Two dimensional electrostatic model was used to investigate the interactions between beam electron and neutral plasma. It was found that results heavily depend on the beam density. When the beam electron density is lower than the ambient plasma beam density, many beam electrons exhibit vortex structure through beam-plasma interactions and can propagate into the ambient plasma easily from the injection area. On the other hand, when the beam density larget than that of the neutral ambient plasma, it was found that most of the beam electrons constitute return current and ion with much larger mass than that of the electron can be accelerated according to the magnetic field strength. Furthermore, as external field strength varies, it was found that propagation and interaction of the beam can show large dependence on it.
Since it is difficult to extract a high flux ion beam directly at an energy of hyperthermal range ($1{\sim}100\;eV$), especially, lower than 50 eV, the ions should be neutralized into neutral particles and extracted as a neutral beam. A plasma source required to generate and efficiently transport high flux hyperthermal neutral beams should be easily scaled up and produce a high ion density (${\ge}10^{11}\;cm^{-3}$) even at a low working pressure (${\le}$ 0.3 mTorr). It is suggested that the required plasma source can be realized by Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) plasmas with diverse magnetic field configurations of permanent magnets such as a planar ECR plasma source with magnetron field configuration and cylindrical one with axial magnetic fields produced by permanent magnet arrays around chamber wall. In both case of the ECR sources, the electron confinement is based on the simple mirror field structure and efficiently enhanced by electron drifts for producing the high density plasma even at the low pressure.
Lentinus giganteus, one of edible and medicinal mushroom belongs to Pleurotaceae of Agaricales, has been known to contain some inhibitive substances on Sarcoma 180 and curative effect on high blood pressure. Neutral saline soluble (0.9% NaCl), hot water soluble and methanol soluble substances (hereinafter referred to Fr. NaCl, Fr. HW and Fr. MeOH, respectively) were extracted from fruiting body of the mushroom. In vitro cytotoxicity tests, crude polysaccharides were not cytotoxic against cancer cell lines such as Sarcoma 180 and HepG2 at the concentration of $10{\sim}2,000\;{\mu}g/ml$, but crude polysaccharides from Fr. NaCl was toxic to NIH3T3 at the concentration of $10{\sim}2,000\;{\mu}g/ml$. Intraperitoneal injection with crude polysaccharides showed life prolongation effect of $14.3{\sim}67.5%$ in mice previously inoculated with Sarcoma 180, respectively. Fr. NaCl exhibited the immuno-potentiating activity of B lymphocyte by increasing the alkaline phosphatase activity by $1.53{\sim}1.68$ folds compared with control at the concentration of $50{\sim}200\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The numbers of peritoneal exudate cells and circulating leukocytes were increased by 7.7 and 1.6 folds by injecting Fr. NaCl and Fr. MeOH into the mice at the concentration of 50 mg/ml body weight, respectively.

Because microalgae represent high growth rate than terrestrial plants, and it can accumulate significant lipid and carbohydrate content, and other bioactive compounds such as carotenoid and polyphenol in their body, it has been considered as one of the promising resources in bio-energy, and other industries. Although many studies has been performed about the microalgae-derived biochemical accumulation under various abiotic conditions such as different temperatures, salinities and light intensities, the studies about simultaneous effect of those parameters has rarely been performed. Therefore, this study focused on evaluation of simultaneous effect of different salinity (10, 30, 50 psu) and temperatures (20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$) on the changes of biomass, lipid, starch and photosynthetic pigment accumulation. As results, the highest growth rate was achieved at $30^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu in the both algal cultures, and the photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll a and total carotenoid content, were increased in a temperature-dependent manner. The accumulation of lipid and starch contents exhibited different aspects under different combinations of temperature and salinity. From the results, it is suggested that the changes of microalgal lipid and starch accumulation under different salinities may be affected by the different temperatures.

The aims of this study is to improve physical properties of the sewage sludge and the process sludge generated in the leachate treatment by mixing the dry fuel, to develop the neutral solidifing agents that reduce oder, and to recycle the sewage and the process sludges as landfill cover materials. The mixing ratio (W/W) of sludges and dry fuel was appropriate at about 1:1, and the mixed materials were shown to be homogeneous at that ratio. We could know that when the sludges were mixed with dry fuel, moisture contents and viscosities are reduced, and air passages are formed between particles and particles. The various mixing tests and odor tests showed that the neutral solidifing agent was effective for the odor reduction. The main ingredient of the solidifing agent is the ash of sewage sludge, enabling it competitive in waste recycling and production costs. The landfill cover, using developed neutral solidification agent, improved physical properties to satisfy the quality standards and to increase the compressive strength. It also proved to reduce the value of complex oder and the usage of solidification agent to 1/3 (3,000 to 1,000) and to 1/8 (50% to 6%), respectively, from the comparative study with alkaline solidified landfill cover. Further research is under way to prove that this can be mixed with general soil to be used as a soil improvement agent for plant cultivation.

