  • Purpose : The minimum stimulus onset asynchronoy(SOAmin) is one of important experimental parameters for an event-related fMRI experiment designed with the stochastic stimulus. In this study, the most efficient SOAmin is explored for the stronger activation in motor and language tasks with the stimulus designed stochastically. Materials and methods : The event-related fMRI during motor and language tasks were obtained in four normal right-handed subjects. EPI-BOLD sequence is used at 1.5Tesla MR system for the acquisition of event-related fMRI. For each task the subjects are responded for the stimulus' with 2, 3, 4, and 6 seconds SOAmin. The obtained images are processed with SPM99, and the p value is set as 0.05 for the significant activation detection. The Z value and the number of activated pixels are compared for each task. Results : For the motor task, the primary and supplementary motor areas are activated, and for the language task the consistent activated signals are detected in the Broca's. The activated signal is to be stronger for the shorter SOAmin for both motor and language tasks. At primary motor area, the activated signals is the strongest for 3 seconds SOAmin and for the supplementary motor area the result with 2 seconds SOAmin shows the strongest activation. And the result of language task shows the strongest activation at the 2 seconds SOAmin. Conclusion : In the event-related fMRI of motor and language tasks with the stochastically designed stimulus, the 2 or 3 seconds SOAmin is efficient for more activated and clustered activation.

  • Considering the difficulties associated with the creation of deterioration maps for stone cultural heritages, quantitative determination of chemical and biological contaminants in them is still challenging. Hyperspectral image analysis has been proposed to overcome this drawback. In this study, hyperspectral imaging was performed on Stone Buddhas Temple in Four Directions at Gulbulsa Temple Site(Treasure 121), and several surface contaminants were observed. Based on the color and shape, these chemical and biological contaminants were classified into ten categories. Additionally, a method for establishing each class as a reference image was suggested. Simultaneously, with the help of Spectral Angle Mapper algorithm, two classification methods were used to classify the surface contaminants. Method A focused on the region of interest, while method B involved the application of the spectral library prepared from the image. Comparison of the classified images with the reference image revealed that the accuracies and kappa coefficients of methods A and B were 52.07% and 63.61%, and 0.43 and 0.55, respectively. Additionally, misclassified pixels were distributed in the same contamination series.

  • Thermal spatial representativities of meteorological stations over Korea have been investigated using land surface temperature (LST) based on MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite observation. The linear regression method was used to estimate air temperatures from MODIS LST product. To compare MODIS LST with observed air temperatures at six meteorological stations, the mean values of MODIS LST with nine given window sizes were calculated. In this case, the position of centered pixel in each given window size is correspond to that of each meteorological station. We also applied $4^{\circ}C$ threshold for RMSE comparison, which is based on a analogous study on daily maximum air temperature model using satellite data. In this study, the results showed that each station has a different representativity; Deajeon $15km{\times}15km$, Chuncheon $11km{\times}11km$, Seoul $7km{\times}7km$, Deagu $5km{\times}5km$, Kwangju $3km{\times}3km$, and Busan $3km{\times}3km$.

  • It's noticed that the SA-DCT (Shape-Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform) produces different 2-dimensional transform coefficients according as the first 1-dimensional transform is applied in horizontal or vertical direction for an arbitrarily shaped boundary block. Performing the first 1-dimensional transform in the direction, which has higher spatial correlation or smaller shifting distance, can compact the energy on the smaller number of AC coefficients around DC. This paper shows, experimentally, the compaction capability improvement by choosing the first 1-dimensional transform direction with higher spatial correlation or smaller shifting distance. Two adaptive selection methods are proposed to decide efficiently the spatial direction with higher correlation in a boundary block. One is based on the gradients between DC coefficients of neighboring and current blocks, and the other is based on the final coding efficiency that means the number of bits required for coding the block. Using the MPEG-4 video coder, the proposed method shows coding efficiency gain up to 10.87% compared to the conventional SA-DCT method.

