  • In this study, a similarity rule is thoroughly discussed for tunnelling model tests which can simulate actual ground conditions. Based on this prior consideration, theoretical works are performed to simulate a real ground condition into a gravitational field with a similarity. A process is arranged to determine a lining condition in laboratory tests for a sandy ground tunnel.

  • Tunnel modelling in the field of geotechnical engineering essentially requires models of tunnelling machines and the simulation of tunnelling processes to clarify the detailed behaviour of tunnel construction. Modern advanced mechatronics, including construction processes, machinining and control technologies, are making it possible to fabricate such models. These technologies, however, are essentially developed in a gravity field condition and are needed to examine in a 1g or cenrifuge field condition. This paper presents the simulation method for tunnelling processes and the design method for tunnelling machines with special reference to the problem of earth pressure acting on the lining of a shield tunnel. The paper then introduces and verifies the design method for tunnelling machines in the 1g field by means of checking the reproduceability of experiment data and their comparison with data in the field.

  • Karstic features and mining-related cavities not only lead to severe restrictions in land utilizations, but also constitute serious concern about geohazard and groundwater contamination. A microgravity survey was applied for detecting, mapping and monitoring karstic cavities in the test site at Muan prepared by KIGAM. The gravity data were collected using an AutoGrav CG-3 gravimeter at about 800 stations by 5 m interval along paddy paths. The density distribution beneath the profiles was drawn by two dimensional inversion based on the minimum support stabilizing functional, which generated better focused images of density discontinuities. We also imaged three dimensional density distribution by growing body inversion with solution from Euler deconvolution as a priori information. The density image showed that the cavities were dissolved, enlarged and connected into a cavity network system, which was supported by drill hole logs. A time-lapse microgravity was executed on the road in the test site for monitoring the change of the subsurface density distribution before and after grouting. The data were adjusted for reducing the effects due to the different condition of each survey, and inverted to density distributions. They show the change of density structure during the lapsed time, which implies the effects of grouting. This case history at the Muan test site showed that the microgravity with accuracy and precision of ${\mu}Gal$ is an effective and practical tool for detecting, mapping and monitoring the subsurface cavities.

  • The propagation speed of tribrachial flame in laminar propane jets has been investigated experimentally under normal and micro gravity conditions. The displacement speed was found to vary nonlinearly with axial distance because flow velocity along stoichiometric contour was comparable to the propagation speed of tribrachial flame for the present experiment. Approximate solutions for velocity and concentration accounting density difference and virtual origins have been used in determining the propagation speeds of tribrachial flame. Under micro gravity condition, the results showed that propagation speed of tribrachial flame is largely affected by the mixture fraction gradients, in agreement with previous studies. The limiting maximum value. of propagation speeds under micro gravity conditions are in good agreement with the theoretical prediction, that is, the ratio of maximum propagation speed to the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity is proportional to the square root of the density ratio of unburned to burnt mixture.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to elucidate the resonance of natural convection in a side-heated square enclosure having a mechanically oscillating bottom wall. Under consideration is the impact of the imposed oscillating frequency, amplitude and the system Rayleigh number on the fluctuation of air temperatures. The experimental results show that the magnitude of the fluctuation of air temperature is substantially augmented at a specific forcing frequency of the oscillating bottom wall. The resonant frequency is increased with the increase of the Rayleigh number and it is little affected by the amplitude of the oscillating wall. It is also found that the resonant frequency is relevant to the Brunt- V$\"{a}$iS$\"{a}$l$\"{a}$ frequency which represents the stratification degree of the system.

  • This paper presents techniques used to model a two arm experimental robot. Both arms are compliant and the robot operates in a vertical plane and is therefore influenced by gravity. The robot is being built to study different control strategies for robots containing compliant members. The system is built with extremely flexible members. This limits the required bandwidth of the control electronics, and mimics the flexible motions that are observed for stiffer faster robots. The objective of this paper is to develop a reduced order model of the robot system and to experimentally validate the model. Validation requires that the model includes gravitational effects. Therefore, an assumed modes model is developed which facilitates modeling of gravitational effects. In order to select the order and mode shapes for the model, an analytical solution is derived for a linearized continuous model. This is compared to the assumed modes model to determine the number of mode shapes needed to model the system. The final model, which includes shortening effects, correlates very well with experimental results.

  • For physical experiments like analogue modeling that designed for studying geological deformation, reproducibility of the deformation is important to guarantee the reliability of the experiment. In this study, the normal fault generated by extensional stress is benchmarked using a sand box model. The scaling factors for the modeling test are considered and the experiments are conducted by setting the appropriate material, extensional stress, and boundary condition in the same way as in a benchmark experiment. In addition, a large centrifuge facility is used to vary the centrifugal acceleration and extension rate in the same sized model to account for the scaling factors of the physical quantity during extensional behavior. At 1 g benchmark condition and a centrifugal field at 10 g, a constant rate of the extensional stress is implemented and the topographic evolution is reliably measured. In this study, the reliability and applicability of large centrifuge model tests are evaluated for formulating experiments designed to study geological deformation.

  • Although the measurement of oil globule size distribution is necessary to detect the process of demulsification, the reasonable methodology for its measurement has not been suggested because the solution of soymilk contains insoluble soybean particle and the protein to interfere with the detection of oil globule or oil content. The oil globule size distribution was measured by the homogeneous suspension and cumulative method under gravitational force or centrifugal force, which were modified with Stokes' low. The geometric mean diameter of oil globules in this soymilk was $033{\mu}m\;and\;031{\mu}m$ under gravitational method and centrifugal method, respectively. The differences of oil globule size distribution in the solutions emulsified by different pressures were detected by this method. The mean diameter of the solutions treated at higher pressure was shifted to smaller size and the distribution pattern of the solutions at higher pressure became more compact around the mean diameter.
