  • In this study, a numerical approach based on mid-point integrated finite elements and a viscous boundary is proposed for time-domain wave-propagation analyses in infinite poroelastic media. The proposed approach is accurate, efficient, and easy to implement in time-domain analyses. In the approach, an infinite domain is truncated at some distance. The truncated domain is represented by mid-point integrated finite elements with real element-lengths and a viscous boundary is attached to the end of the domain. Given that the dynamic behaviors of the proposed model can be expressed in terms of mass, damping, and stiffness matrices only, it can be implemented easily in the displacement-based finite-element formulation. No convolutional operations are required for time-domain calculations because the coefficient matrices are constant. The proposed numerical approach is applied to typical wave-propagation and soil-structure interaction problems. The model is verified to produce accurate and stable results. It is demonstrated that the numerical approach can be applied successfully to nonlinear soil-structure interaction problems.

  • Geotextile tribes are made of sewn geotextile sheet and hydraulically or mechanically filled with dredged materials. They have been applied in hydraulic and coastal engineering in recent years(shore protection structure, detached breakwater, groins, and jetty). Therefore, it is composed of geotextile and confined fill material. Recently, new preliminary design criteria supported by model and prototype tests, and some stability analysis calculations have been studied. The stability analysis of geotextile tube is composed of geotechnical and hydrodynamic analysis. The stability check points are sliding failure, overturning, bearing capacity failure against the wave attack. In this paper are presented the stability analysis method by empirical equation and 2-D equilibrium analysis for geotextile tube. Also, the hydraulic model tests were performed to verify the theoretical stability analysis with geotextile tube shape, filling ratio, significant wave height, and so on. The results of this study show that the stability of geotextile tube depends on the tube shape, contact area, projection area. The theoretical analysis and hydraulic model test show almost the same results.

  • A difficulty encountered in engineering seismic mapping is that reflection events from shallow discontinuities are commonly overlapped with coherent noise such as air wave, direct waves, head waves, and high-amplitude surface waves. Here, the radial trace transform, a simple geometric re-mapping of a trace gather (x-t domain) to another trace gather (v-t domain), is applied to investigate the rejection effect of coherent linear noises. Two different types of data sets were selected as a representative database: good-quality data for intermediate sounding (hundreds of meters) in a sedimentary basin and very noisy data for shallow (${\leq}50m$) mapping of the weathered zone and bedrock surface. Results obtained with cascaded application of the radial transform and low-cut filtering proved to be as good as, or better than, those produced using f-k filtering, and were especially effective for air wave and direct wave. This simple transform enables better understanding of the characteristics of various types of noise in the RT domain, and can be generally applied to overcoming diffractions and back-scatterings caused by joints, fractures, and faults commonly that are encountered in geotechnical problems.

  • Slurry type shield would be very effective for the tunnelling in a sandy ground, when the slurry pressure would be properly adjusted. Low slurry pressure could cause a tunnel face failure or a ground settlement in front of the tunnel face. Thus, the stability of tunnel face could be maintained by applying an excess slurry pressure that is larger than the active earth pressure. However, the slurry pressure should increase properly because an excessively high slurry pressure could cause the slurry flow out or the passive failure of the frontal ground. It is possible to apply the high slurry pressure without passive failure if a horizontal impermeable layer is located in the ground in front of the tunnel face, but its location, size, and effects are not clearly known yet. In this research, two-dimensional model tests were carried out in order to find out the effect of a horizontal impermeable layer for the slurry shield tunnelling in a saturated sandy ground. In tests slurry pressure was increased until the slurry flowed out of the ground surface or the ground fails. Location and dimension of the impermeable layer were varied. As results, the maximum and the excess slurry pressure in sandy ground were linearly proportional to the cover depth. Larger slurry pressure could be applied to increase the stability of the tunnel face when the impermeable layer was located in the ground above the crown in front of the tunnel face. The most effective length of the impermeable grouting layer was 1.0 ~ 1.5D, and the location was 1.0D above the crown level. The safety factor could be suggested as the ratio of the maximum slurry pressure to the active earth pressure at the tunnel face. It could also be suggested that the slurry pressure in the magnitude of 3.5 ~4.0 times larger than the active earth pressure at the initial tunnel face could be applied if the impermeable layer was constructed at the optimal location.

