  • Various geophysical methods and geological survey were applied for prospecting of geothermal resources and the attitude of volcanic body at northern part of Kumseongsan, Euiseong. They include magnetic, self-potential, radioactive and resistivity methods, temperature logging near the earth's surface and geological survey. The results of this study are summarized as follows. Various geophysical anomalies is related to the geologically Cretaceous conduit. Anomalies of resistivity and temperature logging seem to be related to the geological structure and terrestrial heat. Small radioactive and self-potential anomalies seem to be associated with chemical character of rocks. The sedimentary rocks dip steeply toward the volcanic rocks, aquifuge. Ideal geological structure for bearing ground water and geothermal resources was founded in the study area. The study area and the adjacent two hot springs area consist of Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and have similar geology.

  • Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources and Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration in Myanmar have explored the Kalaymyo chromitite deposit, Myanmar since 2013. It is now necessary to find a geochemical indicator for efficient mineral exploration in the future and building a 3D geological model for this ore deposit. Mantle podiform chromitite is a major type of Cr ore in this region, which is considered to be formed by mantle-melt interaction beneath the mantle-crust boundary of oceanic lithosphere. In this study we measured major element composition of spinels in harzburgite, dunite and chromitite, and examined the hypothesis that spinel Cr#(molar Cr/(Cr+Al)${\times}$100) can be used as a geochemical indicator in exploration for the Kalaymyo chromitite. The results show that there is a clear correlation between spinel Cr# and distribution of chromitite. The spinel Cr# of harzburgite increases with decreasing the distance from the chromitite bodies. The spinel composition is also closely associated with texture and occurrence of spinels. The high Cr# spinels (30-48) are subhedral to euhedral and enclosed by olivine whereas the low Cr# spinels (16-27) are anhedral and commonly associated with pyroxenes. Often the low Cr# spinels show symplectite intergrowths with pyroxenes, indicating their residual nature. These petrological and geochemical results suggest that the high Cr# spinels have resulted from mantle-melt interaction. We suggest that spinel Cr# can be used as a geochemical indicator for Cr ore exploration and as one of critical factors in 3D geological model in the Kalaymyo chromitite deposit.

  • Though tungsten minerals have been mined for over fifty years in Korea, which has become one of the worlds largest tungsten producers since 1951, knowledge of their mineralogy and geochemistry is somewhat limited to the school of tungsten students. There is a considerable amount of literature throughout the world on the tungsten mineralogy, the geochemical behaviour of tungsten, the nature of tungsten deposits and geological environments for tungsten mineralisation. Commonly known tungsten minerals such as scheelite and wolframite belong to one of two series, the scheelite or the wolframite series, as the primary tungsten minerals. Secondary tungsten minerals are known rather rare, however, some of them plays an important role-of exploration guide in search for tungsten deposits. The geochemistry of tungsten is imperfectly known, and apparently the behaviour of tungsten in geological processes has been the subject of few studies. Recently, some aspects of the fundamental geochemistry of tungsten has been worked out and compiled the data in broad the up to date by many authors. In order to facilitate the better understanding and future exploration of tungsten deposits, an attempt has been made to summarise the existing knowledge of the fundamental geochemistry of tungsten, together with its common geochemical association with various types of tungsten deposits.

  • This paper provides a comprehensive overview of geochemical approaches for investigating and assessing heavy metal contamination in abandoned mine sites. Major sources of contaminants at the abandoned mine sites are mine water, waste rocks, tailings, and chemicals used in beneficiation and mineral processing. Soil, sediment, surface and ground water, and ecological system can be contaminated by heavy metals, which are transported due to erosion of mine waste piles, discharge of acid mine drainage and processed water, and dispersion of dust from waste rocks and tailings. The abandoned mine sites should be characterized using various methods including chemical analysis, mineralogical analysis, acid generation prediction tests, leaching/extraction tests, and field tests. Potential and practical environmental impacts from the abandoned mines should be assessed based on the site characterization.

  • In this paper, we suggested the relationship between resistivity of coastal groundwater and NaCl equivalent salinity for the quantitative interpretation the results of surface/borehole resistivity and electromagnetic data. 38 groundwater samples having electrical conductivity higher than about 1,000 ${\mu}S/cm$ were analyzed to derive the empirical relationship between groundwater resistivity and NaCl equivalent salinity. We used Schlumberger chart GEN-8 to convert ion concentration from hydrochemical analysis to the equivalent NaCl salinity, and the portable meter to measure the in situ electrical conductivity of groundwater samples. From the hydrochemical analysis, relationship between the groundwater resistivity $(R_w)$ and equivalent NaCl salinity (Eq_NaCl) is expressed as Eq_NaCl=$5935.3551{\times}R_w^{-1.0993}$, and relationship between the groundwater electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS) is expressed as TDS=0.721*EC. We believe these relationships are very useful to assess the seawater intrusion in western and southern coastal area.

  • In order to effectively, and accurately assess seawater intrusion in coastal area, multidisciplinary data including geophysical, well logging, and hydrogeochemical data should be managed in systematical way. Such systematical management of data is critical key to improve the re-usability of the data as well as the accuracy of the assessment by means of providing a method of synthetic analysis. Therefore, for systematical management of multidisciplinary data in seawater intrusion problem, we have developed a database management system and 3-D visualization interface based on geographic information system in this, study. All geophysical survey, well logging, hydrochemical, as well as drilling, data are classified as attribute data using Microsoft Access, and joined with spatial information based on ArcView. The database management system and 3-D visualization interface to handle these data, also, developed using the script language of ArcView. We think the development of database and 3-D visualization system will improve the efficiency of data management, user-friendliness of data access, and accuracy of data analysis.

  • By relating mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry to observed magnetic properties, an understanding of the geological factors that control magnetic signatures is obtained. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and geochemical analyses were carried out for 160 samples in the Jurassic to Cretaceous granitoids, which is distributed to Pocheon, Jipori, Geumsan, Namwon, Songnisan, Yongdam, Masan, Jindong, and Taebaeksan areas. The magnetic properties of igneous infusion in these granites reflect bulk rock composition, reduction-oxidation state, hydrothermal alteration which are controlled by tectonic setting, composition and history of the source region, depth of emplacement and nature of wall rocks.