  • We analyzed the feasibility of detecting wave gliders moving on the sea surface using SAR images. For the experiment, a model was constructed and placed on the sea using a towing ship before and after the satellite observation time. In the acquisition of KOMPSAT-5 image, high resolution SAR data of spotlight mode was collected considering the small size of wave glider. As a result of the backscattering intensity analysis around the towing ship along with wave glider, several scattering points away from the ship were observed, which are not strong but clearly distinguished from the surrounding clutter values. Considering the distance from the center of the ship, it seems to be a signal by the wave glider. On the other hand, it is confirmed that the wave glider can be detected even at the very low false alarm rate ($10^{-6}$) of the target detection using CFAR. Although the scatter signal by the wave glider could be distinguished from the surrounding ocean clutter in the high resolution SAR image, further research is needed to determine if actual wave gliders are detected in various marine environments.

Such new media infonnations through the internet passes infonnations via light on the monitor and provides the various infonnations, with the differentiation from the traditional printing media, it can be searched with electronic commands in limited space. In the process of adapting the new technologies, new media has successfully responded to the fast change and the development of its needs by experiencing the trials and errors, steadily establishing the stable position with its new infonnation transferring and exchanging methods. The representative hompage of websites of information lransfonnations means the first page containing no lower directories and consist of titles, icons, symbols and addresses and can design them in consideration of graphical process, planning, contents and others. Such hompages are very important since the graphical images shows its visual expressions deciding the total meanings of the hompages. In this research, we have analyzed the relationships between its overall colors and text colors from randomly picked hompages of websites in the internets of various areas. • The present study introduces a method to parallelize k-means clustering algorithm for fast unsupervised classification of large satellite imagery. Known as a representative algorithm for unsupervised classification, k-means clustering is usually applied to a preprocessing step before supervised classification, but can show the evident advantages of parallel processing due to its high computational intensity and less human intervention. Parallel processing codes are developed by using multi-threading based on OpenMP. In experiments, a PC of 8 multi-core integrated CPU is involved. A 7 band and 30m resolution image from LANDSAT 8 OLI and a 8 band and 10m resolution image from Sentinel-2A are tested. Parallel processing has shown 6 time faster speed than sequential processing when using 10 classes. To check the consistency of parallel and sequential processing, centers, numbers of classified pixels of classes, classified images are mutually compared, resulting in the same results. The present study is meaningful because it has proved that performance of large satellite processing can be significantly improved by using parallel processing. And it is also revealed that it easy to implement parallel processing by using multi-threading based on OpenMP but it should be carefully designed to control the occurrence of false sharing.

  • The spectral information based image analysis, visual interpretation and automatic classification have been widely carried out so far for remote sensing data processing. Yet recently, many researchers have tried to extract the spatial information which cannot be expressed directly in the image itself. Using the texture and wavelet scheme, we made a wavelet-based texture fusion image which includes the advantages of each scheme. Moreover, using these schemes, we carried out image classification for the urban spatial analysis and the geological structure analysis around the caldera area. These two case studies showed that image classification accuracy of texture image and wavelet-based texture fusion image is better than that of using only raw image. In case of the urban area using high resolution image, as both texture and wavelet based texture fusion image are added to the original image, the classification accuracy is the highest. Because detailed spatial information is applied to the urban area where detail pixel variation is very significant. In case of the geological structure analysis using middle and low resolution image, the images added by only texture image showed the highest classification accuracy. It is interpreted to be necessary to simplify the information such as elevation variation, thermal distribution, on the occasion of analyzing the relatively larger geological structure like a caldera. Therefore, in the image analysis using spatial information, each spatial information analysis method should be carefully selected by considering the characteristics of the satellite images and the purpose of study.

