Storage Quality of Sulhyang Strawberries as Affected by High O2 Atmosphere Packaging (고산소 환경기체조절 포장조건에 따른 설향 딸기의 저장 중 품질변화)

  • The storage quality of fresh Sulhyang strawberries packaged under modified atmospheres was investigated to examine the effect of high $O_2$ on the fruit. Fresh strawberries were packed into PP trays and top-sealed with PET/PP film. Initial gas compositions inside the packages were varied with air, 40% $O_2$/60% $N_2$, 60% $O_2$/40% $N_2$, and 80% $O_2$/20% $N_2$. Sealed packages in PE film bags with air and perforated PP trays were also used as another treatment and control, respectively. Quality attributes and viable cell counts of pathogenic bacteria were assessed during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 12 days. High $O_2$ concentration showed no significant effects on the physicochemical and microbial qualities of strawberries. Fruit packaged in PE film bags with 6-15% $O_2$ and 7-9% $CO_2$ during storage had the lowest viable cell counts of inherent microorganisms among the treatment samples. Growth of pathogenic bacteria was suppressed in perforated packages where molds occurred frequently. In an overall sensory aspect, the PE film packages exhibited higher scores than the others at the end of storage period. The experimental results suggested that gas-permeable film packaging with an appropriate combination of $O_2$ and $CO_2$ rather than gas-barrier tray packaging with an initially high $O_2$ concentration would be suitable for improving the storability of strawberries.

  • For investigation of the optimum gas composition for CA storage of Shingo pear, the pears were kept at 8 different $O_2/CO_2$ concentrations for 5 months and checked in some indices related in storability and sensory quality after storage and transfer to air at $20^{\circ}C$ for 1 week. The pears kept in all the CA storage conditions in this experiment, especially in $3%\;O_2-3%,\;CO_2$, were lower in weight loss than the pears kept in cold room. Immediately after storage decay rates of the pears stored at CA storage conditions except $3%\;O_2-3%,\;CO_2$ and $3%\;O_2-4%,\;CO_2$ were more serious than that of the pears stored at cold room, and the rates of the pears, especially stored at cold room, were rapidly increased by exposure to $20^{\circ}C$ after storage. The highest soluble solid content and firmess were shown in the pears stored at the CA storage condition of $3%\;O_2-3%,\;CO_2$, and the pears stored at the conditions of $3%\;O_2$ and $4%{\sim}5%\;CO_2$ had the highest acidity. In sensory evaluation the pears kept at the conditions of $3%O_2-3%$, 4% and 5% $CO_2$ maintained a good quality after storage and after storage and transfer to air at $20^{\circ}C$ for 1 week.

Mechanical and Germination Characteristics of Stabilized Dredged Soil (고화준설토의 역학적 특성과 식생 발아 특성)

  • In this paper, mechanical and germination characteristics of stabilized dredged soils were investigated to recycle dredged soil in eco-friendly manner such as waterfront construction. Non sintering binder (NSB), which was developed by using interchemical reactions between slag, high-calcium fly ash, alkali activator on the dredged marine clay, was added to dredged soil. Ordinary portland cement was also used for the comparison of two binders. Experimental tests such as flow test and unconfined compressive test were carried out to evaluate characteristics of stabilized dredged soil. Leaching test, pH measure, vegetation germination test were also conducted to consider environmental applicability. The unconfined compressive tests shows that unconfined compressive strength (UCS) also increases with the increase of curing time and mixed ratio. UCS of NSB mixtures were higher than those of OPC mixtures. Germination tests showed that germination and sprouting date are better in NSB mixture than OPC mixture. It can be explained that germination decreased as pH and 7-day strength increased.