  • With respect to the tensile strength of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island, a comparative study was conducted using the existing research results and the test results performed in this study. In addition, the characteristics and effectiveness of the cohesion and internal friction angle estimated from the Brazilian tensile strength and unconfined compressive strength of Jeju volcanic rocks were investigated. As results, the Brazilian tensile strength of Jeju volcanic rocks was closely related to absorption, and decreased exponentially as the absorption increased. It was confirmed that the internal friction angle was closely related to the ratio of unconfined compressive strength to Brazilian tensile strength (σc / σt), and increased logarithmically as the ratio of σc / σt increased. In addition, the ratios of σc / σt of Jeju volcanic rocks were in the range of 5~20 depending on the magnitude of internal friction angle. In the case of cohesion, it was closely related to the absorption and Brazilian tensile strength. The cohesion exponentially decreased as the absorption increased, such as the relation between the Brazilian tensile strength and absorption. It was confirmed that there was a linear relation between the cohesion and Brazilian tensile strength.

  • In this study, in order to evaluate stability of the room-and-pillar underground structure, a series of preliminary numerical analyses were performed. Design concept and procedure of an underground structure for obtaining a space are proposed, which should be different from structural design for the room-and-pillar in mine. With assumed material properties, a series of numerical analyses were performed by varying size ratios of room and pillar and then the failure modes and location at yielding initiation were investigated. From the results, relationship between the ratio of pillar width to the roof span (w/s) and overburden pressure at failure initiation shows a relatively linear relation, and the effect of w/s on structural stability is much more critical than the ratio of pillar width and height (w/H) which is a crucial parameter in design of the room-and-pillar mining. It means that roof tensile failure and shear failure at shoulder and pillar are necessary to be considered together for confirming overall structural stability of the room-and-pillar structure, rather than considering the pillar stability only in mining. Failure modes and location at failure initiation were varied with respect to the ratio of room and pillar widths. Therefore, it is necessary to simultaneously consider stability of both roof span and pillar for design of underground structure by the room-and-pillar method.

  • Shield TBM is a tunnelling method that has a wider range of applications in the poor ground condition compared to conventional tunnels (Drill and Blast). Currently, a 13.3 m large-diameter slurry shield TBM is preparing for construction to pass under the Han River. Shield TBM is divided into slurry and EPB shield TBM, and management items during construction are different depending on each characteristic. In this paper, the equipment type, origin, application case and trouble case were analyzed for slurry shield TBM, which is mainly constructed in soft ground. In addition, 2D and 3D model tests were conducted on the condition of soil depth for the possibility of slurry leakage into front of the equipment, with appropriate chamber pressure. Based on this paper, it proposed to provide basic and reference data for proper excavation surface pressure and chamber pressure during construction of slurry shield TBM under soft ground conditions, and proposed measures to minimize stability and environmental decline due to slurry ejection.

  • The long-term behavior, such as in excavation problems of weak medium, can be dealt with by the elasto-viscoplasticity models. In this paper, a combined formulation of elasto-viscoplasticity using boundary elements and finite elements without using internal cells is presented. The domain integral introduced due to the viscoplastic stresses is transformed into a boundary integral applying direct integration in cylindrical coordinates. The results of the developed boundary element analysis are compared with those from the explicit solution and from the finite element analysis. It is observed that the boundary element analysis without internal cells results in some error because of its deficiency in handling the nonlinearity in local stress concentration. Therefore, a coupled analysis of boundary elements and finite elements, in which finite elements are used in the area of stress concentration, is developed. The coupled method is applied to a time dependent inelastic problem with semi-infinite boundaries. It results in reasonable solution compared with other methods where relatively higher degree of freedoms are employed. Thus, it is concluded that the combined analysis may be used for such problems in the effective manner.

  • In this study, an interactive analysis considering column-pile interaction is performed on the basis of an equivalent base spring model for supplementing virtual fixed point design of bent pile structures. Through this analytical method, the application of the minimum steel reinforcement ratio of the pile (0.4%) is analyzed by taking into account the major influencing parameters. Furthermore, the limit depth for steel reinforcement ratio is proposed through the relationships between column and pile conditions. To obtain the detailed information, it is found that an interactive analysis is intermediate in theoretical accuracy between the virtual fixed point model analysis and full-modeling analysis. Base on this study, it is also found that the maximum bending moment is located within cracking moment of the pile when material nonlinearity is considered. Therefore, the minimum steel reinforcement ratio is appropriately applicable for the optimal design of bent pile structures. Finally, the limit depth for steel reinforcement ratio ($L_{As=x%}$) is proposed by considering the field measured results. It is shown that the normalized limit depth ratio for steel reinforcement ratio ($L_{As=x%}/L_P$) decreases linearly as the length-diameter ratio of pile ($L_P/D_P$) increases, and then converges at a constant value.