  • Purpose: NEMA NU2-2001 was proposed as a new standard for performance evaluation of whole body PET scanners. in this study, system performance of Siemens CTI ECAT EXACT 47 PET scanner including spatial resolution, sensitivity, scatter fraction, and count rate performance in 2D and 3D mode was evaluated using this new standard method. Methods: ECAT EXACT 47 is a BGO crystal based PET scanner and covers an axial field of view (FOV) of 16.2 cm. Retractable septa allow 2D and 3D data acquisition. All the PET data were acquired according to the NEMA NU2-2001 protocols (coincidence window: 12 ns, energy window: $250{\sim}650$ keV). For the spatial resolution measurement, F-18 point source was placed at the center of the axial FOV((a) x=0, and y=1, (b)x=0, and y=10, (c)x=70, and y=0cm) and a position one fourth of the axial FOV from the center ((a) x=0, and y=1, (b)x=0, and y=10, (c)x=10, and y=0cm). In this case, x and y are transaxial horizontal and vertical, and z is the scanner's axial direction. Images were reconstructed using FBP with ramp filter without any post processing. To measure the system sensitivity, NEMA sensitivity phantom filled with F-18 solution and surrounded by $1{\sim}5$ aluminum sleeves were scanned at the center of transaxial FOV and 10 cm offset from the center. Attenuation free values of sensitivity wire estimated by extrapolating data to the zero wall thickness. NEMA scatter phantom with length of 70 cm was filled with F-18 or C-11solution (2D: 2,900 MBq, 3D: 407 MBq), and coincidence count rates wire measured for 7 half-lives to obtain noise equivalent count rate (MECR) and scatter fraction. We confirmed that dead time loss of the last flame were below 1%. Scatter fraction was estimated by averaging the true to background (staffer+random) ratios of last 3 frames in which the fractions of random rate art negligibly small. Results: Axial and transverse resolutions at 1cm offset from the center were 0.62 and 0.66 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D), and 0.67 and 0.69 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D). Axial, transverse radial, and transverse tangential resolutions at 10cm offset from the center were 0.72 and 0.68 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D), 0.63 and 0.66 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D), and 0.72 and 0.66 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D). Sensitivity values were 708.6 (2D), 2931.3 (3D) counts/sec/MBq at the center and 728.7 (2D, 3398.2 (3D) counts/sec/MBq at 10 cm offset from the center. Scatter fractions were 0.19 (2D) and 0.49 (3D). Peak true count rate and NECR were 64.0 kcps at 40.1 kBq/mL and 49.6 kcps at 40.1 kBq/mL in 2D and 53.7 kcps at 4.76 kBq/mL and 26.4 kcps at 4.47 kBq/mL in 3D. Conclusion: Information about the performance of CTI ECAT EXACT 47 PET scanner reported in this study will be useful for the quantitative analysis of data and determination of optimal image acquisition protocols using this widely used scanner for clinical and research purposes.

  • Recently, a great interest of bio-technology(BT) is concentrated and the image analysis technique for electrophoresis gels is highly requested to analyze genetic information or to look for some new bio-activation materials. For this purpose, the location and quantity of each band in a lane should be measured. In most of existing techniques, the approach of peak searching in a profile of a lane is used. But this peak is improper as the representative of a band, because its location does not correspond to that of the brightest pixel or the center of gravity. Also, it is improper to measure band quantity in most of these approaches because various enhancement processes are commonly applied to original images to extract peaks easily. In this paper, we adopt an approach to measure accumulated brightness as a band quantity in each band region, which Is extracted by not using any process of changing relative brightness, and the gravity center of the region is calculated as a band location. Actually, we first extract lanes with an entropy-based threshold calculated on a gel-image histogram. And then, three other methods are proposed and applied to extract bands. In the MER method, peaks and valleys are searched on a vertical search line by which each lane is bisected. And the minimum enclosing rectangle of each band is set between successive two valleys. On the other hand, in the RG-1 method, each band is extracted by using region growing with a peak as a seed, separating overlapped neighbor bands. In the RG-2 method, peaks and valleys are searched on two vertical lines by which each lane is trisected, and the left and right peaks nay be paired up if they seem to belong to the same band, and then each band region is grown up with a peak or both peaks if exist. To compare above three methods, we have measured the location and amount of bands. As a result, the average errors in band location of MER, RG-1, and RG-2 were 6%, 3%, and 1%, respectively, when the lane length is normalized to a unit value. And the average errors in band amount were 8%, 5%, and 2%, respectively, when the sum of band amount is normalized to a unit value. In conclusion, RG-2 was shown to be more reliable in the accuracy of measuring the location and amount of bands.