The Chilling Injury Development and Quality Characteristics of 'Ooishiwase' Plums (Prunus salicina L.) according to Ripening Stages and Cold Storage Temperature (자두 '대석조생'의 숙기 및 저온저장 온도에 따른 저온장해과 발생 및 품질특성)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the quality characteristics of and chilling injury development in 'Ooishiwase' plum fruits after harvest, according to the ripening stage and storage temperature. The fruits were harvested at three ripening stages (60, 80, and >90% skin color) and were then stored at 1, 4, 5, 6, and $20^{\circ}C$ cold-storage rooms for up to 48 days. The fruit quality parameters, respiration patterns, and chilling injury development were monitored during the storage periods and the three days of subsequent ripening at $20^{\circ}C$. The fruits harvested at the 60%-skin-color stage maintained the flesh firmness, color, weight loss, and TA, and their respiration rates and ethylene production were decreased compared with the 80%-or >90%-skin-color fruits, at a lower storage temperature. The major symptoms of chilling injuries in the Ooishiwase plums were gel breakdown, flesh browning, and flesh translucency. These symptoms appeared at all the low-storage-temperature and ripening treatment stages. When the fruits, however, were harvested at a more immature stage and were stored at a lower storage temperature, the chilling injury development decreased. These results show that the development of chilling injury in Ooishiwase plums is related to the climacteric behavior during cold storage.

  • The normal cement concrete is widely used material to build the construction recently, but it has a fault to increase the dead load on account of its unit weight is large compared with strength. Therefore, many engineers are continuously searching for new materials of construction to provide greater performance at lower density. The main purpose of the work described in this paper were to establish the physical and mechanical properties of synthetic lightweight aggregate concrete using perlite on fine aggregate and expanded clay, pumice stone on coarse aggregate. The test results of this study are summarized that the water-cement ratio was shown 47% using expanded clay, 56% using pumice stone on coarse aggregate, unit weight was shown $l,622kgf/m^3$ using expanded clay, $l,596kgf/m^3$ using pumice stone on coarse aggregate, and the absorption ratio was shown same as 17%. The compressive strength was shown more than $228kgf/cm^2$, tensile and bending strength was more than $27kgf/cm^2$, $58kgf/cm^2$ at all types, and rebound number with schmidt hammer was increased with increase of compressive strength. The static modulus was $1.12{\times}10^5kgf/cm^2$ using expanded clay, $1.09{\times}10^5kgf/cm^2$ using pumice stone on coarse aggregate, and stress-strain curves were shown that increased with increase of stress, and the strain on the maximum stress was shown identical with $2.0{\times}10^{-3}$, approximately.

Dimensional Changes of Ceromer Crown by Water Absorption (치과용 심미수복재료 세로모에서 수분흡수와 체적 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Statement of problem: The increasing demand for esthetic restorations has been required developing new materials for tooth colored restoration. Ceromer(Ceramic Optimized Polymer) has some advantages over porcelain, and has gained increasing popularity in restorative dentistry. However, there is little information on the dimensional changes in a clinical restoration in moist conditions. Purpose: This study examined the dimensional changes in Ceromer restorations with a clinical crown shape that were fabricated in a clinical manner. Material and methods: The crowns for the maxillary central incisor were fabricated with two Ceromers($BelleGlass^{(R)}$ and $Targis^{(R)}$) using a similar clinical restoration manufacturing technique. A total of twenty specimens were prepared and immersed in distilled water at room temperature to allow for water absorption. The weight, height and width were measured at 24, 72 and 168 hours. The accumulated ratios of the changes were calculated and evaluated using a paired t-test and an independent independent t-test. Results: The dimensions and weight increased with increasing soaking time. $Targis^{(R)}$ showed significant differences in height and weight between 24 hours and the other times(P<.05). $BelleGlass^{(R)}$ showed significant differences in width and weight between 24 hours and the other times. The two materials showed different changing patterns of the dimensions but there were no statistically significant differences between them. Conclusion: The dimensions and weight of the Ceromer restorations were changed by water absorption. The clinical crown shaped specimen showed more complicated dimensional changes than the simplified specimens.

Effects of Heat Pretreatment on the Quality under Storage of Fresh Ginger Rhizomes (저장 전 열처리가 생강의 이화학적 및 관능적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Fresh ginger rhizomes were heat-treated for 10 min, 30 min, or 60 min using hot air ($40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, or $60^{\circ}C$), and stored in low-density polyethylene (0.04 mm thickness) bags for 2 months at $12{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. We studied the effects of heat pretreatment on changes in gas levels after packaging, and quality characteristics of the rhizomes. Oxygen and carbon dioxide levels progressively fell and rose, respectively, as the temperature of heat treatment rose and the duration of such treatment was extended. The sprouting rate of ginger rhizomes treated at $40^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of other samples. Rotting, softening, and increasing pH of rhizomes were accelerated by treatment at higher temperature for a longer time. Weight loss and soluble solid levels were not affected by heat treatment. Sensory qualities such as appearance, odor, and overall acceptability of rhizomes fell with treatment at a higher temperature for a longer time. These results suggest that heat pretreatment has a detrimental effect on the quality of fresh ginger rhizomes.

