Weatherproof-properties Evaluation of Castor Oil-impregnated Wood Using a Vacuum-pressure Method (감가압법으로 주입한 피마자유-처리 목재의 내후성 평가)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of castor oil (CSO) as a natural wood preservative. CSO was treated into wood blocks prepared with domestic and imported wood species using a vacuum-pressure method, and then treatability, leachability and decay resistance of the CSO-treated wood blocks were examined. Although CSO was penetrated effectively into wood blocks of all wood species, the CSO-treatability was the highest in Western hemlock, followed by Japanese larch (LA), soft maple and Mongolian oak due to the difference of its anatomical structure. Except for LA, the more retained, the more leached during a saline water-immersing process for 48h. The use of ethanol added to reduce the viscosity of CSO affected negatively the treatability and leachability of wood blocks. Decay resistance, which was evaluated by the weight loss of wood blocks exposed against Fomitopsis palustris (FOP) and Trametes versicolor, of the CSO-treated/leached wood blocks was superior to that of control. Especially, most of wood blocks treated with preserving solution composed of only CSO (CSO-2) did not decayed and showed a very low weight loss against FOP. The decay resistance results from CSO retained in wood blocks after leaching. The retention of CSO could identify using the observation of X-ray microscope. Length of wood strips, which were treated with CSO-2 and then immersed in saline water for 2 weeks, hardly changed in all cutting directions. In addition, weight gain and length-swelling rate of the wood strips were extremely low compared to those of control. These results indicate that moisture resistance of the wood strips was improved by the CSO treatment. It is concluded that the treatment of CSO using a vacuum-pressure method provides the decay resistance and dimensional stability of wood, and thus CSO can be used as a natural wood preservative on various indoor and outdoor circumstances.

  • The pressurization system in a liquid rocket propulsion system provides a controlled gas pressure in the ullage space of the vehicle propellant tanks. It is advantage to employ a hot gas heat exchanger in the pressurization system to increase the specific volume of the pressurant and thereby reduce over-all system weight. Therefore a significant improvement in pressurization system performance can be achieved, particularly in a cryogenic system. For this study air and $CN_2$ are employed as external fluid and pressurant respectively Numerical analysis on the pressurant discharging characteristics have been compared with the experimental results performed at the PTF(Propellant-feeding Test Facility). It is shown that the discrepancy of analytic and experimental results is within about ${\pm}15%$. It is estimated that the temperature drop rate of cryogenic pressurant immersed liquid oxygen can be predicted using this analytic approach method.

  • Currently, the shotcrete used as basic support in the tunnel excavation, has the advantages of maintaining high-level strength in condition of early shooting with thin thickness based on the excavation characteristics of rock mass. Therefore supreme equipment and materials were developed and the great strides have continued. Also, the development of measurement technology and the rocks behaviors of undergound are evaluated in detail and the designs of strength and thickness are made. The reinforcement materials development of new material is carried on. Most of the coal fly ash produced in Korea fire power plant is fly ash and bottom mash. Fly ash has been producing to be applied in many fields such as cement, aggregate, construction, civil, agriculture and fisheries. Also a lot of experiments are actively on the way. Therefore in this experiment, in order to use the fly ash mixed with concrete as a material of shotcrete, the experiment was performed in the best content to reduce the compression strength and the shooting rebound ratio of the excavated surface to use fly ash as a substitute material of concrete. As a result, when 15%.wt substitution was made to the fly ash, about 10% of compression strength and 6% of rebound ratio was reduced.

Effect of Storage Conditions on the Quality of ′Fuyu′ Persimmon Fruits and Cucumbers (단감 및 오이의 저장조건이 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Optimal storage conditions were investigated for 'Fuyu' persimmon fruits and cucumbers were stored under conditions of 70% relative humidity(RH) at 25$^{\circ}C$, 80% RH at l0$^{\circ}C$ and 90% at 5$^{\circ}C$ or l0$^{\circ}C$ of relative humidity, respectively and their qualities in microbial counts, decay ratio, surface color difference and chemical attributes were monitored during the storage period. 'Fuyu'persimmon fruits and cucumbers stored under 90% of relative humidity showed the minimal change in weight loss, decrease of ascorbic acid content, surface color difference and decay by putrefactive microorganisms. As the results of this experiment, 'Fuyu' persimmon fruits and cucumberf stored under 9% of relative humidity were best fer maintaining their freshness.

