  • Powder method is one of the most commonly used techniques for developing latent fingerprints on non-porous surfaces. While fingerprint powders become more diverse, there is no standard for the number of stroking a brush. For this reason, crime scene investigators need to stroke a brush as they try to figure out how much latent fingerprints are developed. Also, results vary from individual to individual. According to the combination of material and manufacturing, there are various results that powder particles hold together. It is called auto-adhesion which means the interaction between powder particles. This study showed auto-adhesion of 13 kinds of fingerprint powders expanding the number of stroking time. Consequently, some fingerprint powders had strong auto-adhesive property and others had weak auto-adhesion. Furthermore, the others did not change.

  • Styrofoam is one of the most commonly used materials in everyday life, such as various packaging containers, toys, and buoys, and is likely to be found in crime scenes. However, due to the structural characteristics of Styrofoam, fingerprints cannot be deposited well. According to previous researches, powdering or cyanoacrylate fuming method was applied for developing fingerprints on Styrofoam. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of MMD I through comparative experiments of powdering. As a result of applying powder method and MMD I, MMD I was more effective than powder method on styrofoam.

  • Conventional fingerprint powders used during crime scene investigations pose potential health hazards. Thus, multiple natural replacement powders, including squid ink powder, indigo and rice powder were used to develop (visualize) latent fingerprints on non-porous surfaces (e.g., glass, plastic and tile). Fingerprints developed using the natural powders were compared using the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) with those developed with traditional black powder. The peak areas of ridges were also compared using densitometric image analyses. Collectively, objective and quantitative evaluation methods were developed. The effectiveness of natural powders varied depending on the surface but, in general, squid ink powder performed well on most surfaces. Indigo powder performed well on tile surfaces, while rice powder performed well on glass surfaces. Plastic was the most difficult surface from which to develop fingerprints. Image analysis using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) demonstrated the importance of the size and shape of natural powder particles to properly adhere to the ridges. Although densitometric image analyses did not correlate the number of minutiae and ridge peak areas, an unbiased, objective evaluation method would be possible using image analyses with a reference image. Additional experimentation will yield safe and cost-effective natural powders with which adequate fingerprint development can be performed.

  • Powder method is simple and very effective method for developing latent finger and palm print in crime scene. This technique has been actively studied to enhance effectiveness. In general, the evaluation for developing powder is mainly performed by the subjective opinion of researcher from comparison of the results obtained with existing and new one to develope finger and palm deposition. The purpose of this work is to present objective method of powder-treated latent fingerprint for evaluating method by developing efficiency. We indicated three evaluating methods of objective developing efficiency, which are measuring the number of minutiae in same sections on print, scattering level of developing reagent and contrast between developing reagent and background materials.

  • We tested the pre-treatment of alumina, leucine, alumina mixed with leucine at ratios of 9:1 (Al-Leu (9:1)) and 5:1 (Al-Leu (5:1)), and alumina mixed with sodium lactate at a ratio of 5:1 (Al-Lac (5:1)) on aged fingerprints (1, 7, 14, and 30 days after natural fingerprinting) before cyanoacrylate (CA) fuming to improve the development efficacy. As a result of the experiment, fingerprints with pre-treatment of alumina, leucine, Al-Leu (9:1), Al-Leu (5:1), and Al-Lac (5:1) showed better development efficacy (area and minutiae) than fingerprints without pre-treatment. Therefore, this modified CA fuming method improved the development efficacy with five pretreatments.

  • This study investigated the possibility of DNA contamination during fingerprint collection when using a fingerprint brush. Two kinds of brushes were selected: powdered brushes and neat (not powdered) brushes. The fingerprints were collected from the tips of all the fingers and near the wrists of both living and deceased persons using the two brushes. Both brushes were analyzed for the DNA contents and profiles. The results obtained confirmed the transfer of DNA onto both brushes, although the results showed that the powdered brushes carried more DNA compared with the neat brushes. More DNA was transferred onto the brushes used on deceased persons than onto the brushes used for living persons. Only partial DNA profiles were obtained from the brushes, which is due to the presence of other sources of DNA on the surfaces of the skin of both living and deceased persons. This phenomenon confirmed the DNA contamination during fingerprint collection when fingerprint brushes were used.

  • There are various methods of developing latent fingerprints from evidence found at crime scenes. Crime scene investigators should choose appropriate techniques among them depending on the conditions of the evidences. In this study, we compared the three methods using forensic light sources to develop latent fingerprints on multi-colored surfaces. We selected the various samples according to color, shape and texture of the surfaces and developed the latent fingerprints using fluorescent powder, IR(Infrared) photography and Episcopic Co-axial Illumination. Fluorescent powder was highly effective on all surfaces. IR photography was also effective, but only on the not dark surfaces. Episcopic Co-axial Illumination was effective only on the flat and polished surfaces. Although fluorescent powder was fine regardless of the characteristics of the surfaces, IR photography was better on certain surfaces.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the influence of adhesive force of lifter on powdered fingermark. First, an experiment was conducted to measure the adhesive force of five kinds of lifters. Second, each fingermark deposited on slide glass was developed using four kinds of powders. Then, these were transferred to lifter, and the quality of the transferred fingermark was observed. As a result of measuring the adhesive force of the lifter using the ASTM D3121-17 rolling ball tack method, the difference in adhesion between the lifters except the gelatin lifter was small. Also, it was confirmed that the quality of the transferred fingermark was not significantly related to the adhesive force of the lifter. However, if the quality of the transferred fingermark is not good when transferring to a gelatin lifter which is a lifter having a weak adhesive force, additional transfer is possible.

  • Vacuum metal deposition (VMD) is effective to develop latent fingerprints on non-porous and semi-porous surfaces. VMD can be used in cases when fingerprints that can not be developed by generalized techniques or deposited on difficult surfaces. The recommended surfaces for VMD techniques include vinyl, polymer bills, magnetic coated tickets, etc. In this study, the minimum amount of gold input was explored for developing fingerprints from at least 12 hours to up to 28 days after deposit fingerprint on the pink high density polyethylene envelope (HDPE) and low density polyethylene envelope (LDPE), which are mainly used as delivery envelopes. And the results were compared with the effects of black powder and fluorescent powder. In addition, delivery envelopes used for delivery were collected, then classified as HDPE and LDPE and pseudo-operation test was performed. As a result, VMD method developed good quality of fingerprints.

  • Latent fingerprint left on the adhesive sides of tapes can be easily found at a crime scene. Small Particle Reagents(SPR) based on iron oxide($Fe_3O_4$) is a technique for the detection of a latent fingerprint adhesive surface. In this study, found out that the causes affecting the quality of the fingerprints developed when used SPR based on iron oxide. To a suspension of 0.5g of iron oxide in 100ml of distilled water, 0.5ml or more surfactant were added can be developed latent fingerprints of good quality. In addition, using surfactants HLB(hydrophile-lipophile balance) value of 11~18 showed good contrast to the background and latent fingerprint.