Effects of fallen blossoms of Prunus spp. on nutrient dynamics in an artificial pond ecosystem (벚나무류 낙화가 인공 연못생태계의 물질순환에 미치는 영향)

  • To identify the effect of fallen cherry blossom on the artificial pond ecosystem, microcosm experiment was conducted into the aquatic decomposition of Prunus species petals. Petals were put in $1mm^2$ mesh nylon litter bags. For treatment group, one flower litter bag was placed into each pot microcosm ($27{\times}20{\times}8cm^3$) filled with influent water from the artificial pond, whereas control group microcosm contained pond water only. Decomposition time were set differently (4, 8, 12, 16 days) among treatment groups. At the end of experiment, most petals were decomposed and only 32.3% of initial dry weight remained with the decay rate (k) of $7.06{\times}10^{-2}day^{-1}$. $NO_3-N$ concentration of microcosm water decreased sharply from 1.90 mg/L at first to 0.02 mg/L, whereas $NH_4-N$ concentration increased from 0.03 mg/L to 2.85 mg/L continually. $PO_4-P$ concentration was 0.03 mg/L at first and increased to 2.39 mg/L by decomposition. Therefore, available phosphorus seems to have leached with higher rate than nitrogen from the petals litter. Increase about 0.02 mg/L in $PO_4-P$ concentration could be estimated in artificial pond from the calculation on the total quantity of fallen blossoms. This result suggests that available phosphorus from the decomposed Prunus petals could cause eutrophication in the artificial pond.

Effect of Ozone Water on Pesticide-Residual Contents of Soybean Sprouts during Cultivation (콩나물 재배중 잔류농약 함량에 미치는 오존수 처리 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ozone treatment on the growth and pesticide-residual contents of soybean sprouts during cultivation. Total weight and length of the soybean sprouts treated by 0.3 ppm ozone water for 30min during soaking of soybean increased 27% and 19% higher than those of control group, respectively. But 27% of root weight decreased. No major differences in growth state were observed between the treatments during soaking and watering with ozone water, and watering with ozone water. Pesticide residues in soybeans treated with carbendazim, captain, diazinon, fenthim, dichlorvos and chlorpyrifos ranged from 4.75 to 8.35 ppm. The pesticides in soybean sprouts by the treatment of soaking and watering with water for 5 days, those by 0.3 ppm ozone-water watering, and those by soaking and watering with 0.3 ppm ozone water were destroyed to $85{\sim}99$, $89{\sim}100$ and $94{\sim}100%$, respectively. The order of degradation ratio in the pesticides was captan>dichlorvos>fenthion>carbendazin>diazinon>chlorpyrifos.

The Fundamental Properties of Foamed Concrete as the Eco-friendly Ground Repair System for Cast in Site Using the CSA (CSA를 사용한 친환경 지반보수용 현장 기포콘크리트의 기초 특성 검토)

  • This study aimed to develop a foam concrete material for a ground repair system that has low strength and low fluidity by using an eco-friendly binder, which substitutes industrial by-products for more than 90% of cement. Basic properties were evaluated after substituting a small amount of calcium sulfo aluminate (CSA) for the binder to improve the sinking depth rate and volume change, commonly found when it had a large amount of industrial by-products. The substitution rates of CSA for the eco-friendly binder used for the foam concrete were 2.5, 5, and 10%. Fresh properties, hardened properties, pore structure, and hydrates were analyzed. Experimental results showed that using only 2.5% of CSA could improve the deep sinking depth which occurred when using an eco-friendly binder. As a result, the weight difference between the upper, middle, and lower parts of cast specimens was improved even after being hardened. The addition of CSA also contributed to the formation of small, uniformly sized closed pores and improved initial strength. However, when the proportion of CSA increased, the long-term strength decreased. However, it satisfied the target strength when 5% or less of CSA was used. The results of this study revealed that it was possible to manufacture foam concrete with low strength and high fluidity for repairing ground satisfying target qualities by adding 2.5% of CSA to the eco-friendly binder containing a large amount of industrial by-products.