Effect of Storage Temperature and Humidity on the Quality of Apples and Pears harvested in Gyeongnam, Korea (경남산 사과 및 배의 저장온습도별 품질변화)

  • Apples and pears for investigating the optimal storage conditions were purchased from the farmhouse located in Hadong-Goon and Geochang-Goon Gyeongnam just before the beginning of this experiment. Apples and pears were, stored under 70%(storage temperature : 25$^{\circ}C$), 80%(10$^{\circ}C$) and 90%(5$^{\circ}C$) of relative humidity, respectively and their qualities in microbial counts, decay ratio, surface color difference and chemical attributes were monitored during the storage period. Apples and pears stored under 70% of relative humidity showed the minimal change in weight lass, decrease ratio of ascorbic acid content, surface color difference and degrees contaminated by putrefactive microorganisms. As the results of this experiment, apples and pears stored under 90% of relative humidity showed the optimal storage conditions for maintaining their freshness.

Fundamental Characteristics of Activated Fly Ash-Slag Cement Exposed to 5℃ Seawater (5℃ 해수에 노출된 알칼리 활성 플라이애시-슬래그 시멘트의 기초 특성)

  • This paper shows an experimental study for fundamental characteristics of alkali activated fly ash-slag cement paste exposed to seawater of 5℃. Fly ash and slag were blended in three different ratios; 6:4, 7:3, and 8:2. Activators (NaOH and Na2SiO3) used 5% of the binder weight. It was shown that as the fly ash substitution rate in creased, compressive strength and density decreased, and water absorption rate increased. The results of X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry showed that hydration reactants formed in samples did not differ significantly, however, C-S-H gel increased as the slag substitution rate increased. It showed that mechanical properties of fly ash-slag cement pastes under 5℃ seawater condition were affected by the slag substitution rate rather than fly ash.

  • Passive autocatalytic recombiner (PAR) is considered as an explosive gas control system in operating NPP plants. This work investigates and evaluates hydrogen recombination performance over manufactured $Pt/TiO_2$ catalysts. When the space velocity increases, the hydrogen conversion decreased, while hydrogen depletion rate (g/sec) increases highly in $35000{\sim}100000hr^{-1}$ Gas Hourly Space Velocity (GHSV). Hydrogen conversion and depletion rate with Pt loading is investigated. As a result, there were no differences in the hydrogen conversion, but exothermic heating rate (K/sec) is increases as Pt loading increases. The catalyst showes a high hydrogen conversion efficiency of 80% under atmospheric conditions.

코로나 방전을 이용한 하이브리드 사이클론 집진 장치 특성 연구

  • 산업화가 발달됨에 따라 대기 오염 물질은 점차 증가하고 있는 추세에 있고 특히 기름 및 석탄 연소 보일러, 자동차, 제철, 시멘트 플렌트, 소각로 등은 미세 분진을 발생시키는 주원인이 되어 왔다. 최근 대기환경법은 오염 분진의 중량 규제로부터 $10{\mu}m$ 미만의 PM10에서 $2.5{\mu}m$ 미만의 PM2.5의 미세 분진에 대한 규제로 점차 심화되고 있으나, 이러한 미세분진은 고전적인 제거 방법으로는 매우 어려우며 고가의 HEPA 필터를 사용하여야 한다. 한편 코로나 방전을 이용하는 전기 집진은 미세 먼지 제거에 매우 효율적이어서 $1{\mu}m$ 미만의 미세 분지도 99%까지 제거가 가능하다는 장점이 있지만 입자크기가 클 경우에는 효율이 떨어지는 단점이 있다. 한편 사이클론 집진기는 매우 오래전부터 개발되어 사용되어 왔는데 가격이 저렴하고 운영비가 적게 들며 $10{\mu}m$ 이상의 먼지는 99% 이상 제거가 가능하여 산업현장에서 오랜 기간 사용되어 왔지만 입자크기가 $10{\mu}m$ 미만으로 가면 집진율이 급격히 떨어지는 단점을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 사이클론 집진기의 구조를 기본으로하여 사이클론 집진기 내부에 플라즈마 방전을 설치하여 원심력에 의한 집진과 코로나 방전에 의한 전기 집진을 동시에 수행할 수 있도록 하이브리드 사이클론 집진기를 제작하였다. 제작된 사이클론 집진기는 직경 30 cm 높이 120 cm의 사이클론 구조를 가지고 있으며 1 hp의 터보송풍기를 장착하여 $20m^3$/min 이상의 유량을 처리할 수 있도록 설계 제작되었다. 제작된 하이브리드 사이클론 집진기의 성능을 평가하기 위하여 $10m^3$의 체적을 가지는 테스트 챔버 내부에 사이클론 집진기를 설치하고 향을 태워 미세 먼지를 발생시킨 후 다양한 조건에서 집진 성능을 측정하여 보았다. 미세 먼지의 경우 사이클론을 작동시키지 않아도 테스트 챔버 벽면에 흡착되어 초기에는 급격히 감소하는 경향을 보여주나 일정 시간이 경과한 후에는 매우 느리게 감소하는 현상이 관찰 되었다. 코로나 방전을 하지 않고 오존 파괴기에 활성탄만 충진한 상태에서 사이크론을 작동시킬 경우 지속적으로 천천히 감소하는 경향을 보여주었으며, 코로나 플라즈마를 방전시킨 경우 미세 먼지는 HEPA filter를 장착한 것보다도 조금 빠르게 미세먼지를 제거하였다. 챔버 내부의 미세먼지가 초기 값의 1/10에 도달하는 시간은 코로나 방전 전류가 증가할수록 짧아지는 경향을 보여주었으며 최적 조건에서 100초 이내에 90% 이상 제거가 가능하였다. 하이브리드 사이클론 집진기는 집진 뿐 만 아리라 VOC 성분도 분해가 가능하여 유해물질을 제거하는 능력이 있다. 유해 가스 제거 능력을 실험하기 위하여 분진제거 실험에 사용된 챔버 안에 아세톤을 증발시켜 50 ppm이 되도록 한 후 다양한 조건에서 유해물질 제거 실험을 수행하였다. 미세먼지와는 달리 장비를 작동하지 않을 경우 매우 느리게 아세톤 농도가 감소하였다. 이는 미세 먼지와는 달리 흡착이 발생하지 않고, 측정 챔버 자체가 완전한 밀폐가 이루어지지 않아 자연적으로 조금씩 외부로 누출되기 때문으로 판단된다. 코로나 플라즈마만 방전시켰을 경우 초기 농도의 80%가 제거되는데 걸리는 시간은 약 28분 정도로 코로나 플라즈마가 VOC 제거에 효과가 있음은 확인하였으나 제거율이 그리 높지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 한편 오존 파괴를 위해 활성탄으로 충진 된 오존파괴기를 통과시킨 경우는 약 12분 경과 후 80%가 제거됨을 확인할 수 있었으나 그 이후에는 VOC의 감소가 매우 느리게 진행됨을 알 수 있었다. 한편 활성탄 대신 $MnO_2$ 복합촉매로 충진 된 오존파괴기를 통과한 경우 약 3분 정도 경과 후 80%의 아세톤이 제거됨을 관찰할 수 있었으며 코로나 플라즈마를 작동시키면서 $MnO_2$ 복합촉매로 충진 된 오존파괴기를 통과시킨 경우 약 2분 정도 경과 80% 이상의 아세톤이 제거되어 코로나 플라즈마와 복합촉매를 사용할 경우 VOC 성분이 효과적으로 제거됨을 알 수 있었다.

