  • The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the influence of pre-service science teachers' selection of earth science I, II in the high school and their college major on their self-perceived attitude and academic achievement in general earth science lecture at university. The participants in the study were 273 who enrolled in the division of science education, college of education and took the general earth science lecture from 2012 to 2015. The data was analyzed with two-way ANOVA by using SPSS 23.0. The results indicated that there was no significant difference of students' attitude and examination difficulty in general earth science lecture between earth science major and other subject major. However, students who took earth science I and/or II in high school showed positive attitude toward the lecture and higher achievement scores than students who didn't take earth science I, II in their high school. The results of the study imply that it is essential to consider students' attitude toward science and achievement in pre-service science teacher education.

  • Numerical data of the geological time scale in Earth Science I, II textbooks and those of University textbooks of Korea and other countries are briefly reviewed. Numerical data of the geologic time scale shown in Earth Science I, II textbooks are mostly out of date and many of them follow those in the University textbooks of Korea. The same situation is apparent for introductory Earth Science or Geology textbooks of other countries as old data exist in their text books as well. There are many new data in the International Stratigraphic Chart (ISC 2000) and International Geologic Time Scale (IGTS 2003) recently updated by International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) and A Geologic Time Scale (GTS 2004). Among the new data, some important things are Paleogene and Neogene Periods of Cenozoic Era, Mississippian and Pensilvanian Epochs of Carborniferous Period, Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic, and Neoproterozoic Eras of Proterozoic Eon, and Eoarchean, Paleoarchean, Mesoarchean, and Neoarchean Eras of Archean Eon. These new data should be used in the new Earth Science textbooks.

  • In this study, searched how science museum reflects personality of course of study and target comparing display contents of science museum with high school earth science Ⅰand Ⅱ of the 7th curriculum. Result of this study is as following. First, area that earth science contents of course of study are exhibited has been less than 50%, and is preponderated by unit. Second, earth science course of study reflection degree of science museum is middle.(2.8 points of perfect score 5 points) Third, number of average mark of contents that is exhibited by science museum in significance level 0.05 lows is difference, and it is no difference by unit.

  • On the basis of Sternberg's theory of mental self-government, this examined the difference in thinking style between gifted science students and non-gifted students, and their earth science concepts by the different types of thinking styles. The subjects were consisted of 120 students from the Busan Science Academy and 122 students from two general high schools in Busan, Korea. All participants responded to the Thinking Styles Inventory which is a self-report test consisting of 65 items, and essay questions for examining the students' earth science concepts. The results are as follows. First, the gifted science students prefer legislative, judical, anarchic, global, and liberal styles, where non-gifted students prefer executive, oligarchic, and conservative styles. Second, Type I thinking style group prove to have more complex concepts in relation to the geological and astronomical areas than those of the Type II thinking style group in both of the gifted and non-gifted students. This indicates that Type I thinking style students use a deep learning approach where Type II thinking style students use a surface learning approach.

  • In this study, teaching-learning activities were developed based on computational thinking (CT) in high school Earth Science I Solid Earth domain. And their effects and implications were examined. To this end, 8 sessions unplugged activities based on problem solving were developed, and applied it to 65 high school students. As a results, significant changes have been were confirmed in both student's perception about CT and CT. After that, based on student's responses to self-reports and interview, the affecting factors for perception about CT and CT in the earth science problem solving process were investigated. In addition, implication that should be considered in terms of design and progress of teaching-learning based on CT were derived. Based on these results, the necessity and operation of teaching-learning activities was suggested for developing CT through various subjects including earth science.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare of freshmen's cognitive frames about the 'Crisis of the Earth' upon taking the Earth science I course in high school to confirm if they reflect the goal of the curriculum reasonably. Data were collected from 67 freshmen who graduated from high school. All participants were asked to express about the 'Crisis of the Earth' in painting with explanation, then we picked meaningful units from paintings. We analyzed the words and frames presented in the paintings using the Semantic Network Analysis. Result are as follows. First, when both groups' (one that took the course vs. the other that did not take it) built their cognitive frames for the 'crisis of the Earth', they reasonably connected areas that are composed of the global environment and they understood that their relation was constantly changing by interacting each other. Second, when configuring a cognitive frame about the 'crisis of the Earth', both groups reflected the characteristics of interrelationship with human activities. In particular, the group that took the course of Earth Science I fully reflected the goal of the curriculum. It is suggested that students recognize the 'crisis of the Earth' not only from a cosmic perspective bot also from the Earth's interior since most of students have strongly connected it to the phenomenon of the Earth's interior rather than the Earth's outward symptoms. In addition, it is recommended that the Earth science curriculum put more emphasis on understanding the importance of problem-solving of the Earth's crisis.

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze vocabularies used the section of 'Living Earth' in 11-grade Earth science textbooks with the Science Word Analysis (SWA) program and to investigate the vocabularies selected by the 11th grade students as difficult ones. For the purpose, we extracted the Earth science vocabularies from six textbooks, and classified into the scientific and non-scientific vocabularies with SWA program based on the standard Korean language dictionary. Also, we investigated the difficulty of each vocabulary by using questionnaire to three hundred sixty students. From the results analyzed with the program, it was found that the frequency of the scientific vocabularies out of the level was the largest any other level in all textbooks. And from the survey, most of the vocabularies selected by students as difficult to understand were classified into out of the level. From these results, it were suggested that the students' cognitive level should be considered in developing science textbooks and difficult vocabularies should be replaced to easy ones within the limits of changeless in the meanings.
