis. Numerical analysis was also performed for the assessment of dynamic loading conditions like railway load.

  • Excavations by blasting in urban area have caused lots of complaints. Hence, special attentions need to be paid to controlling the ground vibrations in designing blasting for those areas. In this study, among the various parameters that can affect the propagation characteristics of ground vibrations, the effect of the priming location of explosive on the ground vibration level was studied for two types of emulsion explosives that had different detonation velocities. Three priming locations of top, middle, and bottom were considered in a charged hole. In the experiment on the effect of detonation velocity, the ground vibration caused by the explosive with a lower detonation velocity showed larger attenuation in the amplitude. The priming locations also affected the ground vibrations levels. The ground vibration level produced from middle priming was found to be larger than the other priming methods under the same blast conditions, but the attenuation of amplitude was also larger in this case. In contrast, the ground vibration level from bottom priming was not larger than the middle priming, but the attenuation was smaller so that the ground vibration was detected at a longer distance.

  • In marine site surveys, drilling boreholes are restrictively conducted, while geophysical surveys are used with ease. To overcome the limitations of marine site survey, various site survey data should be collected and analysed by adopting complementary pros and cons. In this study, the integration assessment was established to digitize 2D geo-layer based on the overlapping of a few borehole data to seismic refraction tomography and to determine 3D geo-information based on the kriging for the design of offshore-foundation. And the overlapping method was proposed considering spatial variability of the tomography and separation distance from borehole position to determine the 2D geo-layer. Finally, the integration assessment was applied to offshore wind-turbine site in Jeju-do, and its applicability was verified based on the cross-validation.

  • In this paper, a series of laboratory chamber tests were performed to evaluate the effects of clays mixed into compaction piles due to confining stress of ground on consolidation promoting. For the tests, various compaction piles such as SCP, GCP, and RAPP (Recycled-Aggregate Porous concrete Pile) were used. The ground condition was simulated at 50% and 100% of degree of consolidation. Also, confining stresses were applied to the composite ground corresponding to those of 5m depth. The amount of mixed clays into each compaction pile were estimated by measuring the drainage from the saturated compaction piles. From the test result, it was shown that the drainage area of compaction pile was changing according to the consolidation condition. GCP showed the most change of drainage area as it has relatively large void ratio; however, the amount of change was decreased by progressing consolidation of ground.

  • In the seismic designing of bridges, the pile foundation of bridge piers generally have been modeled to have a fixed end for its convenience and conservative designing. The fixed-end assumption, however, produces very conservative results in terms of the pier forces. Therefore, many other design methods are evolved to consider the flexibility of the pile foundation. In this study, the response spectrum analysis was performed for a bridge pier having a pile foundation. The shear force, moment, and displacement, which occurred at the pier column under an earthquake loading, were compared to analyze the effects of the modeling method, soil condition and the input earthquake response spectrum. In most cases, the fixed-end model gives larger design forces than flexible foundation models. However, when a long period earthquake is applied to the bridge pier on a soft clay foundation, it is found that the flexible foundation models give larger design forces than the fixed-end model. In the end, the reliability of several flexible foundation models was verified by comparing their results with those of a numerical analysis that considers the soil-structure interaction phenomenon in a rigorous manner.

  • The use of TBM has been rapidly increased in recent years since TBM has been introduced to Korea in 1985 and Korea came to occupy 27% of TBM holding ratio in the world. Despite a lot of experience, study on promoting the efficiency of TBM excavation is insufficient. The factors that influence the efficiency of excavation are the mechanical farttor geotechnical factor and management factor. The study on the efficiency of excavation has focused on the improvement of mechanical factor. But geotechnical factor is also very important and by this factor engineer can estimate the applicability of TBM. The purpose of this paper is to understand the effectiveness of TBM excavation for vari orts rock quality by analysing relations between rock quality and TBM excavation.

  • In order to investigate the soil disturbance induced by anchor-shoe for PVD installation and the anchoring mechanism, a new two dimensional testing system was developed. By using the developed testing system, 1g and centrifuge model tests were performed, simulating the driving-retrieval process of both conventional symmetric anchor shoe and new asymmetric anchor shoe. Various size anchor-shoes were simulated and the results were compared. The images recorded during the installation were analyzed by image processing technique. The results of the image analysis presented the clay disturbance depending on the size and type of anchor shoe. In addition, from the retrieval process, the anchoring mechanism was revealed and the holding capacity was measured. As results, the size of anchor shoe influences the soil disturbance and holding capacity. The new asymmetric anchor shoe reduces the soil disturbance and improves anchoring performance.

  • Groundwater level (GWL) fluctuation, which can occur due to several artificial and natural reasons, causes reduction of bearing capacity of foundation structures and can lead settlement of ground. As a result, GWL fluctuation affects stability and serviceability of entire building. However, in many case, GWL is considered as fixed value that obtain from geotechnical investigations. That is reason that GWL fluctuation is considered as area of non-geotechnical engineering. In present study, factors causing GWL fluctuation were analyzed at urban and rural area as preliminary research of quantification of GWL fluctuation. GWL varies according to hydrological and geographical characteristics. Also, the influence factors are largely affected by hydrological and geographical characteristics.
