  • Kimchi refrigerator is a household electric appliance developed with the wholly domestic technology for maturing and keeping kimchi. However, the principle of keeping is not yet revealed obviously. This numerical study has been conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a kimchi refrigerator. The effects of arrangement variation of a evaporation tube are examined. Also, the heat transfer characteristics through the insulation material are discussed in detail. The flow and temperature field was simulated using the commercial code of CFX-5.3. A natural convection flow is formed through about 5/6 region from the bottom within the keeping space and accordingly, the 90% region of kimchi containers satisfies the temperature requirement with 0$\pm$0.5$^{\circ}C$. The stagnant flow exists in the upper 1/6 region of the keeping space and accordingly, the stratified high temperature distributions appear in the upper region of kimchi containers. The upward shift of the start location of a evaporation tube improves the temperature concentration toward $0^{\circ}C$ but the pitch variation is of no effect. The heat fluxes on the insulation surfaces show two-dimensional distributions with being higher toward the center. Through the variation of insulation thickness, 3.5% saving of insulation material is obtained under the same heat transfer rate.

  • Stress and fatigue of the distributor, an equipment of the high-pressure evaporator for the HRSG, were evaluated according to ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 2. First, from the results of the piping system analysis model, reaction forces of the tubes connected to the distributor were derived and used as the nozzle load applied to the detailed analysis model of the distributor afterward. Next, the detailed model to analyze the distributor was constructed, the distributor being statically analyzed for the design condition with the steam pressure and the nozzle load. As a result, the maximum stress occurred at the bore of the horizontal nozzle, and the primary membrane stress at the shell and nozzle was found to be less than the allowable. Next, for the transient operating conditions given for the distributor, thermal analysis was performed and the structural analysis was carried out with the steam pressure, nozzle load, and thermal load. Under the transient conditions, the maximum stress occurred at the vertical downcomer nozzle, and of which fatigue life was evaluated. As a result, the cumulative usage factor was less than the allowable and hence the distributor was found to be safe from fatigue failure.

  • The adsorption equilibria of nitrogen on a region of nanoporous carbonaceous adsorbent with local molecular orientation (LMO) were calculated by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation at 77.16 K. Regions of LMO of identical size were arranged on a regular lattice with uniform spacing. Microporosity was predominately introduced to the model by removing successive out-of-plane domains from the regions of LMO and tilting pores were generated by tilting the basic structure units. This pore structure is a more realistic model than slit-shaped pores for studying adsorption in nanoporous carbon adsorbents. Their porosities, surface areas, and pore size distributions according to constrained nonlinear optimization were also reported. The adsorption in slit shaped pores was also reported for reference. In the slit shaped pores, a clear hysteresis loop was observed in pores of greater than 5 times the nitrogen molecule size, and in capillary condensation and reverse condensation, evaporation occurred immediately at one pressure. In the LMO pore model, three series of local condensations at the basal slip plane, armchair slip plane and interconnected channel were observed during adsorption at pore sizes greater than about 6 times the nitrogen molecular size. In the hysteresis loop, on the other hand, evaporation occurred at one or two pressures during desorption.

  • 'Nokkwang' green pepper plants were grown in soil system (silty loam with pH 6.5) under the greenhouse, to determine the effects of subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) and subsurface drip irrigation plus aeration (SDIA) into root zone comparing with conventional surface drip irrigation (DI) in terms of water use efficiency, soil properties, and growth and fruit yield. Two drip lines per crop row were layed on the soil surface in DI system, buried at a depth of 20cm below the soil surface in SDI system, and also buried at a depth of20cm below the soil surface and aerated for 3minutes a hour during the daytime ($08:00{\sim}19:00$) by a air compressor in SDIA system. A automatic irrigation with starting point of -20kPa and ending point of -10kPa based on soil moisture contents was applied by controllers and electronic vacum soil moisture sensors. Reduction in soil moisture contents was delayed in SDI and SDIA, compared to DI. Irrigation amount applied in pepper cultivation was around 30% less in SDI than in DI. Electric conductivity and nitrate nitrogen content in the surface soil grown green pepper were significantly lowered in SSDI and SDIA, compared to DI. Better development of root system was observed in SDIA and SDI than in DI. Results showed that pepper fruit yield increased by 30% in SDIA and 22% in SDI in comparision with DI.