The effect of capsaicin (0.02%) on the concentrations of liver and serum lipids, GOT and GPT activities, and hepatocyte morphology in male Sprague Dawley rats fed diets with or without erotic acid (1.0%) for 28 days was studied. Liver triglyceride concentration was increased by approximately 4.7-fold after erotic acid-feeding, wherease simultaneous feeding of capsaicin and erotic acid reduced its concentration by 38%. Orotic acidfeeding elevated liver cholesterol concentration, but an addition of capsaicin to the erotic acid diet resulted in the significant decrease in liver cholesterol. Capsaicin alone did not affect the liver triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations. Reduction of the serum concentrations of triglyceride and cholesterol by capsaicin was also observed in rats fed diets with erotic acid. The serum GOT and GPT activities were not significantly different among the experimental groups. Liver tissue morphology showed that the hepatocytes of erotic acid-feeding rats were a typical fatty liver with numerous fat droplets, whereas simultaneous feeding of capsaicin with erotic acid reduced the size and numbers of fat droplets. The present study demonstrated that the diet containing 0.02% capsaicin can prevent the erotic acid-induced fatty liver.

The effects of hot water soluble polysaccharides extract(PS) of Lentinus edodes on the lipid components in the liver and plasma of the rats fed the butter yellow were investigated. Twenty four rats were divided into four groups and fed with the diet containing 15% casein, 30% sucrose and 10% soybean oil (basal diet; NO group), supplemented with butter yellow (BO group) or/and PS (NP, BP group). The contents of triglyceride and phospholipid in liver were significantly lower in BP group than BO group but the content of total lipid and total cholesterol were not significant difference between BO and BP. The concentrations of total cholesterol and triglyceride of plasma were significantly lower in BP than BO. AS the results PS of Lentinus edodes prevent the triglyceride and cholesterol rise and then improve the lipid metabolism of rats fed the butter yeollow.
The corrosion of steel reinforcing bar(re-bar) has been the major cause of the reinforced concrete deterioration. FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer) reinforcing bar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. However, FRP re-bar is pone to deteriorate due to other degradation mechanisms than those for steel. The high alkalinity of concrete, for instance, is a possible degradation source. Other potentially FRP re-bar aggressive environments are sea water, acid solution and fresh water/moisture. In this study long-term durability performance of FRP re-bar were evaluated. The mechanical and durability properties of two type of CFRP-, GFRP re-bar and one type of AFRP re-bar were investigated; the FRP re-bars were subjected to alkaline solution acid solution, salt solution and deionized water. The mechanical and durability properties were investigated by performing tensile, compressive and short beam tests. Experimental results confirmed the desirable resistance of FRP re-bar to aggressive chemical environment.
Background: Pulmonary toxicity by bleomycin has multiple mechanisms including direct tissue toxicity due to oxygen-derived free radicals and indirect toxicity through amplification of pulmonary inflammation. To evaluate the effect of chelators or free radical scavenger to lung damage induced by bleomycin, penicillamine as a copper chelator, deferoxamine as an iron chelator and vitamin E as a free radical scavenger were administered. Methods: Two hundred Wistar rats were divided into five groups: Control, bleomycin treated, bleomycin-penicillamine treated, bleomycin-deferoxamine treated, and bleomycin-vitamin E treated groups. Rats sacrificed on day 1, day 3, day 4, day 7, day 14, and day 28 after treatment. Bronchoalveolar lavage, light microscopic and immunohistologic studies for type I, III, IV collagens, fibronectin, laminin and NBD phallicidin were evaluated. Results: There was a significant increase in the total cell counts of bronchoalveolar lavage on day 1 from all treated animals and vitamin treated group showed an abrupt decrease in total cell counts with decrease of neutrophils on day 3. Bleomycin-vitamin E treated group had the least histologic changes such as pulmonary fibrosis. The alveolar basement membranes were positive for type IV collegen and laminin. Basement membranes of bleomycin, bleomycin-penicillamine, or bleomycin-deferoxamine treated groups were disrupted and fragmented on day 4 or 7. The bleomycin-vitamin E treated group had intact basement membranes until day 28. Conclusion: Bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis was related to the severity of acute injury to oxygen radicals or activation of neutrophils and disruption of basement membrane. Vitamin E seemed to be the most effective antioxidant in the inhibition of bleomycin-induced pulmonary injury and fibrosis.