Quality changes of 'Fuyu' persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) packaged with functional film and stored at different temperature (기능성 필름 포장 및 저장온도에 따른 '부유' 단감의 품질 변화)

  • The effect of storage temperatures ($0^{\circ}C$and $20^{\circ}C$) and packing functional film for fruit quality were examined in 'Fuyu' persimmon. The fresh weight loss was delay more effectively by the inhibition of transpiration when functional film was used. The firmness was effectively maintained in functional film packages at low temperature ($0^{\circ}C$), which might result from the beneficial combination of $CO_2$ and $O_2$. The soluble solid contents was higher with packing of functional film at $0^{\circ}C$ than at room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$). Highest $CO_2$ production in functional film bags was observed in room temperature storage after one week and thereafter declined sharply whereas lowest in 8 weeks. $CO_2$ concentration regardless of packing slowly increased to $5.2{\mu}L{\sim}10.2mL{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ until 8 weeks of low temperature due to persimmon respiration. Hunter 'b' value changed greatly yellowness according to temperature of storage but there were no significant differences among packaging treatments. Effects of functional film and low temperature in slower softening were consistent. This results suggested that the packing functional film at low temperature resulted in the best retention of quality market.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging of Minimally Processed Cut Garlic (최소가공된 절단 마늘의 환경기체조절포장)

  • There is a need in food industry to store minimally processed garlic for long time to have it be used just at the time of demand for final product processing. Optimal modified atmosphere packaging is expected to slow down the quality change extending its storage life. In order to find optimal packaging conditions, plastic films of different gas permeability properties (low density polyethylene (LDPE) $30{\mu}m$, polyolefin $50{\mu}m$ (PD 900), polyolefin $20{\mu}m$ (PD 941)) were used for packaging 400 g of minimally processed garlic. Perforated LDPE packages were prepared as control. The packaged products were stored at $1{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 52 days. Package treatments were compared in weight loss, decay, surface color, hardness and soluble solid content. While control package had normal atmosphere of air, LDPE, PD 900 and PD 941 packages attained internal concentration of $O_2$ 4.6% / $CO_2$ 12%, $O_2$ 0.9% / $CO_2$ 21% and $O_2$ 0.5% / $CO_2$ 13% after 45 days, respectively. Control packaging had rapid weight loss with high mold decay and great surface color change in 45 days. In PD 900 film packages of lowest gas permeability, the fresh-cut garlic could be stored without mold decay for 52 days. Except control packaging, there were no significant differences in surface color, hardness and soluble solid content among package treatments.
